Actually Rebel MC didn't make it down for the tour. The other MC besides Top Cat was his protege, I forget his name. Caddy Cad was in the house too, and so was the DJ, who's name also escapes me.

And by the way, I don't personally make any money through this..it's not a comission kinda job. I just want people to know what's available. I'd gladly put up lists of techno and breaks and house and booty and electro and hip hop, but I simply don't have the time. I'm the d&b guy, so that's what I focus on.

It’s that time again, time to get off your ass and pick up all that shit you’ve been sleepin’ on! We’ve got a shitload of new titles in the store and I can’t go on another day without letting you wonderful people know what you’re missing.

[DRUM & BASS]

Break – Ruff n’ Tumble/How It Should Be on Invaderz.
The genius broadens his sights once again, dropping another hit, this time for the Invaderz crew. ‘Ruff’ keeps it on the tech side of things while the flip brings forward the more chilled out melodic flavours. Another quality release from Break showing his knack for making records with 2 sides that you can actually play.

Nu:Tone – 3 Bags Full/Strange Encounter on Hospital.
As promised, the sampler for Nu:Tone’s forthcoming album is here, and deliver it does. ‘3 Bags’ is that perfect blend between soulful and funky, without getting too cheesy this tune uses tightly edited samples and a rising melody that makes me want to dance in bedroom. Have you ever seen me dance? I don’t do it often people! ‘Strange Encounter’ takes a step back from the dancefloor but still manages to light the fire, featuring r&b style vocals from Natalie Williams.

Future Prophecies – Elektra/Eastern Organic on Soundtrax.
While this label is still young, its has already proven itself with hot singles featuring Blame, Big Bud and Klute. Now the mighty Future Prophecies have come to town and they mean business. While not as insanely heavy as some of their better-known works, ‘Elektra’ still manages to impress, but its ‘Eastern Organic’ however that really lights my fire. Coming in on a deeper tip, it’s very reminiscent of TeeBee’s earlier productions, mimicking even Photek’s minimal mastery of days gone by.

Noisia + Pacific – On Your Mind/Crippled on Soundtrax.
Dude. It’s like the lords of neurofunk came together and fucked….underwater. ‘On Your Mind’ is some of the best work to date from both these crews. While ‘Crippled’ showcases the talents of Pacific alone. Two hits for Soundtrax in one week? Boh!

Optiv + Gridlok – Panache/Hive + Gridlok – Awakening on Project 51.
I honestly don’t know how this record is still in the store. Not since ‘Heatwave’ has Gridlok produced anything this good, and this records has 2 SIDES of it. Cause 4 Concern’s Optiv joins in on ‘Panache’ which is like ohmygosh and all that, but then flip it over and what do you get? Hive taking his turn! L.A. massive represent on this one!

Baron + Fresh – Super Nature/The Shakedown on Breakbeat Kaos.
“Corey, I need some BIG choons man, I mean REALLY BIG, BIG ROOM, FUCKING BIG.” Stop your bitching now please. Super Nature is like Roni Size’s ‘Snapshot’ remixed into the phattest crowd stomper ever, by 2 of the scene’s top players. The only thing that might top this record’s “bigness” is the NEXT single on BBK coming this week….from Distorted Minds. Don’t forget the picture-disc version of this twelve, which includes a different b-side: Fahrenheit.

Marcus Intalex + D.Kay – Transition/Ill.skillz – The Beat on Ill.skillz.
This has to be one of my favorite records right now. It’s like when Reese conceived the whole chocolate and peanut butter thing, Marcus Intalex and D.Kay simply go together. Needless to say, ‘Transition’ is the bomb, and it is my dream to play it on a large sound system for a large crowd of people, so that all may bask in its glory. ‘The Beat’ is Ill.skillz at their best, heavy on the drumwork, and just a little bit trancey, without going off the deep end. Buy on sight.

Future Prophecies – Thunder & Lightning/Deceived on Under Construction.
When DOA boss DJ Fresh decides to pick up a couple of your tunes, that’s a good thing. But when he decides to start a whole new label and use your tracks to launch it? That’s a REALLY good thing. Big props to the professors of prophecy on some of their biggest material to date….but ‘Dreadlock’ still rules.

Probe + Sylo – Drums Like This/Rhythmic Culture on TOV.
How could I write my reviews without mentioning Jase’s favorite tune? Guy plays this record so much he’s gonna need a 2nd copy. If you don’t like it, that’s ok, Jase is giving ‘Rhythmic Culture’ more than enough love for all of us.

