"you cant make money as a musician,
im on a label and still have to work like a fuckin monkey." lol you are on a label and you expect to make money, lol that's hilarious. look, just because you made a poor choice doesn't mean other musicians can't make money. |

I'm probably in the same position as you smile, but I think I'm honestly gonna do what Scotty P said.
I'm really trying hard to learn how to do all kinds of things, not just produce the same type of music over. Learning musical theory, playing in bands, learning how to produce different styles of music, lerning how to mix, produce for other people, master other people's stuff, compose for movies/video games. Like right now I'm taking music theory in school, and I'm switching into communicatons where I'm gonna try to learn alot about film and all that shit. The way I see it the more i know, the more potentially useful I can be for someone, the better my chances are at landing a job in the field.

I left medicine for arts. Very hard choice to make because I was bascially set up for life, and jumped into the least secure field imagineable Now I have a day job (teaching) which frees me up to do what I like the most (film making). I've made it to a point where I'm sponsored to make film and have my first film in development, but I'm still not free to quit...yet. I've been burning the midnight oil and juggling 2 careers and maybe it'll pay off, but that's really not why I'm doing it. Maybe I'll just get exhausted some day....
RepentTokyo: Are you saying that the Hardsteppers is a bad choice? You clearly must have things totally worked out, if I'm reading you right. |

I'm saying that people who say they can't make money in music, and then use the fact that they have a record deal to justify that answer, are hilarious. A record deal = a loan with fucked up terms, and if you see it as some kind of magical key to riches or financial independence, well, I guess you need to read more Steve Albini. |

You're saying something totally true here, but you initially lost me cuz you sounded arrogant. Owning a lable is owning a money lending business in the 2Ks. That's why hip hop gangsters open more lables than whorehouses these days. |

I completely agree that musicians are much better served through self release and promotion than they are by enslaving themselves to someone else's money making agenda... |

I dunno, a record label deal is at least a contract, and a contract is a helluva lot more than say, NOT having a contract. holy freaking DUH!
therefor, having a recording deal WOULD make you more apt to saying whether or not the music industry makes money.
I'm feeling sober right now.. |
Good [+1]Toggle ReplyLink» mtl_mtl a répondu le Wed 17 Jan, 2007 @ 5:26pm |
a contract is useless unless you can afford to pay lawyers to enforce it. and even then, good luck getting blood from a stone.
a contract is a lot worse than not having a contract. Just ask any of the hundreds of artists languishing in obscurity every year because their label won't promote or release their records, and who are prevented from moving on to a new beginning because they are under contract. having a record deal doesn't really speak to your knowledge of the industry except that at one point in time you made a poor financial decision. Mise À Jour » mtl_mtl a écrit sur Wed 17 Jan, 2007 @ 5:27pm does the person in this thread who alluded to their record deal seem happy with his situation, given his posts in this thread? |

I produced a demo for somebody who had a "binding" contract or some crap with some record label, meaning he had to do buisness with that specific record label.
He gave up raping and snorts coke all day now, self promotion is the way to go in the 21st century. Or atleast part of the way.
