I tend to agree with databoy on this one tough.
I a one night event, it's okay to not be able to talk much because of the ambient noise, but on a long run event, I think volume down a little makes room for more convo. I mean, if you're gonna be there for 4 days +, you kinda NEED to communicate:)
I'm feeling eff ew see kay why oh you! right now..

kids absorb and mimic everything around them... especially people
so bringing them somewhere to where they can even only see a few people really fucked up still effects them..

I don't think that worrying about bringing children being in odd environments is being conservative, more like responsible.

The question was about festivals in general, not if it's OK to bring kids to Open Mind. So, fine, even though I wouldn't, it seems safe to drag your kids to ONE hippy jam fest .. whatever, that doesn't mean it's a good idea for any festival.

When i see a kid at any festival (Punk fest, Industrial fest, etc.), who are under close supervision and there for a brief period of time, I think: "Oh how cute! Kid's gonna grow up to be _ _ _ just like their parents! That's cool - rebel young Padawan, rebel!" ... ... But in general, having a bunch of kids at a fest like that, overnight and all, I still think is unsafe.

Hell, kids are unsafe just about anywhere, doesn't mean you can make an exception for anything. Why do you think bars are 18+ ?

On the other hand, parties or festivals designed for kids are alright ...
I'm feeling you up right now..

Not only did she say no but also asked me how could I even think of doing that.
I personally think they would have a blast, but they are not my children so it`s not my choice.
But I wondering what other people think about the idea of bringing children to festivals like open mind?

Just so we are clear about the original question...

;)

I've never been to a party like Open Mind, really, it was a pretty unique experience. There where quite a few peps from Toronto and they had a beautiful luminous vibe to them.

Yes. The volume was very low during the event, with levels reaching "rock out" levels only during the wee wee hours of the morning, (I'm talking 3am-7am) and even then I doubt it was above 100dba. Databoy could give you precise data because he was working the sound.

I've seen more fucked up people on a saturday afternoon in downtown Montreal. If anything, if that is such a concern you'd be better off with your kids in the environment of Open Mind then in a public space within the ville de montreal!

I did see people who were high... and obviously it is impossible for me to see every single person, but overall the people who were intoxicated were very much in control of themselves. There were a few people who were expecially exuberant, but I honestly couldn't tell you if their moods were assisted or if they were just genuinely happy people.

Put it this way...there were no tweaked out ravers shuffling around like malnourished zombies. There may have been a few earthtone hippies who were sitting blissed out in front of gongs or making wierd yoga poses.

Ah sorry, I missed part of the convo there...looks like I came in a bit late.

Anyways...this is a topic that really interests me...I'm gonna track down an article I read earlier this year and come back with it.

I wouldn't bring my young kid downtown either... and with that in mind you may be right that open mind is 'safer' in some senses...
just answer me this, do they play loud full on psytrance?
if so, regardless of what the organizers intend or do, they will attract some of the sort of people it might be questionable to have your kid around... no?
I'm feeling psyfun right now..

Bah I don't know... the way I see it, let people raise their kids the way they want. If you believe that bringing your kid to a festival will do good for him you are entitled to believe that and bring your kid. Maybe that kid would become a crazy dj; start mixing and producing at 8 years old; all jaded and producing minimal by 13.

It becomes a problem I think if the parents decide to indulge and party and not look after the kid.

But to address your statement nads... I would never in 8934721893721 years let anybody else take my kid to a festival. Imagine something happens to your kid... WOW
I'm feeling bad chemistry right now..

As most of u know i have a daughter that i have brought to numerous
festivals but less recently because she is gettimg older and is more
observant of what is happening around her and when i bring her and i'm alone i don't have fun
because i'll never leave her in a tent unguarded except if i exchange nanny duties
wiz other parents!

A lot of kids with hippy parents actually become yuppies cause
thy r fed up of tofu, beards and patchoulie!

I think it's great for children to travel and go festivals
and meet different mentalities as they are plagued with
a conventional and consumer typed education at school and
the whole stupidity that internet social netwerks encouraging
superficiality!

my daughters aunt brought her step-daughters to a festival and they saw naked hippies
on da beach they got
traumatised and told there mother!
these girls though were not used 2 anything like that
cause there mother is a surburbian anxiety case!

so all you kids just take your neices and nephews to see
twilight at the cinema its politicaly correct! lol
I'm feeling hit da road jack right now..

"Typically you have between 2 minutes and 1 hour safe exposure time in a club" 100-120 dBA
SEE GRAPH

"The current study found that 35% of attendees were 30 years of age or older, all having commenced clubbing in their late teens or early 20s. The eldest individual was 42 years and had been clubbing for 25 years. At the average exposure per week of 12.2 Pa 2 h, this implies that this individual has already accumulated a minimum life-time exposure equivalent to 71.4 aye, almost twice the exposure that could be expected from work alone. Further studies at NAL are currently under way to examine attendance rate over time (age)."

and from the Sound Engineer handbook

105 = 1 hour
110 = 30mins
115 = < 25mins

and 84 dBA is recommended to prevent permanent damage

---

In general and in agreement of most of what has been said, if you were to chose a festival OpenMind would be it. Other than that, I lean towards no kids when adults are at play.
I'm feeling punkadelic right now..

This thread reminds me of an interesting anecdote from Eclipse 2008.

I was dancing in the main area around the dance floor with a good friend of mine around 11pm on Saturday night, both high as kites on mushrooms and thoroughly enjoying our night through the looking glass. Suddenly, we stumbled upon an unattended cradle, about 100 feet from the dance floor. We approached carefully, curious but weary of this unexpected discovery. In the cradle was a sleeping baby, seemingly undisturbed by the chaos around. In a peak of our psychedelic high, we suddenly recognized this baby as our new children, gave him a name and started talking to him. It took a few minutes for our peak to pass, as we quickly realized how fucked up this really was...

The issue is not if you should bring your kid to a festival or not. It's more if you should let it out of it's cage or not. I say leave him a bucket of KFC and put a blanket on top of it's cage and go have fun!
