Meh, even torrent hashes tell your ISP pretty much everything you're downloading, and then I suppose they'll tell the RCMP everything they want to know if they're subpoenaed for the info...

Harsh.

yup. I mean, it's not the ideal way of doing it (and fairly limited) but Imageshack has a torrent downloading service.

And really, all that needs to be done is to have new software fully encrypt everything, and they won't be able to know what's being downloaded.

Ahem ..... yeah .... prostitution .... and quite a lot of other things ...
they're particularly crazy about drug control (pot = 10 year sentence) ...

Most of the time, you can easily find some gimmick or buy your way out of any situation as the legal system is built only as a mean to blackmail people and serve corruption, but if you piss the wrong people, you're shit out of luck ...

What the article fails to mention is that file providers can be fined up to 20 000$, the client can be fined 500$. If they can prove that you have been using software to get around the digital locks you are fucked. If you are caught with unlocked music of video on your comp. or ipod, you can be fined.

...thanks to a fuckin' minority conservative government.
Update » databoy wrote on Thu Jun 12, 2008 @ 5:16pm
They probably wont have to go after everyone, just shut down a few providers with harsh fines and the rest will follow.

The thing is, Canada didnt really have a law about downloading (not effective anyway). If this law passes, it will.

Yeah, thing is, it's not the kinda law the liberals will be against just to contradict (and annoy) the conservatives.

I'll try and keep up with this one. Thanks databoy!

Yeah, this " adjustement " on the law is shit.

So they'll start fining everyone who downloads illegally ? That's like saying you'll give a ticket to ANYONE WHO JAYWALKS. Hey, it's illegal but who's getting a ticket for that these days.

As for the Conservatives...who the fuck thought it was a good idea to elect a party called " CONSERVATIVE " ? Isn't that, like, the OPPOSITE of " open-minded " ?

I thought so.

I still think it'll be pretty impossible to tell who's downloading what. All you have to do is encrypt your trafic. What are they going to do, send cops/rcmp to everyone's house, confiscate their computers, and go through every file they have to make sure it's legit? It's a waste of time and money.
I'm feeling airconditioned bliss right now..
