I think Osama was Al Queda's emmanuel goldstein, and it took the US 8 years to figure it out. And then another 2 years to figure out that they could kill a fictional character if no one knew he never actually existed.

Welcome to partisan politics Canada. I hope you enjoy the hollowing out of your social programs, and a bullshit opposition that doesn't understand how economics work. In 5 years, you'll see what happens when you try and govern from the far right, or attack from the far left.

Liberal for life. Govern from the centre or don't govern at all.

I'll be voting Liberal. Live in a liberal riding, and don't want a vote split...aka voting strategically. I also think a loss of the centerist party would lead to polarized and partisanship, so will be voting Liberal in their times of trouble.

I just said I don't need to have a conversation with people who rather take my words to the extreme than really taking the time to understand my point. Politics do that to people. And, instead, make my own research on what's going on, and try to do my best to find the right party for me, my family, the people and our needs.

like I said talking to others about politics is perfectly fine, without having to know what people will choose at the end.

you can have multiple opinions on multiple parties, and yes it is interesting to know what other people think. but arguing on your final choice is useless.

anyway I said something we can call an opinion on the subject, and you definitely don't agree. Instead of taking the time to see my points or just agree that we don't agree, you add words on what I said based on what you think is right. I have no more time to waste :)

Yeah, I definately don't agree, but I'm not trying to be a jerk :P

Maybe it was the translation, but it in the first post it sounded a lot like hubris, and now I see its really about comfort of disclosing ur preference on the issue. I highly value transparency, and openess in politics, and have no issue with disclosing my preferences. I totally get other people aren't the same way, just like some people don't like discussing gay rights, abortions, sex, drug usage, etc. Everyone has a different comfort zone with different topics.

And, I now understand your point on talking about the issue w/o saying what ur position is. It removes the judgement from the conversation. See? Discussion teaches me stuff :)

So you're thereby assuming, that the research you've done is complete enough, and thourough enogh, and have thought through the issues from multiple view points? You are confident enough in your abilities to not feel the need to test your thesis, or thought process? Thats great for you...others of us aren't quite so confident to think we always have the right answers, or appraoched a problem the right way.

I think talking to others serves as a check to make sure that I'm understanding things properly, have my facts straight, etc. Everyone lives a different life, and has different life experiences, so they can bring out important parts that perhaps I overlooked, or didn't quite understand properly. Also, by talking with others and hearing how they come about their decision, I'm better able understand and articulate what I believe, and why I believe it.

Finally, I also think I should vote for more than just myself. Its not just about whats best for me, or my wallet, but about others in our community. Its not all about me. And if I'm voting for the party i want to make the most positive contribution to certain segments of the population, I feel that I should talk to them, and understand them, how they think, and why they're voting the way theyre voting.

one thing my dad told me, when i was younger, about politics : for who you vote is your own fucking business, so keep it to yourself!

always did, always will! And i never knew who my dad was voting for, there are alot of reason for that like stated above.

another reason is he never wanted to influence my thoughts with his, and always believe in me to make the right decision for my needs! Thank you dad for being awesome

you can have a conversation on politics, but a conversation about your personal choice will bring nothing else than fights because there are still some people on earth that doesn't understand that we are different and have personal opinions

just go vote!

How can you have a conversation on politics w/o making it obvious who you're voting for?

I dont buy the whole "keep who you vote for to youself." It doesn't really work in society. I think one of the reasons the politics in our country is in such a mess is because no one wants to talk about the issues.

---
What don't rural people like about the gun registry? Can we fix it or make it better for them, or do they have to have it scrapped?

Which party is addressing the fact that 80% of health dollars are spent on smoking, alcoholism and obesitiy related problems? Would private healthcare work as an incentive to reduce these problems?

Why does Canada need more prisons? How much is actually being spent on crime prevention? How early are convicts being released before their sentence? How much of violent crime is being committed by repeat offenders?
-----

The problem is that no one wants to talk politics, so we don't have a discussion, so we get our understanding of how we should vote from sound bites, 30 second analysis on the news, and attack ads. We also never get to understand the views of people who vote the other way. Instead they go home, and turn on the tv to listen to whatever the fuck a corporation tells them. Pretty soon it becomes about who are people voting for, rather than a discussion of the issues and the party platforms.

I honeslty believe that the taboo around discussing politics at home, in schools, and with friends is leading to the partisan politics, and dumbing down of politics.

There are 3 million eligible voters under the age of 25 in Canada. If patterns hold true, a little more than one in three will cast a vote in the upcoming federal election — further proof that our young are among the least engaged in modern democratic countries.

But what if every single one of our youth [voted]. What would Canada look like?

One scenario: A Liberal minority and boosts for the Dippers and the Greens (maybe an actual seat) — if, that is, you place stock in small sample polls and expect non-voting youth to vote like voting youth, for which there is no proof.

Epkos Research

While the Conservatives are still hanging on to a fairly stable (if somewhat diminished) 33.7 front runner position, the NDP wave which has continued in Quebec is now gaining a strong foothold throughout English Canada. The NDP stands at 28.0 points nationally and they are seeing important gains in virtually all parts of the country. Michael Ignatieff’s Liberals are stuck at 23.7 points but are still in the game in Ontario.

These results, if they were to hold, would produce a profound transformation in the Canadian political firmament, tantamount and arguably more far reaching than the Reform explosion in 1993. With the current splits, these levels of support would produce 131 Conservative seats but the NDP would have 100 seats while the Liberals would hold 62. Together, the NDP and Liberal Party would have a majority and 31 more seats than the Conservatives, as well as nearly 20 more points in popular vote. It is hard to imagine how these totals would not produce the once unimaginable outcome of a Jack Layton led coalition government deposing Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.

JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHAHAA - they might have destroyed themselves. These guys really are stupid.

CBC
A 500-page dossier of potentially damaging remarks by Stephen Harper has hit the election campaign, but don't blame the opposition parties — it was prepared by the Conservatives.

The thick binder of material, obtained by the Liberals, is a treasure trove of controversial Harper quotes, listed alphabetically by subject matter. It covers everything from abortion to western alienation and dates as far back as the 1980s.

The fact that the Tories felt compelled to research their own leader suggests they believed Harper's past penchant for blunt, uncompromising talk could pose a problem on the campaign trail.

The files include this 2002 boast from Harper, then a leadership contestant: "I'm not ashamed to say that, in caucus, I have more pro-life MPs supporting me than supporting Stockwell Day."

There's also his 1995 assertion that "providing for the poor is a provincial, not a federal responsibility."
