DJs all act like dicks when they're behind the decks. and ppl act like idiots when they request songs.

i saw a shirt in a window that i need to get for mixing, it says: I'm not getting paid enough to be nice to you.
I'm feeling you up right now..

It has nothing to do with being a dick, its about maintaining your integrity

The job of the dj is play for EVERYONE, not one or two whiners

If Steve Angello had started putting on Madonna or Black Eye Peas how do you think all the people that came to see him do his thing would have felt?

People who make requests don't seem to understand that part. In reality they're merely trying to dj in your place, without the risks.

PS It is illegal to enter an establishment and try to dictate the music by the way. A dj is not required by law to play ANY requests (unless stipulated in his contract).

For example if someone shows up to my show and starts bothering me or interefering in my set, I can legally have them removed from the premises and potentially sue them for harrassment.

What a skank. I met Angello last summer when he played in Ottawa, He's actually a really AWESOME guy. Crazy for polar ice vodka too, he was downing that shit right from the bottle went through 4 26ers through the whole night. He would NOT have put his hands on her, he was waaaayyyy to respectful of EVERY person in the club here, not just the women! I wish I could get in Paris' Face, Bitch wouldn't be walking with her nose so high in the air for long.
I'm feeling deadmau5 won a juno! right now..

Betty just cause she sucked my cock don't mean she can tell me what to play ;)

I lost all respect for her after this incident, her attacking and slandering this dj for no reason, crashing the party with her requests no one wanted to hear, lying about it after.

Its completely unacceptable behavior

If I were Steve I'd sue that bitch for all she's worth

I think these people don't realize the work that goes into being a professional DJ. They think of all DJs like those one from their high school dances and wedding, you know, just playing top 40 in any random order. Its like the equivalent of people who just go to walmart and marks work wearhouse to shop for clothing, and don't understand how people can drop so much money and time looking for that perfect pair of kicks. They dont understand its an art, and a lot of work has gone into that set.

The DJ just doesnt show up and throw together a mix. They've thought about it for a while, even if they havent planned the set out. The sequence, the hardness, the quickness, the progression, the climax, et - its all thought about. Throwing in requests would totally fuck up the art. DJs have enough work changing the set on the fly in response to the crowd vibe and energy. If your friends with a DJ, you can totally tell when they have a gig coming up. They get into a zone.

Even if someone was requesting good songs...it would fuck with the set. A DJ set is art. It would be like someone requesting a miestro to play a specific song at the symphony. Even if the song was good, it would ruin the experience because the whole sequence is off.
I'm feeling apathetic right now..

i think the DJ's job is being over-glorified here... sometimes a request by a drunken twit who asks for house at a metal night or raggaton at an irish pub, is lame.

But a dj that can't fit something a little different into a set in order to please a paying customer is either incompetent, lazy, or too pretentious. you can also play remixes of similar tracks to fit something 'pas rapport' into a set...

it sucks to have to compromise sometimes, but if you're playing in a bar or club, requests are to be expected. if you're getting multiple requests, then you may be reading the crowd wrong...

and Gamos, any dj that can't throw something unexpected into his 'art', is a pretty weak artist.

i don't like requests, but i can take them, with a little good judgment, and make them work. it makes some ppl really happy and grateful.

i'm sick of every single dj thinking they have absolutely the best taste in music, 'cause sometimes they really don't. though the same goes for the ppl making the requests too... .. .

Its about context....

Unexpected Good: The crowd isnt responding all that well to the set, so the DJ switches it up on the fly

Unexpected Bad: A DJ is playing a wickid set that the crowd is eating up, and then trys to work in a request for the sake of being agreeable, and by doing makes the set worse.

If someone requests Shania Twain in the middle of ur hardcore set, whatcha gonna do? If you work it in, and it somehow makes ur set better, u will be mah hero

I'm sorry to digress but when picking an event, the first thing that I check after the price and location is the genre of the DJs and I'd be very surprised to hear something completely out of what the ad mentioned. Although you clearly mentioned club and bar, that comment seemed pretty generic.

a dj doesn't need to please one skank to get laid, he can get it anywhere else if people dig his shit

in other words fuck people who make requests, it's all about integrity

requests can be great. especially if it's something I actually do have in my crate. I try and remember what tracks certain people like and try and fit it into the set

also, sometimes promoters don't do a good job, and therefore you don't know what kind of crowd might show up at a club..

in cases like that I try to bring a back-up of old house, oldskool hip hop, funk etc - just in case.

that's saved me more than once, when I was booked to play a jungle set at a club where mostly regulars showed up - and not one of them even knew what jungle is.

and I'm flexible - if the majority of people want to hear one certain style over another, then I bring enough records so I can adapt to that

I can see if you are getting paid crazy money to play at a big club night, you gotta keep the clientele happy.. it's a job...

but if I'm DJing some small party for the love, I don't let random muppets come and tell me what I can and can't play

and I don't let em play Saxophone over my set either ;)

I do that a lot :P If there's some people I know that are showing up to the party and I know there's a track they love, I'll bring it with me and as soon as I see them come in I'll put it on.. Nothing gets you pumped up and in the mood to go nuts and dance like walking in and having your favorite tune come on 5 minutes later.

exactely,

I play all kinds of events, probably the most diverse range of events than any dj on this board

Sometimes they're more mainstream, sometimes more underground, every gig is different

But I always put a lot of time into planning a good set and try to have enough music to satisfy the majority of the people there.

As long as most people are enjoying it and the music is good, I see no need to start playing music I don't want to play. It fucks up the vibe

If you wanna be a request dj, go work on Crescent, just don't expect to get much respect for what you do.

PS : Na,, next hardcore gig you play, I'm gonna bring a couple of office girls, they're hot but they don't like hardcore cause they think its bad music. So make sure you bring "better" music that they know (ie, Rihanna, Madonna, and some more Madonna). They'll be really happy, and I'm sure your hardcore following will increase as well (for being a nice guy)
