It means just as I implied...

But I'm not implicating everyone nor anyone in particular...

Heh -- just curious if DJs are getting their dues for playing parties. It costs a lot of money for an artist to play even just one night as well as a lot of time.

Though, I suppose... with the line-up as it was, it's unlikely that many of the artists would have really felt pressure to buy more tracks as I don't think anyone played more than an hour....

Nonetheless... do the DJs get paid, or are they paying out of their own pockets (not just tracks, but the time that needs to be put into it... not to mention studio gear...) ... ?

I do understand, however, that there are indeed many artists who would be happy to do such a show out of the kindness of their hearts, and who, at the same time, show proper respect to producers by buying every single track they play... but, in a scene such as that, I can't but help but think there are a lot of hacks too (hackers, thieves, false idols...)

Oh... and the iconicism of some of the performers sketches me out, too... 16 year olds are pretty vulnerable to manipulation, especially when on drugs, in the face of such colourful, over-the-top characters who present themselves as the greatest beings in the history of all great beings. Some DJs, I think, are trying to have the people believe they're God or something...

I'm actually very keen to hear some well reasoned and/or empirical arguments against these thoughts... no disrespect intended to anyone, but I strongly believe, for the health of the scene, that such concerns ought be brought to the table for the sake of better understanding...

Heh -- it was a good party. :-)

None of the DJS got paid at the party. Almost everyone was happy to come play for their friends in a two room event which only cost 5$... The money from the gate went to pay the location, the beer and the sound and to help pay back the 1000$ loss we had at the last event which was FREE. I actually prefer to do the 5$-10$ events over the FREE ones since it's not a total loss and 5$ is nothing for a two room event.

agreed / most DJs do not wanna be gods Fothergill and DO by there trax.
As for getting paid , in these type of events the promoter is busting his ass for the party ppl to get good quality underground style events.
Its the least he can ask for you to respect the venue and keep negative feedback (unless its helpfull or advise) for yourself

I don't know that my feedback was negative -- I'm raising some questions that I've asked myself countless times but have never dared ask because I knew I'd get a hostile reaction.

The thing I'm ashamed about this scene the most is that it's the drug dealers who are getting what ought to be the artist's and promoter's money.

your questions are legitimate - but maybe not in this thread. maybe start a new thread in the general discussions? it is a philosophical discussion that concerns the whole scene, not just this party...

i know what you mean though :) comes from dealing with a younger crowd that can sometimes lack professionalism. professionalism may not be what these people are looking for - thay just want to party. as i said earlier, most djs don't make money, they have jobs on the side. if you go on the bigger side of things in festivals such as eclipse, space gathering, soma, etc... djs, musicians and deco artists do get paid, that is what the ticket price is for.

but lots of young people can't afford it, they only want to party. they will eventually grow up and move on to other things, everyone does. i remember when i was younger and felt like i needed to go out every weekend, and sometimes sneaking into parties because i had not the money to pay. i didn't do it out of disrespect, but i felt i needed the parties to stay alive.

and now i give back, sometimes i do deco for free because i remember what the parties did for me. most of the material i use come from my own pockets, and sometimes other people's trash ;) but i am happy when i do get paid. you know, i would do it anyways.

for the djs using mp3s, they would never get to play in big festivals until they buy the originals. sound quality... it shows on a soundsystem that is really good. personally i can't really tell all that much but there are people who have the ears for that.

anyways. the djs playing at this one party were quite young, and they are just starting. give them time as they age and build up their own legends... we've all got to start somewhere, right? :)

exactly. because a starting dj can't mix interesting sets only with cds, because it takes time and money to build the collection.

That's the annoying part... only the bourgeois can really afford to be a professional in the field because so many amateurs are willing to do it for free, and kids who have pupils the size of quarters can't very well tell the difference between a trainwreck and a creative mix...

The art always takes a second place to the drugs, in parties like this...

... And, Namaste... most DJs ought to be able to do creative mixes with CDs... some of the most talented DJs in Montreal are still using CDJ's...

The DJ chooses the music which people hear... If he can mix well maybe he will go somewhere but you seem to forget most DJ's in the world are bedroom DJ's and it's nice to hear some of them once in a while outside on a large system. Some people like to hear 3 DJ's play 3 hour sets each for the night or even someone play a 10 hour marathon, some people like to hear a little of what many people have to offer in terms of styles. Some people are creative while mixing, others just play the music they like and other people play their own music. It's all good to me and it's me who chooses the people who play at my events. People can ask for money but I'll just get someone else to play as it's not often we have 5$ events with two rooms that are super fun... I'd like to keep the trend going for this.

There is a large world out there. If you think you can get 200$/gig then go for it. I'm not telling anyone not to. But if you want to come out with your friends to something cheap which is BYOB and all night long, chances are the DJ's are not being paid and everyone is out to have a good time.

you misunderstood what i said ;)

you can have mp3s on cd... and still look like you are mixing cds, but they are mp3s... you can be equally as creative, but the sound is not right. it is good for djs who want to practice but don't have a fortune to spend on buying every cd they want in their collection at the moment.
and playing in front of a real audience should be part of any dj's practice...

the big gigs for djs are not in the free parties. this is more like having fun with friends than anything else...

amen!

this is not the type of event you necessarily wanna get paid to play at.. everyones gives a lil to the community and gets a LOT out of it doing what they do to have some fun.

obviously some gigs are different but this is a community Thang so.. by the people for the people. ;)

in all seriousness, it's still important, for the sake of our scene, to at least try and hire DJs who know what they are doing. Too many hits to the notion of quality, including no deco, poor bathrooms, no bar, etc, will just make sure that some people never come back.
In the long run, worthwhile DJs will charge because in the real world, they will end up having better things to do then play at 4am for an hour for nothing.
I am not complaining, in fact I believe in what Noah does, which is why I accept to play no pay. But we've got to be careful, it's not 100% good to provide 'free partying', especially to really young kids who might be a tad more responsible in their choices if the real costs of life apply.
Nothing in life is free, and although I HATE that, we've got to live with it, as well as prepare our future adults for that truth. It's not hard to make a little bit of money, in fact, most of the time, making money means you're giving something to society in general, which is 100% necessary, whether you see that or not.
Money is more an idea that anything else, and in some ways, it does separate those who earn it from those who are always looking for a free ride.

Noah: I gotta say that you wouldn't get people destroying shit and causing as much damage if there was a decent door price. By eliminating the freeloaders, you're eliminating the people who don't actually give a shit about your party. I've always strongly believed that this is GREAT for the vibe. I mean, you only want people who want to be there to be there, right?
I'm feeling crazy nutso right now..
