It's true though.
Not a prank, announced by the folks at Panasonic themselves.

Ah skeptics ^_^
It's not a prank... give me a minute. ... I live in Japan so I've been able to verify things for myself and this is what I found. 1. First of all................... End of production announced on the Panasonic Japan website: "プレーヤー SL-1200MK6生産終了" 生産終了: end of production. SL1200 MK6 - discontinued: [ ctlg.panasonic.jp ] SL1200 MK5 - discontinued: [ ctlg.panasonic.jp ] SL1200 MK4 - discontinued: [ ctlg.panasonic.jp ] SL1200 MK3DS - discontinued: [ ctlg.panasonic.jp ] SL1200 MK3 - absolutely no mention of it in their catalogue SL1200 MK2 - same as above. 2. Japanese media: [ www.asahi.com ] [ www.yomiuri.co.jp ] [ www.yomiuri.co.jp ] It's on tv and on the radio over here. 4. Announcement by Power dj's, a huge retailer in Japan: They are announcing their final sale of SL1200's. Power dj's (Ikebukuro) say they have received an official notice from Panasonic. They are not the only ones... They seem pretty upset about the whole thing... They discuss this announcement on their blog and twitter account (scroll down to October first). [ twitter.com ] 5. Panasonic Osaka is one hour from where I live. So I called Pan. Corp. DAV headquarters in Osaka to confirm the information. I was told: mention of this was made in the ordinary meeting of Shareholders in May 2010. Reasons cited: integration and closure of specific manufacturing sites, from the point of view of optimal production, withdrawal from unprofitable businesses, downsizing of the workforce. 6. Sumiya music store, another huge retailer: "テクニクスがSLシリーズのターンテーブル生産終了するそうです" "Production of the Technics SL series of turntables has ended." etc. etc etc.
I'm feeling g.r.i.m.e.y. right now.. |

They probably have enough overstock to sell a million more units if they will stop making them.

I'm sure someone will come in and fill this niche market.. but the reality is they wouldn't be discontinuing the product if sales were good

Ufot-DEATH COMES FOR US ALL you cannot compare digital and analog , unless its to claim digital yeild worse results with less hardware. analog should never be phased out , its a physical aspect of life that ought to be developped alongside digital. definitely will take over this market if they phase it out

i wonder if they will continue manufacturing spare parts though... im guessing it wont be to hard to have third party parts instead though... i mean there are enough turntables in the world to go around. Some of em' do need to get fixed but it's not the end of the world... whens the last time you heard someone bought a brand new tech-12 anyways?
I'm feeling forward every thurs right now.. |

Dude, I can totally compare them because they are both usable methods for dj's... I wasn't talking about sound quality, I wasn't opening a debate here, I was comparing two methods used by DJ's... And as far as I'm concerned, unless some new rare metal is discovered, I'm pretty sure that Analogue has been pushed to its limit(though I'm sure you'll try to prove that statement wrong) @ Wally : I'm pretty sure parts will be available for a long time to come and the aftermarket most likely will be around till we stop breathing, TT's are tanks with tons of spare parts ;) Ufot-LETS COMMENT FOR THE HECK OF IT

syntax error ? dude get out of that block format of yours. witch is known to be best ? digital photography or film (noise/artifacts wise)
same for music. ufot wat tl;dr lots of trackmasters where discontinued using a bigger format of the cartridge , making them not retro compatible with the old cartridges. imo its a way to cut throat the market before phasing it out.

non-pristine analog is far worse than digital. A brand new needle and record that has been played only a few times sounds great.. but as soon as the equipment and playback material deteriorates then digital whips it.
I don't call clicks and pops good sound quality, most sound people consider those kinds of noise abhorrent. One of the reasons most of the records I have are 180gram and I only play them once in a while.

same for music. ufot wat tl;dr your statement about new rare metal is a fallacy implying digital has some sort of special components. analog is only bigger in quantity of earth metal and use direct "writing" compare to "buffered" ones with digital. work your explaination up a notch , kids with epods makes a mess with the wires at the parties , wax has about 100y of inexhausted usage. because sony claims their mp3 rocks lps doesnt means etune is a real 1:1 alternative lots of trackmasters where discontinued using a bigger format of the cartridge , making them not retro compatible with the old cartridges. imo its a way to cut throat the market before phasing it out. Update » cutterhead wrote on Fri Oct 29, 2010 @ 3:00pm im not an idiot i know how to take care of the EP/LPs
i have been transporting my records for more than 10 y they still sound better than any fucking bit rate sound you get anyoften with complacent idiots that think their rip is anybetter than the original.

Digital is far better than analog in regards to noise with film. They used to consider iso 200 'fast', that's what my digital camera STARTS at. Dynamic range and detail can be better on film vs cheap digital cams though. film cameras are a bargain these days.

WTF??? Cutter, first of all, take a chill pill. Second of all, the syntax was a joke... Third of all, you can say things like "IMO Analogue is far superior to digital", but that still won't change the fact that Technics are stopping production... Fourthly, you are comparing one media mode to a completely different one, complete fail there, sound vs video??? And the new metal joke was meant in the form of a new conduit for sound signals... geez... relax ta noune... Ufot-king of opinions online, are the same offline too...pssshhhh...
