If your a DJ and your mixing at a party, the least you could do is buy the fucking tracks your mixing. The sound usually is much better too than some file you loaded somewhere.

Practicing at home using "fileshare", sure why not. If you like the sound of a certain track, then go guy it.

IMHO

If you get paid, pay for it. Common misconception about spinning is thinking its not a business. It takes a minimum investment (decks, mixer, tunes) to start shit up.

mp3 is a lossy format.
even 320's have compression and compression = loss of information...
get your tunes how ever you want for all i care...
but take in mind that whatever compromises you make are compromising your sound.
i'm not saying an 320 mp3 can't sound good...
in most cases it really doesn't matter
but knowing a little bit about the format you are playing can be a big advantage to you.
in most cases if you buy your tunes you can get the mastered .wav for an extra buck.
I'm feeling republican right now..

And goddam does it ever make a difference. Majority of venues have no acoustic paneling/bass traps etc, so shit formats sound even worse.

There's hardly any difference between a 320 and WAV, nobody's hearing is that fucking good, who are we kidding? But yes there is a bit of loss with the compression....but not enough for the human ear to notice in clubs etc. I always buy my Mp3's or they are given to me by the artist. Anything else given via another means is checked thoroughly to see if it's...

a) unreleased (it will usually be unmastered, if that's the case, I don't play it on mixes or out at all) b) a direct vinyl rip (most of the tunes I got from 05-07 we're all rips or under 320, they sound like absolute shit I usually throw em out) c) A fake copy (a lot of tards in Europe like listening to mixes and taking out snippets of tracks they like and cutting & pasting them together to achieve a somewhat mixable track, this usually occurs with unreleased material and the sound quality is always off). I find the quality of the DJ is reflected by the quality of the music he/she plays.

320 Original Mix or gtfo. --------->

My point of view changed over the years when I realized most DJs in this town barely get paid for their sets. Yeah right, I'm paying 14$ PER VINYL SINGLE and then if I'm lucky I'll play them at 4 gigs that'll pay me maybe 20 bucks a pop.

Legal online tracks are okay, considering their more reasonable price, but I used to have trouble finding the latest, latest shit on these types of sites.

So you're left with free illegal mp3s. Use them UNTIL THE TRACK GETS RELEASED digitally. Then buy it if you like it and spin it, for the artist's sake.

In that period when you're stuck with free mp3s, my not-vast experience tells me 192kbps is good enough for most systems. Make sure you listen to them on a decent system beforehand for quality control, some people rip 192s from other people's iPods which had them at 128kbps in the first place, so you get a second generation shitty downgrade of a downgrade. Not good.

In short, use your ears, use your common sense.
I'm feeling my balls for a tumor right now..

hmmm

the fact that there is little or no money for DJs is no excuse. this is not top-40. nobody is putting a gun to a DJ's head to make him play for free. you either agree to play for free, hammer out a fee from the promoter, or you don't take the gig. simple.

when I started buying up records I fully understood I might not get any kind of gig, ever. I was happy just to be able to play the vinyl at home...

some people have such a sense of entitlement now. not only do they want all the hottest tracks, right away, they want to be taken seriously as DJs - right away, and get paying gigs - right away

well guess what? a lot of these newcomers are just fucking around playing for their friends. zero credibility. in a couple years they'll have moved on to something else and won't even be doin it. if they are claiming they can't afford to support the artists, then they don't deserve to be taken seriously as a DJ.
go back to the woodwork

if you are playing obscure underground music, you can't expect to get a return on it. lots of people slave away in the trenches pushing a certain sound and never break even. that's how it goes

i guess that's just where the technology has taken us, but in my books, it's still not cool to play bootlegged vinyl or pirated mp3s

c'est pas fort

I always buy my mp3 that i put in mix ,or play in front of people. AS for home, like everyone i have some tracks i download in torrents.etc. It's really disrespectful for all the artist who took time to create to steal their shit. And if everyone do that ,well, they will not have more money to produce some other tracks and we'll be fucked listening to bad commercial music only .

hmmm...i have a lot of music on CD and vinyl, but i always bring a few compilation CDs i made from mp3s, 'cause a song is a song, and if the sound quality is good, i'll play the damn thing. Not going to make the dancefloor suffer 'cause i won't play a kick ass song just 'cause it's an mp3 someone DLed. On the other hand, if you don't own a lot of albums in your genre and almost only play DLed mp3s, that's a shame.

I'm still not sure about the whole artists/cash/permission issue. i have free tunes up on this site and i would not be pissed to hear one of them played at a party. Unless you trainwreck with my track :P lol... ...'m still fairly neutral about pirating for personal use, but for commercial use (like DJing at a paying gig) try to keep it to a minimum.

All in all, it's a shady practice, but there's some room for exceptions.
I'm feeling you up right now..
