People are intrigued and disgusted by fetish and paraphilic behavior. There are numerous and varied reasons why people become aroused making the sexual choices that they do. It is important to understand what is arousing to you while maintaining a sense of self and keeping sexual behaviors in balance with other life concerns.

PURPOSE: This activity supports your getting in touch with your sexual self by thinking about various sexual behaviors and situations both typical and atypical.

DIRECTIONS: Refer to the sexual fetish and paraphilia list under the Terms section at the beginning of this chapter. Rank them according to your value system on the continuum below. Add to the list your own ideas of what is sexually appealing or not appealing. For example, you might find showering with a partner or sucking on your partner’s toes erotic. Be creative! After you have finished the continuum, analyze what you have listed. This activity is not suggesting you engage in these sexual behaviors, simply consider them.

2. So What Is Sex Addiction?
The concept of someone becoming or being addicted to sex usually is joke fodder and gets big laughs. Afterall, who wouldn’t want to be addicted to sex? The reality of sex addiction is just as painful and overwhelming as alcohol or drug addiction. Sex addicts are subject to the same feelings of guilt, shame and often find themselves in an uncontrollable spiral. The life of an active or recovering sex addict is no laughing matter.

PURPOSE: This exercise dispels myths and misinformation about people who identify as sex addicts.

DIRECTIONS: Contact a Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) support group. You may want to use the Web Resources listed below. Attend a support group meeting if it is open to those not seeking support or request an interview with someone who considers themselves addicted to sex. Formulate some questions. Think about the following while you are writing your interview questions:

How has their addiction effected their ability to have a relationship?
How long have they been dealing with their addiction?
What is most helpful in keeping them from acting on their addiction?

It is a graphic and shocking account of a life everyone would like to deny and avoid.

PURPOSE: This exercise encourages you to delve into the world of pedophilia via a fictional character created from hours of research and data about true life victimizers.

DIRECTIONS: Borrow or buy the Life I Lead by Keith Banner (Hardcover - 272 pages [June 1999], New York: Alfred A. Knopf; ISBN: 0375403760] and read it.
