guy FAWKES was an english soldier who was put in charge of a conspiracy to assassinate king james the 1st and the parliament members at the time by blowing up westminster palace, in 1605. he attempted to do this by filling a cellar which ran beneath wetminster palace with gunpowder. he didnt succeed. him and the other conspirators were caught, tortured and hung for their trouble.
funny thing is, fawkes was basically just a lackey. he was put in charge because of the fact that he had military experience and was familiar with explosives...the real mastermind behind the plot was robert catesby.
so now november 5th (the day the plot was busted) is an annual celebration of what they call the gunpowder treason. in britain they let off fireworks and burn straw effigies of guy fawkes, and sometimes of other unpopular public figures....
