I have serious beef with some MCs... not all of them, 'cause some are respectful... but I've played gigs where they just plug their mic in without asking if it's ok... fuck off... I once let a guy check and set all his levels and right when he signaled to me that he was ready to go, I reset everything and unplugged him. "If I want vocals - then I'll play tracks with vocals." He was pretty pissed and asked why I let him go through all the trouble of getting his shit set up... I told him it was because I knew he'd never try to pull that shit on me again. lol. amazing. I've often felt like doing the same thing. I like working with some MCs.. ones that are talented and appreciate the music I'm playing more than the sound of their own voice... thing is, with the breakbeat hardcore / jungle / D&B that I play, there's lots of stops and starts and samples and vocals in it. it's meant to be mixed and cut and chopped.. it's not a hip hop instrumental. If I'm playing deep soulful atmospheric tracks or jungle tekno, the last thing I wanna hear is some Eminem wannabe spitting hip hop lyrics over top. it just sounds so trashy and mis-matched. and if I'm playing full on ragga-jungle, then an MC is pretty much forbidden - unless I know him personally - like our Illegal Sound Crew MC, MC Enlight, or MC Trigga - that guy is mad oldskool and knows the records I play.. otherwise no way.. they'll just clash with the vocals in the tracks and fuck everything up for me. I know my records very well, and as Fishead said, if I want vocals, I can reach for a record that will say whatever vocal sample I need. but honestly.. people always say "if you don't like the MC, just pull the plug" but in reality, that doesn't happen nearly as much as it should. from what I've seen in Toronto, even well-established jungle DJs often wind up getting intimidated or bullied into sharing their set with these local heros. as much as they'd love to cut the mic, they just put up with it to avoid drama. |
