The protest certainly has not changed things overnight. There will still be kids who are harassed on a daily basis my cops because of the way they dress or the color of their skin, and no protest will put an instant end to this.

However, the protest HAS accomplished several positive ends. First of all, it has generated alot of awareness and discussion about police brutality among people who might not have otherwise paid any attention to it. The fact that we're discussing the issue of police brutality on ravewave RIGHT NOW is a positive outcome of the protest. Second, its a message to cops that WE ARE WATCHING YOU and if you behave irresponsibly there is a price to pay. Finally, it was a great oppurunity for kids to release anger and frustration against the cops, and theres nothing wrong with a little catharsis now and then.

I aint contradicting myself at all when i say that, by and large, we have a pretty decent police system in Canada compared to the rest of the world. When kids were smashing the windows of a cop van last saturday, the cops responded by backing off and NOT with bullets or tear gas which they could have easily done, and which is what would happen in most places in the world. The reason why our police system is relatively begign is PRECISELY because we live in a relatively open and democratic society where we're allowed to criticise the police on message boards like this without being shut down, and where we have the RIGHT to protest without being shot at.

On Saturday, I excersized my right to protest, and i stand by the usefullness of that approach.

First of all, that was fucking hilarious!

Second of all, I don't think anyone here is bashing all the people in that building, far from it. If you opened your loft to the public and had DJ's playing without charging cover, then all the power to you. The criticism in this thread was directed specifically at another party that happened the same night which charged cover which some people found inappropriate, given the size of the venue. I wasn't there, so I can't really comment as to whether that criticism is valid. HOWEVER you should be aware that, rightly or wrongly, when you throw a party in your loft ON THE SAME NIGHT as when other lofts are throwing parties, some people may MISCONSTRUE the situation and assume that its all one party and therefore associate your loft with whatever happens down the hall. Unfortunately, that's just a risk you might have to stomach as a price of living in an awesome building.

You people don't get it.

Valentine's Day should be a special day where a man showers love and affection on his woman. He should buy her expensive chocolates, wine, and flowers, taker her out to the best places in town, then lovingly massage her with fine oil back at her place while scented candles add to the aroma.

Then, in gratitude for his kindness and devotion, a woman must then provide her man with steak and blowjobs every day for the remaining 364 days of the year! Now THATS how its supposed to happen.

Its not a NIGHTLIFE review but theres no better place for it, so here goes.

I arrived at Berri as the protesters were assembling at 3pm. It was a cloudy, but mild day. The crowd gradually swelled until it reached over 500 attendees. It was a mix of teenage punks with piercings and dyed hair, leftist students carrying posters, anarchists dressed all in black, and every other conceivable misfit who has a gripe against the boys in blue. Many of the protesters had their faces covered by bandannas to avoid identification. A marching band started playing tunes, belying the protest's festive atmostphere. The streets around Berri were already choked with police, who announced over speakers that we had the right to protest peacefully but that any offence would result in being brought to a "court of justice".

The march began, the crowd assembled, marching behind a large black COPB banner, east on st catherine. Chanting slogans like "no justice, no peace! fuck the police!", the energy of the protest was contagious. There was a vibe in the air that shit could go down at any moment, as together we were strong and could defend ourselves against the cops. Some protesters began picking up slabs of ice or rocks from the street, running ahead of most of the crowd, and hurtling ice and rocks against any police car in sight. A group of protesters found a dumpster and began hurtling it down the street, with another protester perched atop the dumpster, enjoying the ride.

As the protest turned around a street, we noticed two police cars and a police van parked around a corner. About a dozen protesters began running at the police vehicles, hurtling balls of ice. As the cops ducked behind their cars to avoid the iceball onslaught, the protesters kept sprinting towards the police cars, armed with wooden sticks, and began smashing the police van. The sound of breaking glass was heard, the windows of the police van were broken! A couple of protesters then began pulling stuff our of the van, including a large duffel bag, before a bunch of riot cops turned up and chased us in another direction.

As the protest continued, it took on an element of general mayhem and destruction. A number of protesters picked up garbage cans from the street, and began smashing the windows of banks and big chain restaurants, reserving particular emnity for McDonald's. Every few seconds, the loud sound of smashing glass rioched across the chaotic streets, as the buzz of a poice helicopter droned overhead.

At approximately 6 pm, a large contingent of riot cops dressed out in full gear began charging at us down St. Denis, and the protesters began panicking and running to avoid the poice brutality. Eventually the crowd began thinning out, and I started worrying that arrests were soon to come. I ducked in to a shopping mall on St Catherines and removed my protest paramphanelia, trying to blend in with the evening shoppers. Soon, the doors to the shopping mall were locked, and the only way I could leave was by taking the metro. As I walked down St Catherines street after exiting Berri Metro, the streets were absolutely swarming with cops, and had completely surrounded a group of about 20 remaining protesters that seemed destined to be arrested, regardless of whether or not they had actually done anything.

