I never use reverb/delay on the plugins
I use sends for those
I use group tracks when I get to the mixdown stage
I use a lot of compressors because I have so many layers that I need to keep the dynamics in line bu like I said, just one multiband takes alot of juice.

It's just small stuff that adds up. EQ on every channel, compressors on a lot of channels, etc.

Just doing an acid line is like 6 effects right there (cabinet simulator, distortion, different distortion, multiband compression, EQ). That alone can use a chunk of power. I'm pretty particular about how I want things to sound.

The other reason it adds up and that I have so many VSTis is that I dislike tracks that don't do anything different in the second breakdown/chorus. I try to use different sounds and I have a lot of layers, so it's easy to get to 20 VSTis. Think about it:
-lead (2-4 layers)
-counter-lead (1-2 layers)
-arp or something to fill in certain frequencies (1 layer)
-acid that comes in or whatever (1 layer)
-bass (2-3 layers)

When you add in all the variations I'd have (dirty rolling bass in the breakdown, etc.) it can add up to a lot. Having inserts on all those channels (EQ and then often compression on things that need it)

Plus all the filters I use... (usually Fabfilter Volcano 2...which is really flexible and sounds amazing but I might have 5 going at once on a breakdown)

I'd rather have the liberty to work the way I like than to stop doing things in order to avoid freezing. Freezing is one of Cubase's biggest assets so I might as well use it.

I'll concede that synthesis isn't my strongpoint though, so it's not like I'm using a single VST for my lead. I usually have Sylenth1 doing the lower end of my leads and Nexus doing the top (2-4 layers total). Nexus gives me the width I want while Sylenth1 gives me the solid/thick foundation.

I'm sure you guys know what you're doing, and I'm sure you're right that I could cut back on some of the things I do but the way I see it is that it's 2009 and we have dual-core CPUs in our laptops - might as well abuse them ;)

But tbh, I haven't counted how many inserts I have. Maybe I'll do that tonight. I definitely have 25 VSTis though.

well, it happened to me =( when i open massive My daw (Cub 3sx Cub 5 or even Fl 8) crashes

i found this, and it worked!

once massive makes everything crash, you have to delete the "database" file here:

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Native Instruments\Massive

worked for me, until it crashes again, delete it again!

its supposed to work indefinitely , ill test that out! (worked once for now)
