 Coolness: 76685 | I kind of thought that last episode sucked. I don't go around calling people fags and I don't understand people who do. It's sort of childish in fact. If they really wanted to diss bikers they could have done a far better and more intelligent job than to have some homophobic joke that they cover up with the obligatory stereotypical gay characters and trying to argue for a new usage.
Anybody who has gay friends or family can tell you the word faggot or fag and the connotation with burning twigs shows the amount of hate behind the name, and even if the target of the word fag or nigger or whatever else keeps changing so that people can keep speaking ignorantly it's still only an idiot who can't come up with a more articulate description of an annoying biker than fag. Crap episode, totally not creative and left me feeling pretty disappointed. Homophobia is still rampant and no matter what you say when people call someone a fag they're implying that they're homosexual. Any other explanation is a lie. |

Fag is only a derogatory term in North America, you call someone a fag in Europe and you're calling them a cigarette and they're gonna laugh at you. And you mentioned both fag and nigger; well, despite you thinking it's 'ignorant' for having changed the meaning of 'nigger' from a derogatory term for a black person into a word that means 'buddy' or 'friend', I think that that's EXACTLY what we should be doing; a word only has power if you let it have power. Black people are trying (as unconsciously as it may be) to change the power of the word from hate to love, what's so bad about that? It's the same thing with 'fag' these days; fag doesn't represent a derogatory term for homosexuals anymore, it's more of a general/generic "You're fucking stupid/annoying" in one word instead of actually saying "You're stupid" or "You get on my nerves" Language and slang all eventually have to evolve. Bitch now means 'to complain' and is still used to refer to women in a derogatory way, but does everyone get up in arms about how someone saying it is being derogatory to all women? No. And why? Because the language evolved, and the people who were negativley targeted by the word stopped letting it affect them in a negative way and embraced it as a title! How many women are "proud" to be a bitch these days? That's the exact same thing as black people calling each other niggaz, as gay people calling themselves fags, etc.. Stop giving words the power they need to hurt, and they will stop hurting. It's happening all over, and it's happened before. Evolutions isn't just for species. |

It's just that even if a few people evolve there are still people who refer to black people as niggers because they'd like to have them lynched again, people who refer to homosexuals as faggots because they want to beat them up, and people who refer to women as bitches because that's why they feel they have the right to rape them.
It's still a minority that understands the revised meaning of a term, there are still way too many ignorant and hateful people in the world for the hate behind the terms to disappear all because a shock tactic cartoon decides to pretend to be political. I understand the gesture, but it was hilarious in the nigger guy episode and just incomprehensible to me in this last one. I still don't like calling anybody a fag, it makes me feel like I'm in high school using that term. Douchebag is excellent, so is wanker, dickhead, prick, etc... plus I know right away that I'm talking about someone annoying. I personally only hear fag in reference to people being weak, not being macho, basically not being straight. It's what it implies, regardless of what people say. It implies "abnormal to heterosexual society". I don't know a lot of people who will call you a fag unless you're doing something that could be construed as "gay". The connotation, no matter what you say, is that it is latently homosexual to get on a Harley with a bunch of other guys. |
