this is almost a repost of something I wrote before, but my feelings, regardless of format are as follows :

-I always end up paying for things I believe in and love
-99% of the time I don`t or won`t pay for pop artists or commercial music
-I generally try to support local artists, independant artists and small labels before big ones

As far as the method, its 2008, debating whether or not playing cd`s or vinyl is better is so 2003, the art of dj`ing has come much further than just the medium, it has extended beyond... the whole wav Vs mp3 thing is fucking stupid people, seriously... I challenge any one person here who thinks they can tell the fucking difference to come to my studio to be blindfolded and I will play a record, a wav, a 128bit and 320bit mp3 and quiz them on which is which, and I GUARANTEE they won`t be able to tell the fucking difference.

I think dj`s and music affectionados should pay for what they love and believe in, whether they are performing or just collecting and listenning.... and if some freebies come by now and then, well sweet galaxy treat!

Ufot=music lover

I'd almost wanna take that challenge, seriously. I'll agree that the diff between a .wav and a 320kbps-encoded .mp3 is probably not noticeable, but I'm sure that 128 one will DEFINITELY sound "cheaper".
I'm feeling alive n' learned :) right now..

I gotta take this one day. I grew up listening to music on my father's stereo system, which currently is worth about $75k.. Tube monoblock amps, insane speakers, $12k CD player, all the interconnects go for $250/foot.

On Loreena McKennitt's first album (don't remember the name of it), the last track on the album was recorded in a church with a choir, and if you listen to the CD on a good soundsystem, sitting in the sweet-spot, you can close your eyes and you can hear where the sound/recording engineer is sitting in the pews, and you can count the individual members of the choir because you can hear the rustling of their robes when they move, as well as being able to tell how tall they are because you can 'hear' where their mouth is in relation to the rest.

Electronic music is never going to have the quality/resolution/spacial location that 'real', recorded music has, but there's some stuff that's absolutely mindblowing when you actually know how to listen. Most people's ears aren't 'trained' to actually listen to music/sounds, they just "hear" the music, not "listen" to the music, the ambiance, etc..

I've done a blind-test with some stuff a few times before at the stereo show that happens every year, and with a copy of Roger Waters - Amused To Death (which I have on a 24k gold CD), I can tell you which sets of speaker wire are higher quality than the other, let alone tell the difference between a 128k mp3 and a vinyl, wave, or any other format you could possibly throw out.

screwhead, me to, my father has "magnaplanar" (or wtv its spelled) speakers with a sound system worth like 10k

ufot, i can assure you i can tell the difference between a vinyl and a digital media, because the frequencies arent the same, cant really say between a wav and a 320 because most of the cutted out frequencies are below 30hz and higher than 16khz.

but you can hear a 128 kbps mp3 and 320, in fact, you can hear in the 128 kbps version the "hiss" of the compressions in the high frequency, it does sound like shit.

but im pretty sure the "normal" ear (normal people) cant.
I'm feeling hardcore right now..

i can tell the diffence between a foot of wire and an other, acoustic loss that is, to 0.0025 % margin of error.

Yeah.. I mean, I know some people have been "fooled" with stuff like that, like a site where some guy did a test with people and used a set of Monster cables, and then he hooked up the speakers with coat hangers, and they thought the coat hangers sounded better.. But when it comes down to it, Monster cables really aren't anything all that special, and I'm willing to bet that the people who he made listen to the thing are not actual audiophiles, just people who like listening to music.

monster cables are the biggest rip off ever.
the mark up on cables is retarded...
you can usually make any cable you need for under $5.

Well I know some of you guys have seriously well trained ears; my comment did refer to those of us who have less trained ears... to me its somantics past a certain point, if it sounds like shit, it sounds like shit. However, the shit scale isn`t the same for everyone and unless you are obsessed with quality at all levels, it is less important than what you are trying to communicate with your performance. Furthermore, regardless of the quality of sound you're bringing, I can count (on my two paws) the number of times I`ve played on systems well calibrated enough to be able to get that quality difference accross to an audience(show of hands who disagrees with this)... So, there are many factors in performance, and though the quality of sound is definitely one of them, making it the highest standard possible seems futile unless you are also bringing the highest quality sound system with you when you perfom.

Ufot=there are many cents, those are my 2

any mp3s below 192 sound bad on my $900 speakers and $150 headphones. On my $20 headphones and $0 speakers (built into the computer) even 96 sounds alright. So it depends on your gear. Just remember that it gets worse if you double-compress stuff.. a 192k mp3 mixed with other 192k mp3s and then encoded into a 192k mp3 of the mix will probably sound as bad as a 128k mp3 because the shitty sound artifacts are building up.

true... i heard a story lately about a club who fired their serato djs coz the boss complained about the bad sound ( no bass he said).
and i also know a tech who get called sometimes for sound problem and he resolved it with... a cd instead of a mp3 playing.