DJ Fresh – Cactus Funk on Human Imprint.
It may be a little late, but Dieselboy does us the favour of releasing 2002’s ‘Cactus Funk’ on limited edition one-sided vinyl. Add to that the fact that it’s domestic (no crazy import prices), and you’ve got yourself a hot funky unreleased jam from Mr. Bad Company himself.

DJ Deval – Drop Kick/Jah Creationz on Reformed.
I’m simply going to assume that you haven’t listened to this one yet, because ‘Jah Creations’ is the sleeper hit of this month. An unassuming intro drops into a wicked vocal, followed by a massive tweaked out bassline. This being a Formation sub-label, it’s no surprise that the clown-step name gets thrown around, but this record still manages to kick it up a notch. Solid.

Marky & XRS – A Mosca/Striptease on Bingo.
This record has already sold out, but luckily I saw it coming and have plenty more copies on the way, arriving Thursday. ‘A Mosca’ has to be one of the best tunes from this brazilian crew since ‘LK’. Sharp, slamming drums stutter their way to the breakdown and in comes a funky guitar riff building up all the way to the drop, and then….BASS. There’s even a 3rd drop with some extra bits thrown in to make this a track that will not be leaving my bag anytime soon.

London’s Most Wanted feat. Ray Keith – Rasta Love EP on Chronic.
Ray Keith takes us on a trip down memory lane, with rich ragga vocals and his trademark drum kits. The standout tune here will obviously be Ray’s remake of the classic ‘Under Mi Sensi’. Overall a well-timed double-pack of dub-step jungle, from a name you can trust: Chronic.

Potential Bad Boy – Warn Ya (Ebony Dubsters Remix) on Ganja.
This one has been flying off shelves worldwide and Montreal is no exception, only a few copies left of this limited edition one-sided smasher. Shy FX & T Power grab hold of PBB’s classic ‘Warning’ tune from Ibiza Records, and update it into another ‘Muderation’. Absolutely devastating.

Fugees – Ready Or Not (Ganja Kru 2004 Remix) on White.
Back in once again, if you don’t own this, you simply can’t call yourself a junglist. Hype and company join forces to re-re-mix the Fugees classic. This time you get cleaner drums, heavier bass, and an even sicker breakdown. Also included on the flip is the original bootleg remix from years ago, the one that started it all.

Marvelous Cain – Dub Plate Style/Roll Dat Shit on RIQ.
The Hitman digs into the vaults to bring you some of his classic IQ jungle. Remastered for your mixing pleasure this twelve brings back a lot of memories, if you missed it the first time ‘round, I highly suggest checking it out, because you might not get another chance.

Trungle is a retarded word used by Ben and very few others to describe what was ALREADY classified as Trance 'n Bass, which is just as shitty a name. John B pushed the sub-genre for a while, but there are tons of artists and tunes that use trancey bits in drum & bass, and that's what the term was used for. People in the scene generally hate the term, they also hated my other idea: progressive jungle.

It's all d&b.

Wow, great party. I want to thank Noah for having me down to jam it in an old school 'ardcore way, it's been a while man! Thanks for the great timeslot, the "dj" booze was also much appreciated, and overall just keeping things on lock. I met alot of nice people including the owner of the venue (which is normally a record store), as well as the guy from Psyconaut. I thought the band was great, and while a little out of place, thye still fucking rocked. I definetly had a wicked time during my set, although my headphones were a little fubar, i managed. Thanks to Gobstopper for the intro/outro, respect to you and the t.dot crew. Special thanks to Miller who I hadn't seen in AGES, nice conversation about anything and everything man. So yeah, basically, a fantastic night, which ended with fantastic Sausage McMuffins.

Peace,

Well well, another long gap, and here I am again…writing reviews. The only excuse I’ve got for the delay is that every single week in December, the new records would show up and then disappear within a matter of hours! The idea of writing reviews for records that were no longer in the store did not sit well with me, so I did what any self-respecting junglist would do…I ordered more records!

[DRUM & BASS]

Chris Su – Luster/Grim Reaper On Subtitles.
Once again Chris Su proves why he is a leader in d&b production, not just in his hometown of Budapest but worldwide. Dropping his first solo release for Teebee’s Subtitles imprint you know this one’s going to be a winner. Shit-hot synths rip their way through ‘Luster’ in Chris Su’s trademark style, while ‘Grim Reaper’ sees him taking a more heavy approach as on his DSCI4 releases. All-in-all one of his best yet.

