It was said that cnn helped end the Vietnam war by showing the peoples what war really was: lots and lots of peoples killing each other.

Right now we working really really hard, thinking, improvising to keep these projects open. I know im doing the right thing and all this work is not futile, because when I talk to the villagers during patrols, they want schools, getting an education for their kids making their lifes better.

well that's commendable. people need help. but people need help all over the world. why are you specifically there, meddling? bottom line is, you guys are in a very foreign country that was illegally invaded. you're there because the Americans and the Brits leaned on Canada to help occupy the country. you're not there as peacekeepers. you're there to kick ass... in unfamiliar terrain, far from home. read what Sun Tzu had to say about that in the Art Of War.

I'm well aware it's a guerrilla war. And that's the problem. You wanna win “hearts and minds” but the people you're fighting are mixed in with the general population. Eventually the troops get tired of fighting shadows, and they begin to view the civilians and the guerrillas as one and the same. Which they often are.

Next thing you know the soldiers start abusing the very same people they are allegedly there to protect.. detaining them, beating them, torturing them, killing them in “friendly fire” incidents. So guess what. Those civilians want revenge for what you did to their family, so they become guerrillas too. And the military doesn't even bother to differentiate between freedom fighters and the real bad guys. they just call em all “Taliban” or "insurgents", and bomb the shit out of everyone.

Problem for you is, they've been guerrillas and bandits in that land for so long, they know the terrain like the back of their hand. and you need help to fight them, so you hire locals as scouts. only little do you know, those locals are actually spying on you for the guerrillas.. tipping them off. so they escape your raids, and get intelligence on your movements. now it's their turn to hit back, so they launch hit and run attacks while you sleep, and maim your comrades with booby traps.

so now you want payback. but since you can't find the enemy, you take it out on the locals.

it's a pattern that's been repeated in "counter-insurgencies" all over the world. starts out as "hearts and minds" but quickly spirals into human rights abuses and war crimes.

you know what else was very low during the Taliban reign... opium production! Wow. Interesting now that NATO is occupying the country, it's pumping out more Opium than ever. How does that work, exactly? Are you fighting insurgents or Opium Lords? are these Opium Warlords friends or enemies with NATO? Both? That's quite a moral quandary. and tactically, it's a recipe for disaster.

Gee. Maybe it was a bad idea to get involved in this can of worms.. but whatever the Americans want though, right? I mean, after all.. 9/11. nuff said.

well ya it's had a long history of foreign powers messing with them and occupying them.. The Moghuls, the British, the Russians, and now, an American/British alliance which Canada has very stupidly joined. They'll eventually get sent packing too. These guys are tough as nails and are masters of guerilla warfare. You'll never beat them. Never. nor it it your business to do so. They're on their own soil. You have no moral right to be there, and they've got nothing to lose.

What would you do if an alliance of Iraqis and Afghan soldiers bombed and occupied Quebec?

you clearly haven't read much about the history of Afghanistan. Read up on “The Great Game” - this was the struggle between the British and Russian empires to control the region.

what's ugly is, you think that people have to suffer in these stupid American wars.

well joining the army and being a puppet of the American military isn't gonna solve the world's problems. Gandhi and Siddartha Gautama saw the same strife and suffering that you see in the world today.. but they didn't try and end human misery with military solutions.

Jeez, It's like the right wing version of the Godwin law. If a thread goes on long enough, Basdini is sure to call you a leftist.

At least I can admit when I'm wrong, unlike most right-wing proponents, who will ram their pseudo-scientific views of politics and economic management down your throat and call you a communist/leftist/socialist/hippie for disagreeing.
