I'd like to keep all my installations/presets/configurations etc etc if I can. Completely re-installing windows all the time isn't always an easy task. Just to re-install all my vst's + vsti's takes long enough, plus a million other settings in a number of other programs.

I suspected my cd/dvd drive was malfunctioning, cuz it was making weird noises, while installing windows, then freezing the computer. I went out and got a new one, slapped it in, yet the same freezing occurs while installing windows.

I also tried "Install Windows" on the same HD as my previous install, and it see's that there is already windows, and gives you the option to "Repair".
I started that, and it starts deleting a bunch of system files, then copies them all back in, but my computer keeps freezing during this process...

Partitioning my drive isn't gonna stop the freezing. I have the whole HD backed up on another drive also, so...

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing the freezing?
I know it could be a number of reasons, but narrowing it down will def help.

True dat.

Word of the wise tough, sometimes, spending a whole rainy sunday afternoon reinstalling OS and all the apps you actually use, then running a ghost on a pristine install, can make all the difference when shit like that happens.

I know it sucks, but no amount of patching up will fully restore the install.
I mean, you can patch that file, but there's a reason it went corrupt in the first place.

:)

Yea totally. I have a good program that backs up images, the reason I didn't do it last time tho, was cuz I didn't have the free space to save the image lol.
Week after week pass by, and next thing you know it's too late. :/

sounds to me like either the hard drive is dying or your IDE controller is dying. I had that happen to me with a HD biting it a while back.. everything was running fine, then one day it just rebooted out of the blue and gave errors booting up.. reinstalled windows but half way through it would freeze/lock up, etc..
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

then it narrows it down to some other hardware problem.. IDE controller that went bust, RAM that got bad, CPU heatsink/fan too covered in gunk making it freeze.. Either way you're going to need a new bit of kit at this point, and finding parts for older computers is more expensive than parts for new ones.. Ram is something like double the price for half as much because no one stocks up the older stuff anymore..

In a perfect world we'd have two identical machines for GhostCasting. First machine would create an image and have our main preferred settings, the second would be the "test bed" That, or a Virtual Machine running with off-site back-ups to test new things and also be the provider for cross-referenced re-ghosts.

uhm, yea, thanks. Now my computer works like a charm. I can even boot in Linux for some strange reason.

Like I mentioned before, My PC keeps freezing while recovery is copying files to the system.
I have several freshly burned versions of windows, installing from a brand new dvd-rom, onto a new HD.

I have a lot of work to get done, on a short timeline. Laugh all you want, but unless you have some suggestions of how else to resolve this problem, why not just keep your geek boutique comments to yourself.

Are you just booting/running from a live CD, or have you got it installed on a drive?

Seriously, because you spend all your waking moments dealing with computers and it's obvious for you doesn't mean you have to yet again piss in someone's corn Flakes and insult them about it.

With such a helpful predisposition, I'd never hire you as an IT guy or computer consultant.

and guess what , i know how to fix it , but since you ppl are all up against me , have fun walk it off

and no i wasnt making fun of you dialect >> LIKE SO MANY OTHERS if you would have read throughly and thoughtfully you would have realised the semantics in my sentence back there that make me laught at all those moloch "journaliers" for hires that know not even half of what you can do on a bootup screen let alone a hole computer.

you got bootstrap hog, if reinstalling the ntldr doesnt work you need to binary inject the mbr again and make shure the whole loading sequence hasnt been compromised by other software as well as testing for hardware faults like bad wires , over heated board , surface test etc..

this is common in both overheated computer and software exploits. with experience you could easily stress test both possibility, BUT WHAT AM I A FUCKING TEACHER . gotten more flowers i wouldnt piss back in the forums , sucks to be all of yall. immago play with my working computers now. taataa

and shure keep sending me emails , about free advise , and just bitch me back live on the forums when you never even mentionned i provided working info for you to start off. but you know im used to your antisocial"enfant-rois"kids here.

>you can try your old games moloch , but we all know you have a room fan, possibly trashed or would work better there than dropped on top of your computer when they sell for 2.50$ , shows how much of an enriched life YOU have , but more even more funner is than you give advice on comp maintenance , i doupt you even know what termal compound is or the revalance of it. gotta teach everything to you kids while singlehandedly your spiting in our faced bogus farts.

and for the turd version i could spin it for you in the same devious way , saying you spend all your fucking time on this suckfuck forum , lets call it meatmarket for the rightous matter , and say you spend all your time on the meatmarket trying to show us how your dick inflating machine worked for you last night when we dont give a shit. but of course democracy is how you spin everybody , not every single opinion and being open about every possible outcomes, and if i can make it more unintelligible for you let just me say to you politely with a cherry on top get fucked and just shut your trap if you cant be a nice gentleman.

but of course , you morons will just add to the dramma , and i will add the same, cuz, thoses trolls are scuzzback and i will make shure to serve sleaze to you sleaze util treaten differently from your dispshit preconcived attitudes and ego bashing

@cutterhead, but did you really need to word your post so rudely to those who were only trying to help? I've never had anything bad happen with, I don't even read any of the "arguing/flaming" that goes on. I myself would like to get a lot more respect than you've posted with the general insult which includes me in it.

tl;dr, don't be a dick to me, I have no wish to clash heads with you.

I don't really have Linux installed, that was just sarcasm.

My computer still won't fully boot up, on the drive that already has win installed, it gets past the winXP screen, then restarts.

While winXP cd is repairing, it freezes. When winXP cd is installing on new drive, it freezes.
