thats the artists problem .i agree that not many actually experiment and think outside the box but saying genres are stupid is kinda retarded to me . wow someone labeled a style this name ... who gives a fuck . if there wasnt any genres then no one would know what the fuck your on about when you explain a songs style or vibe. its like saying this : lets just take off all the numbers to all the rooms in a hotel .... does that make any sense ?

Yeah I'd love to make a bunch of songs that change tempo all the time and don't have any DJ friendly intro and outros and still be able to make 2 cents on it. That's probably the reason why I don't make much money on music because I don't make EASY music for DJs.

I just don't see the point in micromanaging music... and the whole 'genre' thing has worked against creativity in the electronic scene. It's made things hard to follow for people who are just getting started with the music, and it's led to an over-abundance of copycat tracks.

If you're gonna have genres, have broad ones.... with very obvious differences... but when you can actually have threads devoted to the difference between two 'so-called' genres - where the vast majority of people can't really discern any difference, or... don't give a flying fuck... then it's simply stupid. Why not call it all 'trance'?

every genre in music has experimented/underground (some are producers like some on this board) & then more commercial music. the commercial ( sound thats selling ) makes more doh and labels are too scared to risk money on experimented side of the genres. its all about sales.

there is a point in genres , electronic music has too many styles to keep it under one name & those styles have sub-genres too.

i thought you the smartest person on this board aside from myself up until i read this...

then i looked at your profile and discovered you play trance and got really scared.

so ya...

scottys right about the tempo's.

dnb on 33rpm = new school breaks straight up yo,

and funky breaks and electro are what hip hop was founded on.

in my opinion (though some may beg to differ)as dj craze once put it all of these genres and every thing in between are all one big happy family of "underground street music".

which brings me to fishfaces point about genres....

personaly i think its a good point expressed in a bad way.

speaking as someone who was raised in a fairly musical upbringing i have learned to appriciate all forms of music (exept trance suckas!!) to some extent and as a dj with a wide musical interest i've always tried to use my dj sets to express this appriciation to the best of my ability.

when i was in graphic design school i had this great teacher who told me that "it's ok to BREAK the rules as long as you KNOW what those rules are"

you need genre classifications in order to cross them not to mention makes diggin' through the record bins a little easier.

if it was all one genre you wouldn't be innovating anymore now would you?

and isn't that the point your getting at? INNOVATION?

personally i agree with the fact classifications limit you...

and when i go out to a night thats strictly anything i usually wanna fall asleep in the corner.

and i find that the dj's who play only this or only that are usually the ones who suck because they lack in versatility.

take hip hop for example...

most hip hop dj's can barely beat match for more that 4 bars and can't eq worth a damn.

most trance dj's can eq very well and beatmatch, but give em 2 of the same record and ask em to juggle or scratch and they will look at you like you got 2 heads.

anyway... what i find really funny about this thread is the fact that by shutting out genre classification you are putting yourself into one.

"MASH UP" music is fuckin' HUGE in the u.k. and has been for a few years now.

if you haven't realised this by now you have either been sleeping for at least half a decade or just to busy listening to gay fuckin' trance.

anyway...

i personaly don't give a shit... hip hop, punk rawk, dnb, britpop, early 90's dance music, mainstream classics, nu skool, old skool...

FUCK SKOOL!!

imma mash em all down with my own flavour and call it breaks no matter how fuckin' weird you think i am!!

RESPEK!!

someone didnt read me post too well .ITS THE LABEL THAT MAKES SHIT LIMITED . a lot of artist experiment ( even myself ) but its next to impossible to get signed because labels are comfy with "whats hot". we are all in a big family but we all need names to tell em apart , duhh.

its acctually the consumer that makes it limited dumb ass...

its called "supply and demand"

if you are not "whats hot" you are unfortunately by process of elimination...

"whats not".

the customer has EVERYTHING to do with it.

why the fuck would a record label sign an experimental artist if he doesn't cater to thier target market?

and more importantly why would ppl buy it if they did?

cuz its well produced?

thats BULLSHIT!!

for all you know puff daddy could love making gay fuckin' trance music in his free time.

but if that shit got dropped on death row it would collect more dust than paula abdul's nasal cavity!!

its not rocket science or any kind or conspiracy dude...

just high school economics!!

and this is why there isnt much experimented stuff because labels are too scared to sign it and lose coin . customers would buy it because its DIFFERENT from everything else artist write yet still blends with the genre (depending how much the artist takes that into consideration). but back on point : labels are the ones checking out what customers like but in the end , the labels have final say . this is changing now that vinyl is going down and mp3s are getting bigger for sales and now labels can have more flexablity on experimented material.

btw get off the trance thing , its getting old *yawn*. i hate house , you hear me crying ?

actually... there are a whole load of labels that put out experimental tracks. Touch, Ash International, Tone, Dirter, Beta-Lectam, Staalplaat, Rephlex, Susan Lawly, Sub Rosa, Locust... Just about everybody involved in indie labels is in it because they're music fans who believe the stuff should be heard. Finding stores that will take a chance on it is another thing entirely...

As for the "what's hot" comment... nine times out of ten "what's hot" is simply a rehash of stuff that was hot years ago... I mean, shit, in the last few years 'innovation' has in electronic music has mostly meant building emulators to sound like vintage 80s synths... or adding yelping vocals (which has been done and done and done before). It's a good thing for producers that a lot of people in the 'scene' haven't been around long enough to have a grasp on the musical lineage of what they're hearing, or can't remember what happened last week, let alone two years ago.

the "whats hot" comment isnt something im into but it is what labels look for when signing a tune ...at least in this underground electronic scene. in general tho , there aint much experimented stuff . i wish there was tho . i dunno the labels you mentioned or the style but thats pretty rare but cool. i myself write experimented freeform and its quite hard getting labels interested in it cus its not the normal style thats being pressed now :S

I learned my lesson, I was close to hooking up with a good house label but they wanted me to change the material too much, I refused, and the label ended up going out of business eventually anyway... Oh well