In conclusion, I think both the police and the protesters handled themselves reasonably well. We went out there, spread some awareness of police brutality, and had a rollicking good time in the process.

Of course the term "rave" is inherently ambiguous, but I think we can all agree that a basic requirement of any party that calls itself a rave is a dance floor. If there aint room to dance, it aint a rave. As Noah pointed out, there are larger lofts downstairs that could well be used to throw propah raves in, but #203 aint one of em. Don't get me wrong, I love that loft and its a great place to chill, and I have no problem paying a small cover to help cover their rent/DJ's/equipment. However, if I didn't know anything about the event aside from what was posted on this site, and I bought a ticket expecting a full on rave, then I might just be slightly disappointed. I'm sure Project PLUR was a great event, I couldn't make it there for personal reasons, but it might be a good idea for promoters to make it clear what kind of party they are throwing.

I agree with you on this wholeheartedely, but stop for a moment and consider WHY police brutality is of a lesser degree today than it was during Prohibition or even as recently as the 1960's.

Did the cops just decide to be nicer? I highly doubt it.

Instead, its because people got fed up with police brutality and decided to do something about it. Whether its taking to the streets in protest, drafting a new law, or reporting on police brutality in the media, its only because of activism that the powers of the cops have been reigned in.

We may not be able to prevent every single instance of police brutality, because that would be near impossible. But so long as cops continue to abuse their powers, its our job to interrupt our daily routine for at least one day and take to the streets in a show of support for the victims.

I really hope your joking about the situation in Burma being more amenable to protests. Regardless of the protester to cop ratio, the Burmese generals have been known to order soldiers to mow down unarmed protesters with machine guns - something which thankfully would never happen in Canada.

Nonetheless, I think what your basically saying is that your scared of going cuz you feel it might threaten your sense of personal security. So fine, stay at home with your wine and your girlfriend, but know that there is a bum on the street wincing in pain after being smacked by the cops, kids rotting in jail on trumped up charges, and people being shot at for having the wrong skin color at the wrong time and place, and you are too busy indulging yourself to answer their cries.

If you don't stand up for something, you'll fall for anything.

If you don't want to attend this protest because you don't beleive police brutality exists, then that's a position you have
every right to take. I may think you're hopelessly naive and clueless, but hey, that's just my opinion.

If, on the other hand, you recognize that police brutality exists but are going to stay home on March 15th cuz your too scared of being arrested, then I'm sorry but that's just pathetic. Unless you do something violent, the absolute WORST that can happen is that you'll be arrested and held for twenty four hours, which is a pretty small fucking price to pay for having your voice heard.

Compare that with the hundrends of thousands of monks and ordinary people that took to the streets in Burma to protest against the regime's brutality there, knowing full well that police spies were filming every protester and that you could well end up tortured or detained indefinetely. Compared to that extraordinary display of courage, your cowardice makes me sick.

Show your support by adding to the attending list! [ www.rave.ca ]

I said that I'd rather go to Afghanistan than to Dubai, not that conditions in Afghanistan are better for the locals, which they're obviously not. And right now Afghanistan has no tourists (selfish or otherwise) so obviously tourism has nothing to do with its current ills.

When I travel in developing countries, I stay in locally-owned guesthouses, eat street food, and use local guides whenever possible, thus contributing to the grassroots economy of the host country. So please explain to me how i'm contributing to the poor conditions of third world countries, compared to someone who stays in plush hotels owned to big international hotel chains, where all the fat profits are wired directly to a bank account in Zurich while the local employees are payed peanuts.

I'm more or less with Shindy on this one. Monogamy is neither necessary nor sufficient for two people to be in love and be together. Its not necessary because some people, not many but some, accept that love isn't something that must be divided, that its entirely possible to be fully in love with more than one person at the same time. And its not sufficient because many monogamous relationships suffer from the same problems of jealousy and insecurity that people think only apply to open relationships. Chances are that if your a jealous person and are insecure in your relationship, its not going to work whether its monogamous or not.

No offence Adriana, but I think its unfair to want to be with other people (whether girls or guys) and not allow your boyfriend to do the same. Either you accept that its possible to be in love with your boyfriend and still love someone else, in which case you should extend the same priviledge to your boyfriend, or you think that love is something that must be exclusive between two people. You can't have it both ways.
