So What Is This William Place Afterall?

I was curious to see what the place was all about since I presume it will be around for a 'lil while so I decided to pass by last friday night at Project PLUR.

In my opinion it's an other cyberloft but in this case it's actually a loft. Let me explain...

I understand the whole concept of hanging out with friends and totally get that it's great to be even able to freely practice mixing for those that might not have the means to purchase the equipment. But please be aware of the "unofficial meaning" of the venue and it's rippling effect that it might cause to the bigger assemble.

That being said, I believe it is important that people know that even if events that are being held there are being presented as raves, they are in fact more of a "all night house party". Even though I know most of Marc's friends knew about the type of building this was, I still came across disappointed party go'ers that left the party a little early.

Why am I talking about this so candidly? Because it's imperative that Montreal's rave scene distance itself from the unhealthy image that these type of places might give to the nightlife since I'm sure it is capable of a far more greater stature than simply allowing itself to settle for something unsatisfying.

Marc and company, please don't take this thread as a threat of any kind but rather a necessary warning to prevent any possible degradation or the creation of an other cancer that preys over the rave community such as The Chill.

Finally, to those that might decide to go to the place, please don't be tempted in increasing your consumptions because of the opportunity the place offers.

What do you guys think? Try to keep it clean, I think it's a subject worth talking about...

wait, is this 1619 place, like, a totally new and unused venue? Like, a place where there hasn't been parties happening for years? This Project PLUR thing was totally the first party there and I missed it?!

Fuck.
I'm feeling the no pussy blues right now..

Whether the place has been used for years is irrelevant. I'm bringing up the relevance, importance and possible dangers of using the place right now.

so.. It's a BETTER idea to have parties elsewhere and call the raves (without going into the whole "Well, a RAVE is a party in an illigal/abandoned location, not a location that you rent, today's 'raves' are anything BUT what raves are supposed to be" thing again), which will draw more attention than just calling them parties, but parties at 1619 should be called, wall, parties, because it'll draw less attention to them?

I don't feel like going into the whole "what is a rave" debate. Because that sort of discussion will inevitably split us in the "think bigger" and the "keep it underground" style of mentality. I also dislike labeling things since part of me doesn't approve of such a thing. Besides, 1619 is neither a one-time rented venue nor an abandoned location but rather a place where people live in.

Although on the other hand, when it comes to paying an entrance fee and expecting a certain degree of quality (one that has been set by hard working promoters in this city) one has the right to bring up the questionnable use of the word "rave" to categorize the type of events held at 1619.

Well, it's was an all night party, right? And there were DJs who played electronic music, right? And the location doesn't exactly have permits for hosting events last I heard, anything happening there tends to always have the possibility of getting busted for various reasons (from noise complaints to fire-safety to selling alcohol)..

Ok, so chances are there isn't going to be 100 blacklights and lazers and smoke-machines or too much deco.. But does all that extra superficial stuff really make the diffrence between a house party and a rave?

A few dozen carboard cut-out clouds and some UV paintings don't make a rave, a location doesn't make a rave, it's the people and the music.

My point exactly, you don't need permits for house parties.

I totally agree with you on that Screwhead! Blacklights, lazers, smoke machines and deco doesn't make a rave what it is. But in my opinion, the effort put behind it does! The effort put into finding quality venues that shows the true and proper value of the scene does! (funny how we unconsciently needed to define what a "rave" was afterall, huh?). The superficial stuff are exactly that... unneeded and taken for granted. But we're talking about the bear necessities here: the foundation on which everything relies on besides our willingness to grow bigger and better (I assume that is what we all want right? - If that isn't the case, let me know.)

That's why I don't like to label things but you must understand that there's nothing wrong with trying to give extra value or lightening the image associated to the word "rave". So I'm sorry but seeing someone slander the word just ticks me off...

I'm feeling bien...tres bien... right now..

Alors, c'est comment avoir un rave chez soi?
Ça doit être assez spéciale comme feeling.

Apparently 24 TBA applies to everyone huh?

Hearing this from someone actually living there just solidifies the position many of us (including those that have decided to support privately for whatever reasons) all believe in.

As of now, I'm changing all the events held at cyberloft and 1619 William street to "other" on the calendar.
So What Is This William Place Afterall?
