 Coolness: 162705 | To me, it really depends on how you use your skills. Martial arts have a bunch of legit applications, from defending yourself to competing for sport. What I'd be against, in regards to martial arts, is exploiting people; using your skills to kick someone's ass and steal their wallet, or intimidate them into giving you things you haven't earned.
That would have everything to do with being a dumb-ass - not a martial artists. Stupid is as stupid does, and there's a sucker born every minute. Not much we can do about it. PUA tricks are like con-artist skills. Yeah, they're a skill, but their only use is to trick others into giving them something that they wouldn't be able to get. I'm very much against manipulation and lying, and hate disshonest people with a passion.
Once again - stupid people do stupid shit. People, especially girls, quickly develop and build defenses as a protection mechanism when they get approached by strangers in a social setting. The same kind of mechanism that makes you ask everyone you meet how's it going, without even listening to their replies. You've just been drilled into doing it over and over again. The skills of a PUA are about disarming these mechanism in order to get to the core of a person's values and personality in the shortest time possible. It's about creating new opportunities to meet and get to know people, building rapport with them, without being hindered by conditioned social routines. |

The reality is, they're called PICK UP ARTISTS, much like con artists. You're using tricks to get around defenses that people have put up specifically to keep people like you out. Those tricks aren't about learning about people, about making new friends, it's about getting someone interested in you that wouldn't normaly be. If you can't get a girl interested in you for who YOU are, rather than for what tricks you've learned and memorized, then you shouldn't be talking to her. |

I agree, I hate the term pick up artist, but hey, it's a label we've been tagged with so now we gotta deal with it. Avoid having people like me kept out? What's a person like me? People reject people based only on assumptions and judgments, nothing fair here. And it's nothing against me either - they don't know me. You can't sell something to someone who doesn't need it - nor can you create attraction in someone who's not interested. But of course you can create interest if you know how to do it properly - and when you get around to it you realize that once given a fair chance, most people are fucking interesting to be around wit. Once again, it's about giving yourself a chance, and an opportunity to get rid of the bullshit and masks people wear in social gatherings, and give way to a more authentic relationship. The same principles can just as easily be applied to salesmanship, showbiz or yes, even making friends. The tricks and routines you're talking about are just that - tricks and routines. Just like any martial artist would be entirely fucked if he were to rely on his katas or whatever you call them to survive. What matters is the mechanics and understanding behind these simple gestures - and their mastery. |

I never knew a guy like that (that worked so hard on his "talent" to pick up girl) who wanted to have a real relationship with the girls he meets in bars... Fucking, then leaving before she wakes up... that's all that matters... And there is a lot of girl like that too! Not saying is a bad thing, but you have to realize you WILL HURT a lot of people in the process of boosting your self-esteem and being cool in front of your friends. (which is most of the time also the goal, that and all the sex!) |
