well from what I've heard from people the Pioneer 400s aren't the best, and occasionaly fuck up and the equipment needs a hard reset for them to start working again.. You'd be much better off with the 800s for not that much more money.

honestly.. Id go with the gear you'll be encountering most in events.. that way you'll be fluent on it. sofar the cdj's I've encountered most often and always have the best time mixing on are the cdj 800's and a djm 500, 600 or 800 mixer. It doesn't really matter how good you are in your bedroom or what gear you have at home.. if you cant translate for the dancefloor, your screwed anyway.
I'm feeling hr, br, fr, sr right now..

Thats true, i have used 100s,200,400s, and 800s. i like them all.

djm400 i seen at a party and used it.. went pretty well.

so what should i buy?

the 800's for 200$ more?

and upgrade the mixer?

are you buying all this gear used or new?
cuz arent the 400s like 900$US ea. and decent turntables a min of 600$ ea.?!

cuz and as harsh as it may sound, i REALLY know how a 16 y/o DJ could ever afford all this

well for spinning psytrance, you can use pretty much anything that'll show you a beat counter, you don't actually need any beatmatching skills as long as you remember that with psytrance 0.7% = 1bpm, so it's pretty much just 'listen to the tune.. is it too fast? bring it down 0.7.. still too fast, down 0.7 more.. still just a little too fast, 0.7 more.. there we go, it's beatmatched'

You can do it with the 800s also since they display the pitch, too. The jog wheel is a hell of a lot better/more responsive on the 800s, and they're a lot closer to cueing with vinyl, which is WAY better than the lower modles where cueing sounds like your CD is skipping and you have to figgure out where the best spot is..

And like I said, the 400s will occasionaly crash on you, especially when you're playing MP3s. You'd be a lot better off with the 800s in the longrun; they make some with MP3 playback if you're really hard up on CDs to burn stuff, and all the extra effects are pretty much useless; most parties you're going to play at are gonna have 100s or 800s, which don't have effects, so if you get used to mixing with effects, you're gonna realise rather quickly that relying on a gimmick is no substitute for actually knowing what to do.

If she's gotten rich and you're not worried about a budget, then get yourself the 1000s, those are like the holy grail of CDJs.

well, you should really think about the 800s then. The ones with MP3 playback are cheaper than the 400s, and like I'd said before, the cueing system on the 100/200/400 is, IMO, total ass. The 800/1000 work like using a real record; you move the platter and you can hear the sound play as if you were moving a record, so you're not listening to an 0.2 second loop and trying to figgure out if you're at the spot you want to cue.

Also, when it comes to the jog wheel, the 100/200/400 all work about the same way: when you spin the wheel to speed it up, it's pretty limited; it's like you're just putting the pitch up to 0.5% faster and when you stop spinning it it goes back to what you have it set to. No matter how fast you spin the wheel, it'll never go faster/slower than 0.5%. With the 800/1000, if you just push it up slowly you get it up slowly, if you spin it faster it goes faster.. if you find another spot in the track that you want to cue from instead, you can do like a record and just pull it back to that spot and hold the cue button, rather than hit pause, get the little skipping loop, rotate it back, guess if you're at the right spot or not.. set the cue, play... you're too early, pause, bring it back, change the spot, guess where you are... now you're too late.. etc..

The effects are pretty much useless, 'cause like I said, 99% of the time, you're not gonna be playing out on those types, as they're not the "standard" CJDs.. the standards are the 100, 800 and 1000s. The effects are useless for anything other than just messing around at home, and 90% of the time you aren't going to be using them. And if you look at it, the 400s are really just 200s with effects; do you want to waste all that extra money on something you're not going to use and that handles counterintuitively?
I'm feeling the no pussy blues right now..
