Actually, there are a lot, IMO. I don't see very many of them going around saying "You should study my career if you want to get booked."

Honestely Na, I can safely say you've booked a TON of assholes in the past, just an observation ;P

I think that is a matter of o pinon. But he hasn't booked you, just an observation. ;)

I mean come on, what are you, the guy who decides who plays or not for the whole scene based on who you think has been generous enough to YOU in the past...I dunno man :P

I really don't see where that came from. He has his own opinions, I don't think he really gives a fuck about who other people book. And it's not about generosity.

thnx for backing me up guys.. i'm trying to avoid communicating w/ said individual online since i've been trying to along with him on the rare occasion we cross paths in the real world ...

i am, however - despite knowing better - pretty fucking insulted right now. which was his goal, obviously. (i'll get over it as soon as the next paragraph is written) ...

i never book anyone depending on how 'generous' they've been to me. in fact, no one besides my family have ever been generous to me. i'm not interested in pity, i'm not interested in sociopathic exchanges of service between DJs/promoters. i'm interested in talented artists who are also capable of doing the right thing when the opportunity arises.

some ppl like making money from their music, i just like making music.

sorry, i have principles, and i stick to 'em, even in the face of hardship, or poverty, or success.

anyway, in reality, i don't give two shits about bliss' contradictory opinions.

bliss, is not a reference .. :p

newsflash: promoters (at least successful ones who throw parties with actual crowds of people) book at least SOME of their DJs bassed on their power to draw a crowd. You don't have to be technically proficient to attract a crowd, they just have to like you for some reason.

y'know... for all the hate he seems to inspire, Bliss makes some really good points... but at some point it should be acknowledged that there are pretty substantial differences between good DJs, successful DJs, popular DJs and nice people... there are certainly some who are all of the above, but they seem to be few and far between.

It's also important to recognize that good is a pretty subjective term. I mean, there's probably a lot of people that cringe when I step up to the decks - there always has been - but I'm looking to express myself, not make everybody happy... don't get me wrong, it's great when the whole room is into it, but my main interest has always been unearthing things that I don't hear other people playing... and it's always a bit of a crapshoot when you mostly stick to the unfamiliar.

Anyhow - there's a shit ton of good DJs out there... some of them make a living at being a DJ, some don't have any interest in that. There's a documentary out there about DIY culture, you should be able to track it down on Youtube - it's called DIY OR DIe... the Steve Albini bit that's not included in the film is really insightful bottom line in his commentary is don't quite your dayjob, because if you rely on your art for making a living... and you struggle then it likely means that you'll end up compromising your art.

I always thought that Dj's who played what the people want to hear were called "sell outs" ??

Fishead is right.. being a DJ is supose to be someone egotistical. meaning, a dj plays what THEY want to hear and if the people dig it.. well, that's the ultimate high.. getting people high off the music YOU choose to shoot at them..

i've been a sell-out before myself.. when playing in more commercial environments, sometimes you have to make sacrifices to please the people who can't handle the truth.. but if that was my life i don't think i'd be having any fun anymore. once in a while, i think its okay to "step out of the box" but to take it as a job to please the people is different.. i don't think i could handel that type of Dj'ing.. i tried weddings and it's fucken LAME as fuck to play all that crap for the people their who have no clue what or where my musical roots come from !!

anyhoo. in both cases, we need all kinds of different dj's, to please all types of croweds.. i've always been more of the geek,.. more on the technical side of djing !!
I'm feeling the other side right now..

Well actually I do get booked A LOT so if some new dj was looking for someone to reference they could actually learn from my career and how I work.

I obviously didn't mean it in an arrogant way, it was just an observation

It is what this thread is about afterall

well I've thrown 100's of parties and I've never booked him...Dosen't mean anything

I can tell you that as a dj I have probably worked with more promoters in this city than any other dj in Montreal

I don't actually see any reason why he wouldn't book me personally.

He's probably one of the only promotors in this city who HASN"T booked me yet

Well him and Bal En Blanc hehehe...

@ Fishead, very few people manage to live off their, some do though.

@ Na, you say you're not in the music business to make money...I'm assuming you never charge cover for events, give all your music away for free and never collect a dj ever?

@ Clown, if you played a commercial event and you felt like you sold out, then yeah you're a sellout.

For me I like MUSIC first and foremost, more particularily good music. I didn't get into djing to be a "techno" dj, a "hardcore" dj or put myself in a corner. Obviously if from the get go if you say "hey man, this is what I am and this what I play" then yeah you're gonna feel like a sellout to your style if you do something else

Pesonally I don't have that problem. From the get go my mission was to play everywhere and to be as musically diverse as possible.
I'm feeling sunshine right now..

Bliss:

there are always people who live off their art... if we look at the art world, for example, you have someone like Banksy who's enjoying huge success - and I don't think he's compromised himself in any way... but there are also those who leap onto whatever it is that's current and try to make cash while they can... there are even those who never really experience any success in their lifetime, die in poverty and are only recognized after their death (Van Gogh is a primo example of this)...

Anyhow - I certainly don't mean to imply that anyone who is successful has compromised, because there are a lot of people who stay in the trenches and stick to their guns and build up enough of an audience to pay their bills... just saying that there are also DJs who think of what they do as an opportunity, not a profession... neither is wrong or right. They're just different.

Fishead I agree 100%, me and you share the same philosophy

Personally I didn't get into djing as a profession, it just became one when I was getting booked so much I could pay my bills with it.

Classic case of doing what you love and living off of it :)

PS: The day I get bored of djing and music I'll just do something else. Right now I'd rather to continue living off of my art.

Oh yeah I forgot to add, for the hate I apprently inspire from certain DJS on here, I'd say they are mainly djs that have not been very successful (UFot, Host One, Jeepee, Clown etc..)

There are the type of jealous assholes who will take any oportunity to take a stab at you in the back. They are the type of "faux" djs who do it for the wrong reasons (money, fame, etc...)

There's a reason I get along with guys like Fishead or Recoil, these are the type of djs that you can actually respect