Noisia – Hubcap/Backdraft On Subtitles.
Ummm, how can I explain this one? Noisia comprises of a bunch of guys from Norway who’s names are completely unpronounceable. They’ve had tunes released already on Nerve, Payload and Shadow Law. Oh, did I mention they’re ON FIRE right now? I burnt myself just typing the track-title. Get ready 2005, cuz Noisia are coming, and ‘Hubcap’ is only the beginning. A double-pack from Moving Shadow is waiting in the wings to signal the apocalypse, and at that point I say it’s a no-holds-barred fight to the death between them and Pendulum. The winner gets an intimate dinner with Matrix. Maybe I should go overt that with him first…

Calibre & High Contrast – Mr.Majestik/The Other Side on Signature.
Dub dub dub dub dub dub. That’s word on the street these days innit? Don’t be fooled by imitations people, these are the originators. Contrary to what many people think, the dub-step sound people are talking about 24/7 these days, has been around for some time. With that said it’s nice to see it getting a bit more acceptance these days, with artists as diverse as Cause 4 Concern and Cyantific giving it a go. But please make no mistake people, when it comes to dub, Calibre is da man! ‘Mr. Majestik’ has been one of the most hotly anticipated tunes this past year, and now that it’s out I can see it was worth the wait. Classic reggae vocals, alongside beautiful horns and some head-nodding bass, how could a partnership like this go wrong? Big surprise, it can’t. Buy on sight.

Amit – Sound Warrior/Motherland on Commercial Suicide.
Amit is one of those guys with a very particular sound at the moment. While I can’t quite describe his drum programming in words, I will say that his tracks have a very “eastern” vibe at the moment. Both these tracks remind me of that time I was wandering in an Arabian desert and had no water, I started to get delirious and hallucinated that Aphrodite was the best producer in the world and everybody made tunes just like him. Suddenly I woke up and realized that I’d been sniffing Febreze from a paper bag all night…I’ve never even been to the desert! Then I put on this record and felt all Twilight Zone-ish. Weird.

SKC & Chris Su – Desert Siege/Crash on Commercial Suicide.
It looks like good things come in two’s this week. First there were 2 new singles from Subtitles, and now 2 more from Klute’s Commercial Suicide. SKC & Chris Su bring more dancefloor business to the table with ‘Desert Siege’, a wicked melodic intro builds up to a big off-key bassline that devastates. ‘Crash’ comes across sounding more like a classic Decoder & Substance hook up, but gets away with it nicely.

Wayne Wonder – No Holding Back (Suv & Surge Remixes) on Playside.
This one’s strictly for the jump-up massive. Wayne Wonder’s chart topping reggae hit gets reworked for the launch of this new label from Full Cycle crew Suv & Surge. Generally formulaic in it’s sound, both of these mixes to exactly what they’re supposed to do, one version more dancefloor and the other more liquid.

Bad Company – Rush Hour (Sonic & Silver RMX)/Sonic & Silver – Speed Of Light on BC Presents.
The Accidental Heroes join forces once again, this time to remix an all time classic from the Bad boys. ‘Rush Hour’ has always been a standout tune with its solitary synth intro rising into a crescendo of high frequencies obliterated only by the drums and bass which follow. Sonic & Silver have taken the essence of the original and added their own dirty drum-work to the mix, reinvigorating it for the masses. And if that wasn’t enough, ‘Speed Of Light’ is an absolutely wicked original from S&S proving they can hold their own on any twelve.

Roni Size – No More feat. Beverly Knight & Dynamite MC/Trust Me VIP on V.
The next two part single from Roni’s ‘Return to V’ album is here and it’s got “radio” written all over it. While d&b may not be everyone’s cup of tea on this side of the ocean, I think this album’s going to turn a lot of heads, and house diva Beverly Knight definitely helps that cause. All that aside, the VIP mix of ‘Trust Me’ is an essential tool for any serious dj playing regularly. Don’t miss that second drop!

Roni Size – No More (High Contrast RMX)/Want Your Body (Calibre RMX) on V.
So here’s the mix I was looking for! High Contrast takes everything that’s good about the original, and makes it even better, stripping down the vocals, adding his now trademark orchestral horns to the mix, and giving it that Hospital bounce it so desperately needed. Calibre also comes correct on the flip, doing his best to make Joe Roberts’ vocals sound not-too-cheesy and still make a winner. Could we expect anything less then the best from the Mr. Calibre? Both remixes are textbook definitions on how to make someone else’s tunes sound better.

