Actually, no matter how you purchased your music, you're technically not allowed to play it out at a party, it's just that most electronic music labels don't go out of their way to enforce it.

I know for a fact though, that stuff that's played on the radio has to be licensed, and each time a song is played has to be recorded, because they have to pay the copyright owners.

The only music that's really legal to play out is stuff on free labels that fall under the ... fuck forgot the name of it, but it's like an open-source copyright thing..

Every record you buy has a warning on it that says you may not preform the music at a public event, or that you may not distribute the music in any form/format, and that's just a part of the general copyright that applies to EVERYTHING; DJing out, making free mixes available, are ALL a breach of copyright, but depending on the lable, they overlook that, as it's generally agreed that 1: you pay for the music you play out and 2: if you release a mix that has to be payed for (on CD or in any pay-to-play format) you MUST license each individual track.

what happened to the days when the labels GAVE DJs music, purposefully, so that the tunes get played in the clubs?

well, technically, the tune still falls under copyright laws and you need an actual official license on record that can be looked up to play it out, even if it was given to you.

I'm pretty sure "mixing" a song at a party is legal in all aspects, since it could be categorized under "derivative work", or under "fair use", making it not eligible against copyright infringement.

intellectual property is bullshit and is a concept that should die within years to come... seriously if you have a good idea ITS A RACE for you to be the first to produce or promote it! once the people have seen it ... it becomes a part of them and therefore they should have the right to use it or make it better (or worst sometimes) !its the perfect balance for faster evolution... if everything is secret how the fuck can we work on it as a collectivity ... LINUX is a pretty good example... its getting to the point where its easier to install linux (ubuntu) than vista :D
MASSIVE WIN! SHARE if u CARE

sorry for non french speaking people... my english is so bad that it hurts and no hablar spagnol ;)
