All major religions that preach "hellfire" also preach exclusivity. So, the problem becomes _which_ god is supposed to be the correct one to _bet_ on. Also, There's no way to know if the risk is the _other_ way, that all people who believe without reason will experience the greatest suffering. Imagine a millennia-long intelligence test. God purposely set us up with ZERO evidence of his existence, got some flunkies to write a few Good Books and seed them around the planet, and then waited to see who would take the bait. Anyone that falls for a religion (any religion) is immediately sent to Hell because obviously they are mental defectives who are too stupid to go by the facts. Maybe it's the non-belivers, the ones who saw through the scam all along, and suffered horribly down the ages at the hands of the True Believers (remember, if you want to go to the Good Place you have to suffer while you're on Earth) who will (to their great and everlasting surprise) be admitted to Heaven. At which point, the Atheists will be believers because, well ... now they'll have some evidence, and they'll be able to believe in God without having to take it on "faith".

So this leads to Pascal's Wager , i.e. it's a safe bet to believe in a "general god" because there's no risk, and a lot to lose. But, if you don't believe in exclusivity, then there's no reason to believe in hell, either. I mean, why is it the most religious countries get hit with major earthquakes, flooding and tsunamis? Because they are being punished for workshipping the wrong god. Or, worshiping the right god in the wrong way. If there's one thing that god hates most it's betrayal. So, mayber everyone who worships a god goes to the severest depths of hell. Hence, maybe safest option is not believing, as the punishment is less severe.

Finally, if God is everywhere and infinite, that means that he includes everything. Ergo, if evil exists then it too must be part of God. This requires one of three conclusions, (a) God is not all good, (b) God is not infinite, or (c) evil doesn't exist.

Evil doesn't exist. There is on the one hand, the beautification of Life and on the other, its destruction.

Atheist's Wager

A specific argument challenging the assumption that belief is rewarded is known as the Atheist's Wager. While Pascal suggested that it is better to take the chance of believing in a god that might not exist rather than to risk losing infinite happiness by disbelieving in a god that does, the Atheist's Wager suggests that:

You should live your life and try to make the world a better place for your being in it, whether or not you believe in God. If there is no God, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent God, he may judge you on your merits coupled with your commitments, and not just on whether or not you believed in him.

Evil doesn't exist, it's just a concept we've invented to have rules and to be able to live in society.

Simple thoughts on religion:

You can SEE the sun. It makes you warm and and is responsible for what we eat. Also, it feels nice.

I've never seen Jesus, not even in a tortilla. He doesn't bring me food or make me feel nice (although I am sure that some priests would like to try on his behalf).

Where is the competition exactly?

If I HAD to choose a religion, besides sun worship of course, it would HAVE to be The Hare Krishna mantra. Those guys can carry a tune and some of the girls are cute. Seems like a nice life really.

Aaron

Edit:

I just read this: "Most serious 'Hare Krishna' practitioners live according to strict rules. For example, initiates take vows to abstain from all forms of recreational drugs and intoxicants (including caffeine), from eating meat, fish and eggs, from gambling, and from all sexual relations except for purposes of procreation within marriage. For non-initiates how many of these rules to follow is left to one's own discretion, but these four 'regulative principles' remain as a standard."

Fuck that.

It's just thinking globally, not only about humans.
For other species, the concept of good and evil might be very different.

Scholar 1: Since Atlas is holding up the world, what is he standing on?
Scholar 2: A turtle.

Scholar 1: And what is the turtle standing on?
Scholar 2: Another turtle.

Scholar 1: Oh, I see.
Scholar 2: It’s turtles all the way down!

According to The Encyclopedia Frobozzica of Zork fame, Quendor (aka the Great Underground Empire) rests on the shoulders of a giant Brogmoid. Quendor is flat, and is hence held up on sort of a disk with grooves and ridges on it which form all the tectonic surfaces of the world. The giant Brogmoid is supposedly standing on another disc-shaped world, also supported by an even larger Brogmoid. A smaller Brogmoid holds up a disc-shaped world above Quendor, as evidenced by the discovery in 883 GUE of its feet in the higher altitudes of Mount Foobia.

I figure this is my chance to find out if anybody on here is old enough to have played Zork Zero or for that matter the original Zorks I-III, Beyond Zork, and the Enchanter series. Oh and nerdy enough, but that goes without saying.

A series of books by Terry Pratchett. Funniest thing ever :D

You have four major "arcs", through a few dozen books:

-Rincewind, the mage without spells or courage (which parodies Conan-esque books)
-The three witches, which parodies Disney/Grimm Tales
-Men at Arms, which parodies Columbo/Police Academy
-Death, which is, well, the life of Death and his niece.

You have a few random single issues as well. It's like Douglas Adams stuff (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) but medieval.
