My goal is not to get my name on flyers :) it never was... I like creating music and coming with what i hope to be unique/new sounds. Im more interested in getting my music in video games and internet movies than ego tripping while playing mp3s to a crowd of 12 ( cough cough ). I am not from the ¨rave¨ scene... i never created music for raves or partying, im into creative arts. I released music under SEVERAL names during the spam of 14 years and most of what i created was never released ( sat on my harddrive for me and my friends to enjoy). Im not in it for fame or EGO tripping like what most people here seem to be in.

I made music for some Australian video game that was bought by the governement to teach kids how to type faster... im played all over Australia ;) I also made my own freeware video game that had great success on the internet. It was even included in east-european pc mags. You have to understand that your ¨local scene¨ is such a fraction of what electronic music is, or what music is for that matter.

And i never said he was HORRIBLE !? i said the transitions could be better.. i liked it.. the music he played was good and i think its whats important. He is not a bad Dj AT ALL, nor a bad aspiring producer. Its getting an attitude from a dj who plays to a crowd of 12 and think hes the greatest thing to ever happen in montreal that bothers me. 12 persons were whatching you buddy , 200 000 or so was at the jazz festival that day. I dont own a mac .Logic is on mac only since 2002 ( if i remember correctly ) it use to be on pc too. Its only a midi sequencer/daw... they are all the same ; cakewalk , cubase etc.. I use to have a student job teaching that stuff at click music in Québec city in 2000/2001. Very intuitive software but for some reason i learned with cakewalk's products and always prefered them after that.

so.... kode six , What musical theory classes did you take to come up with your album ? what part of your album can you point out where music theory was a must... and why ?

Deadfunk... im trying to say sound design is a lot more important to electronic music than traditional music theory... for exemple... you could be the best music theorist in the world... but if want you own is a casio keyboard... you probably wont get much praise... but you could have a 808 and a 303 .. dont know shit about what c# means but create ¨good techno¨

the tools you own and how you use them is probably more important than knowing all the chords there is to learn on a keyboard.. to make techno you only need to learn basic music theory imho... lets admit it... its 4x4 repeted beats ( wich is the most simple beat you can think of ) and melodies more simple than what we use to play in grade school on our flutes ( usually 3 notes melody )

thats the simple reason why i think Alien_zed doest need music theory classes from james... he already seem to have all the skills needed.. he knows how to compose a good track... just needs to jazz it up... its all in the samples , in your synth sounds and how creatively you mix it up.

Now for the filter of a 303 ... i was refering to a certain ¨magic¨ that only trial and error can get you... to a certain magic that only using the right equipement can get you... why is everyone after certain synths... because.. a lot of times in techno... the sound of the synth makes the music...

Now im not trying to destroy everythi9ng that has been know on music for thousands of years... im just trying to say the truth is elsewhere than music theory as far as i am concerned.... for examples... trance riff are so basics... you dont need music theory to perform them... but you need to know that a detuned phased sawtooth with just the right delay and reverb is needed to make them sound ¨trancy¨. Knowing how to adjust the ADSR and choosing the right filter and wich resonance level is more important than knowing the theory behind that 3 notes automaticly generated by an arpegiator melody ( hahaha ).

Bottom line... :) everyones happy.... arent we ?

No... im just saying.. im not sure traditional music theory is absolutly neccesary to come up with great electronic music. imagination a sense of ¨what sounds good¨and technical know-how is most often all you need.

What musical theory classes did you take to come up with your album ? probably basic stuff but lots of time spent twiddling knobs right ? problably more time tweaking knobs and messing with sequencers than learning actual music theory im sure.

ie : music theory cant explain what makes the sound of filter/resonance/accent filter of the 303 sounds so nice... well its the basis of a whole gendra of electronic music.

sorry for the poor encoding... mp3 encoding was kinda early back in 97-98.. didt know how to make the most of it.

Often the djs try to make cool transitions or just tweak the music in real time ( in hope of wowing the dancers ) by playing with the eqs and highpass\lowpass\bandpass filters... Im not talking about getting the tunes to sound right... im talking about trying to have a sort of musical performance going on my tweaking the mixers knobs and taping in effects and whatnot... it wasent that bad at all ... sorry if it sounded like it was horrible... i just feel it breaks the flow sometimes. Rarely do i feel it add to the overall experience. At least no-one was going nuts on is korg kaos pad thingy hahaha, i went to a party once were the dude was REALLY happy about it kaos pad... ruining everything.

Ho i think he did and i did too... but ¨professionals¨ are sometimes too ¨textbook¨ . They will compare the effects of cannabis to schyzophrenia for example... they never had any drugs and never had any side-effects from them or suffered from any mental illness... so... sometimes its really awkward dealing with them... thats why i think he was asking for advices. I dont really have anymore to tell him than what he is already doing..

I find going to the gym helps... drinking instead of doing mind altering drugs... surround yourself with good people ( no fighting or mind games ). Dont do things that gets you thinking too much ex: long walks, find the ideal amount of sleep ( for me less is better than too much ). Take your meds just before going to sleep so feeling asleep is ok and the hunger kicks in when already sleeping.

anyway , you pretty much have to learn living ¨this way¨ ... i sometimes compare it to somebody having an accident and as gone blind... or is missing a limb... you have to adapt and learn how to live again...

I know exactly what you are going trough... had a full blown psychotic episode that lasted months... down im down to memory and attention problems + voices and weird feelings.... at least i am back to normal occupations and can still party ( in moderation ).

i dont think any music theory lessons from you james, is music production skills are very good. He just needs a great lead sound/melody and some more beeps and noises thrown in there. Awesome track.
