I did not know PLUR died. What happened? It just faded away like a fashion?
But it's not a fashion, it's an ideology, so how could it die? Also, it is still used.

And thanks Gamos ^^

PLUR didn't die, it just never existed. Good and kind people are just that : good and kind.

It's just like music where people absolutely need to find a name, a cheesy acronym or a category for something intangible and immaterial 'cause it makes us feel better if we can "tag" it and use that tag to discuss it with other people.

Instead of saying : "this guy is really kind, thoughtful, open-minded" etc etc etc, we just say "that guy is really PLUR". It's easier to say "retard" instead of "intellectually challenged individual", "handicapped" instead of "mobilty impaired person", "hipster" instead of "annoyingly conceided, pompous and yet technological and fashionly inclined individual". Hell, it's a lot easier to say "I'm really digging that dubstep track right now" than "i'm really digging that 120bpm track with that awesome breaks beat and that wobble wobble sound with that beeeeeeeeep sound and the dropdown and cowbell sample in the background".

THAT'S IT. It's not fucking rocket science. It's human nature's incessant IKEA obssession of finding a neat place, word or action for everything we do, say, think, feel and experience. It makes us feel better, reassures us and comforts us to have a cool & hip expression or word for "THAT thing" we love and appreciate so much.

Considering this, Jesus was a gazillion times more PLUR than any of you. And guess what ? That sandal wearing long haired hippy didn't attend a goddam rave in his entire life. So there.

Enough with the PLUR sticker slapping all over everyone's face already. Good people are good and bad people suck. Regarless of PLUR or any other stupid name you come up with.
I'm feeling [__insert emotion here__] right now..

Thanks Fu. So, according to what you say, it isn't important enough to the rave scene to talk about it in my presentation?

you shouldn't be doing presentations on the rave scene for school,

however you seem determined

go read this book

it has pretty good histories of the rave scene for both the UK and for America...
I'm feeling surly right now..

We wanted to learn more about the subject and what's better than doing a presentation to learn about a subject? Aussi on avait a choisir un sujet ayant lien avec la culture contemporaine au Québec qui est arrivé durant les 20 dernières années, alors ça réduit un peu les choix de sujet.

the best way to learn about raves is attending raves, not doing a presentation on them ;)
we try to put words on the rave experience, we try to define it, etc... but nothing can transfer the real thing.

I've been to a few raves, but there are things you can't learn during a rave (Wiki, articles and the stuff you guys given to me ftw). Of course the first thing we will recommend to the class to truly understand how it's like is to attend a few parties ;)

Personally, I tell you to concentrate yourself on the beginning of the electronic music (starting from Musique Concrete with Pierre Scheffer going to Kraftwerk to the whole disco thing that morphed into House and Techno in Chicago and Detroit) rather than just raves. There's not much to say about it (except maybe that the extacy was popularised during the beginnings of electronic music(Summer of love 89)). You can talk about Jungle/Drum N Bass music roots. You can talk about the whole industrial thing going on while Techno and House were being developped. But raves...there's only 2 things to say about it : People were high. People are still high.

There's more meat on that subject. Trust me.
(Kudos if you talk about the 303 and the beginning of Acid House with Frankie Knuckles and Phuture)
I'm feeling horny right now..

We plan to start fast with the DJ story in the 50s, then electronic story in short and the arrival of the most important genres (with a little explanation for each to differ them, I'll do a little sumthin with Adobe Premiere and music samples).
Then we'll come back to DJ, talk about well known ones, popular events, turtablism and how the rave scene and DJ moved here, etc. We'll then talk about some Qc/Ca DJs like Tiga and the scene here, etc. Then we talk about the commercial events, the places where most parties are and why. Then the small parties and how they're scheduled.
We'll critic the DJs playing only for fame and cash versus DJs who play because it's their passion and they're good at it. We'll give exemples of DJs in both sides (I might interview you, Fred! :P). We'll also have to give an argument against our own point of view.
I think that's it... Oh and we'll add something for making the students to praticipate a little to our presentation.

Familiar speech or slang is spoken everywhere in every language. Most people don't speak their "real proper" language. But if you turn on the news, there's a good chance that you will hear "real proper". For instance, Bernard DeRome or Celine Galipeau on RadioCanada will read the news in perfect french, impeccable compared to the language you'll hear in a cafe in Paris. Likewise, you will find a much better spoken french when the news headlines are read in France than in a bar on St-Denis. So it's not about geography, it's about context.
