J'aimes les tortues

Its just languages at the end of the day, ultimately the people who win are the people who are BILINGUAL (french AND english). Thats how you survive, expanding your culture & your vocabulary

I mean anywhere else in the world you're considered CULTURED when you speak SEVERAL languages. So if you're anglo LEARN french, and if you're franco LEARN english, Both will only expand your opportunities

I remember reading this scientific article proving that speaking/understanding more than one language has so many beneficial effects, like staving off Alzheimer's and dementia in old age.

Yay for culture :)

A lot of us never had the opportunity to to learn french. I'm pretty sure most algos here aren't from here. It's not our fault, we don't understand that when we're young we should learn french. In adulthood, it's a bit intimidating to try to learn a language from square one (which is where a lot of us start, the french they taught us in school is shit, can't even have a basic convo) I'm not saying we shouldn't learn, because we really should. It opens up a lot of opportunities, not just here, but the rest of Canada, too. There is really no reason for an anglo to live here for a long period of time and not know at least a bit of french. I've met people that have been living here for 6,7,8 years and I know more than them (which is pretty bad) and even met a guy that was born here, but grew up in the west Island, and he can't speak a word of french.....there's really no excuse for that.

i understand that anglos (i mean anglos who live here in a french province) cannot speak french perfectly, but when they can't speak it at all, i think there is something wrong. it happens all the time at my job, i'm at the door (i work in clothing store) and i say "bonjour" to people coming in, and they look at me as they would look at an alien and they're like "what does bonjour mean?" so i asked them where they're from because i first think they're tourists, and they tell me that they're from montréal... wtf ?

I can understand a bit. I haven't had much of a problem yet, although a few people have been short with me. I can't say much, so when people are talking to me, I answer back in english. But I do try. I've been here less than a year and I can understand more than some who have been here for years. Even I feel like I should know more than I do. The ones that refuse are annoying. Don't live here if you have no desire to even TRY to learn the language. I don't get it.

I do miss being able to work anywhere, since all of me experience is in retail and cash and whatnot and I can't really do that here, but I understand why it is harder for me to find work here then it was back home.

Yeah I kind of hate myself now for not trying harder to learn French when I first moved here like 2 years ago. But even now that I look back I would've still had trouble, my school was just... worthless, too many loud/problem kids and the teachers had to run around all the time.

I don't like being harassed for not knowing French though like most cops / assholes do to me , why do I suck because I had no choice in moving here, hell when I was in school in the States we didn't even have a choice to learn French, it was all Spanish.
I'm feeling blank right now..

The french programs outside of Quebec suck ass anyway. My sister was in french immersion, suppose to be pretty much all french, and when she moved here, her french was terrible and she had to take a french course. She's pretty much perfectly bilingual now, but it took a lot of time, marrying a guy who barely spoke english, and living in a small french village in the woods, lol.

In my french classes in high school, we spoke english, like, the teacher taught the class in english, and then we read a book in french, or discussed verbs or wtv...
Most of our other teachers couldn't speak french hardly at all either.

Looking back at it now, I'm still baffled how a town/community existed in this province that way, for so long...
In the past 10 years they've turned most of the forests into new housing, and loads of french families moved in from surrounding areas. So the place is more mixed up now, but I'm tellin' ya, in the 70's, 80's etc, Deux-Montagnes was like 95% english speaking... (I still don't understand why).

anywho...
I'm feeling like a sketchbook! right now..

In my years of playing online games, I've met several people from the US who've had the option of learning French rather than Spanish, and picked it! Though few remember more than a couple words/sentences. Your school just sucked! :D

Hey, I'm from Deux-Montagnes It depends where you were... the area between Chemin d'Oka and the lake seemed to have very large anglo-only areas, mixed in with a few blocks of frenchies *waves*, but the area on the other side of Chemin d'Oka seemed to be mostly French, from what I remember of that time, especially near the library.
I used to know why it was that way, but I forgot.
Also, it appears that there is a page on Deux-Montagnes in Polish on wikipedia. bwuh?!
I'm feeling ribs plx right now..

Well even if we did have the choice I would've stuck with Spanish anyways, being in California and all.. Going to try and take a French course when my work schedule isn't so bad.

Oh, of course. Spanish is a much more logical choice for anyone living anywhere but New England.

yeah, thats exactly what I mean... it's just inconceivable for me that people could live somewhere and not even be slightly curious to learn a couple of words of one of the official languages...