Raiden – Bare Knuckle Fight (C4C Remix)/Resonant Evil – Doomsday Device (Loxy & Verse Remix) on Outbreak.
Every producer has a track that really defines them as an artist, and dictates their style. ‘Bare Knuckle Fight’ is one of those for Raiden. Usually when it comes to these tunes, artists don’t like to let just anyone start messing around with ‘em and possibly turning them into garbage. So for Cause 4 Concern to get the green light on this, you know it’s going to be special. The perfect yin and yang of neurofunk and tech-step collide on this remix to create and excellent roller for the dark room massive. Loxy & Verse do a nice job on flip, making Resonant Evil’s mundane ‘Doomsday Device’ actually listenable!

Phantasy, Shodan & UK Apache – Gimme De Gal (Simon Bassline Smith Remixes) on Ganja.
As if the original version wasn’t big enough, the king of the thumpers steps up and cranks the whole thing up to another level. This tune can only sound good on a HUGE sound-system, otherwise I thinks it’s just being wasted. So let this be a note to you all: buy bigger speakers! And then buy this record! And then….buy more records! Ok that’s it.

Various – Spine EP on BSE.
4 dark tunes from the people that brought you the Driving Insane LP. Black Sun Empire naturally contribute a scary piece of work with ‘Fearless’, and Skynet makes his second appearance on the label with ‘Night Raiders’. Newcomers Jade & Matt-U come with a stunning debut in the form of ‘Got Lost’, but the real standout here is a collaboration between Chris Su and Rawfull called ‘Panorama’. Wicked keys build up a trance-like intro after which the bass drops and Chris Su once again injects the neurofunk as only he can. Fucking awesome.

Zinc feat. MC Eksman – Drive By Car on Bingo.
Zinc shows us why he’s one of the top guys in the scene at the moment with yet another fine example of MC laced d&b. Now you know he’s done the Ready Or Not Bootleg AND the Shook Ones, he even recently remixed Jesus Walks, but now he’s taking it a step further with some original vocal material from the Eksman! The vocals are excellently executed, however I’m leaning more towards the dub mix on the flip, less vocals really allow Zinc’s production to shine through. Top roller bizzness.

Various – Renegade Rollers Vol.5 on Renegade.
All your favorites from the smoother side of things on this double-pack. Mostly vocal tunes as well so if you’re expecting this one to be like Vol.4 I’m afraid you’ll be a little disappointed. Nevertheless, solid production on all 4:
Holdtight – Feel Like Jammin’
Basic Operations – Today My Love
Crescent – Right There
David Carbone & Kubiks – Lovin’ Me

Q Project – Ask Not/Times Up on CIA.
This has got to be one of my favorite smooth tracks right now. Q Project, the better half of Total Science, comes through with some of his best material in ages, sampling JFK’s famous speech. The tune isn’t that busy, and doesn’t even try to make new ground, what is does however is make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and not many tunes do that for me right now. As a matter of fact, I think I’m going to put it on right now…

Various – Hardware Chronicles Vol.4 on Renegade Hardware.
Lots of new artists breaking through on Renegade Hardware these days, seeing how their regulars aren’t really making the waves they used to. Most of these tunes are following the growing trend of stuttering drums and big switch bass, basically what Pendulum is known for at the moment. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I’m hoping the scene doesn’t get too saturated because it’s a good sound right now. Check it out:
Unknown Error – Shadows
Skitty – Fall Down
Spor – Haywire
Bulletproof – Fifty South

Castor – Emily/Le Metro on Nu Electro.
John B signs some new talent to his fledgling Nu Electro imprint. ‘Emily’ is quite literally electro at a drum & bass tempo, while the flip breaks the mould and actually goes for the real thing at 120 bpm. Both feature vocals and both are kind of boring. Still, props to John B for trying to push something different on all the narrow-minded purists out there.

Next week….Follow The Leader!

Doesn't smuggling usually involve being crammed up someone's ass, inside a balloon?

Oh yeah, it's on!

And you guessed it, we're having the contest again...this time I'm putting down some rules dammit!

So the deal is this, guess as many ARTISTS from the back of the flyer as possible and win either a free beer OR a free mixed drink, depending on how I feel! All submissions for this insanely awesome contest must be emailed to yours truly at djcoreyk@gmail.com no online posts will be considered, be sure to put "insanely awesome bullshit contest" in the subject header so I know what it's for. All contest submissions must be made before January 8th 11:59 PM or else it don't count sucka! Oh yeah, ONE submission per person, ok? None of this 5 emails in a row cuz you forgot something.

Fuck that took a long time to write....I hope you people appreciate the lengths I'm going to here just to hook you up with a free drink. Maybe we should offer something extra?

Ok I just decided, a new bonus prize will be announced shortly, don't expect anything crazy, the night's called Some Old Bullshit for a reason you know...
