A Nation Of Immigrants

Twenty percent of people living in Canada are foreign-born, a proportion second in the world only to Australia, new census data has revealed.
The 2006 census counted more than 6m foreign-born people out of Canada's population of 31.2m, the highest ratio of immigrants since the 1930s.

The immigrant population grew four times as fast as the Canadian-born population between 2001-2006.

Nearly 60% of the newcomers came from Asia and the Middle East.

Growth

The new data illustrates that Canada is experiencing another great wave of immigration-led population growth.

Canada's statistics office, Statistics Canada, has previously reported that Canada experienced the highest population growth rate of the Group of Eight industrialised countries from 2001 to 2006.

But unlike the great waves of migrants from Britain and Europe in the early- and mid-20th Century, this time non-Europeans are in the majority.

In 1971, Europeans accounted for 61.6% of immigrants, while in 2006 they accounted for 16.1% of recent immigrants - the second-largest group.

Combined with declining birth rates, the census data points to significant ethnic and cultural changes as Canada looks due to become reliant on immigration for population growth by around 2030.

People speaking neither French nor English as their native language now make up 20% of the total population, the highest recorded in the recent past.

Chinese languages are now the third most commonly spoken, followed by Italian, German, Punjabi, Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog and Portuguese.

The three largest cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver continue to attract the bulk of new immigrants, at nearly 70%.

I believe a lot of the problems in France are due to a wide-open immigration policy toward former French colonies without the infrastructure or tolerance to properly integrate the immigrants into French society. Unfortunately they can't go back in the past and fix that mistake, but it should be a lesson for others. Generally the countries with the highest standard of living are the ones which are the hardest to immigrate into (Scandinavian countries, Japan, etc..), all of which have very homogeneous populations. It is sad but I really believe that unless immigrants completely integrate into society, abandoning some of their original culture and customs (as many of our ancestors did), that we really can't get along.

Everyone needs to mix together, eliminate aesthetic differences in humans and cultural differences; have a united culture. Then we have to go into space. Otherwise the human race is fucked. Religion needs to be tossed out the window too. 1000 year old+ religions have NO PLACE in modern society.

There's no reason why you can't get along with religious people or poeple who follow traditions of their ancestors. If you can't get along with those people that's a choice you make. Stop making everythign about superficial differences. This has nothing to do with religion and neither does the israeli/palestine conflict. When did this become about their customs and culture? Their customs and culture are probably french like all the other french people who aren't black. People have whatever space in society that you allow them.

Also I think the world would be boring if we were all assimilated into one culture, there'd be nowhere to run from our society. Why don't we just ban colours? Maybe all music styles should just blend into one music style so that we can all get along.
I'm feeling bored right now..

Has anyone ever actually met someone like that? Has anyone actually ever heard of a religion which teaches that? It's called propaganda.

moondancer, im sorry but yes, and the imigrants DO want to change our religion in society, right now, there are musliom people that want to ban christmas trees from commercial center because it represents the christianity, (which btw, christmas trees doent have a shit to do with christianity, its a old symbol or paean beliefs, about the sun god. they used to put candles in pines because they didnt loose their "leaves" (a sing of the sun being strong in these trees, wich would resist the evil cold, night), same for the christmas log) they want this removed, and want their religion sings to replace that ...

Islam teaches that those who follow islam are destined to and therefor conversion is useless. It also teaches that christians and jews have exactly the same god and by following those relgions, it's the same as beign muslim. Which is why as invaders muslims always offered free worship. The teaching of islam as pertaining to other relgions is to accept them. Making anything you say about a few crazy bastards useless since they aren't following the religios teachings. It's hilarious to watch people fretting over problems that either don't exist or which doN't have any places in the poeple's lives who are talkign about them to begin with. When muslims start banging at your door handing you pamphlets, let me know. Until then you're eating air. Or should I say propaganda. What's even more hillarious is hearing it from poeple who's ancestors killed anyone who didn't follow their relgion and who either think this didn't count or that muslims did the same.
I'm feeling bored right now..

Exactly, it's only a minority of muslim who are extremists. And they shouldn't be called "muslims" anyways, because what they do have nothing to do with the values of Islam.
But media keeps talking about those few, so we start believing all muslims are like that.
Most of them live their faith in private though, and don't impose their religion on others.
I'm feeling x__x right now..

We are actually more tolerant than some Muslim-majority countries towards religious muslims!. In Turkey, you can't wear religious attire in public buildings (school, government, etc..) and they are a 99% Muslim country. It's funny that they got separation of church and state right but we can't.

That must be why there's civil war between two sects of Muslims in Iraq.

that, and and being stoked by al queda, the conflict in iraq between shia and sunni is not about religion, it's about control over oil resources of which the sunnis have very little...

and scott, what the fuck are you talking about...no seperation of church and state? where exactly in canada is this?

i'm so tired of hearing about tolerance from you...
you are one the most intolerant people i have ever met in my life, you don't really know anything about other cultures cause you have never been anywhere but canada and the US,

you speak one language (badly...)

i'm also gonna say pretty confidently that you've never been in a mosque (have you?) or read the koran,

Before you make one more comment about islam you go to friday prayers and you go read the koran cover to cover, otherwise your opinion is pretty worthless.

The Koran looks like the Bible, not much differences between both. Teaches mostly the same things too.
