Really? you are basing your statements on what data ? or are you just inferring?
There is a lot of Americans ( esp. adolescents ) who never heard of Facebook.
Orkut is popular in Asia and Latin America. I never hear of it before.

just because it is popular here doesn't mean it's popular everywhere else.

I have a 19 year old friend who claims to be too young for Facebook... I can understand what she means.
I'm feeling exhausted right now..

Hey Trey
I got my data from ComScore Media Matrix
Its the industry standard in Canada. Advertising buyers use it to plan online advertising strategies.

Their data seems do differ quite a bit from what you got.

Total Unique visitors Aug 2006 Aug 2007
Myspace
Facebook 47313387

Oh, I get it......every time I hit TAB it basically submits what I have written.

so last year aug 2006
Facebook had 473,000 and
Myspace had 4,351,000

this year aug 2007
Facebook has 13,841,000
Myspace has 4,615,000

I guess the difference is due to the fact that my source is for Canada and Nielsen must be International...

nelboy, a tool I think has a lot of potential, though still a number of bugs and short commings for music promotion is reverbnation... I understand what you mean though, between posting gigs or music updates on facebook/myspace, it can take a lot of time...

Also, I agree dave, if someone came up with a shareware app that functionned like trillian for personal pages so you could multiple login and update and blog, would be tres awesome... i think its a coding issue though, since each site is proprietory and coded differently.... like the issue of spaming friends through lists, a lot of sites offer address book harvesting, but most of them differ in support or function, meaning the most reliable is still having a notepad with a long and boring list of email addys seperated by semi-colons...

Ufot-may the futur be bright and clean

yup, definitely, at time of writing, facebook is less invasive than myspace, although that could all change overnight... I'm talking about the number of advertisments myspace carries versus facebook... i'm talking about macy's hacking into everyone's account, i'm talking about people who don't know you or give a fuck about you requesting your cyber friendship... tell me, how is facebook more invasive in that respect??
I'm feeling pensive right now..

The cost of (anti-)social networks: Identity, agency and neo-luddites, by Ryan Bigge

Abstract : The media coverage and resultant discourse surrounding social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Friendster contain narratives of inevitability and technological determinism that require careful explication. Borrowing a tactic from the Russian Futurists, this paper attempts to make strange (that is, to defamiliarize) social network sites and their associated discourses by drawing upon an eclectic but interrelated set of metaphors and theoretical approaches, including: the digital enclosure, network sociality, socio-technical capital and Steven Jones’s recent examination of neo-Luddites. Whenever appropriate, this paper will integrate relevant magazine and newspaper journalism about social networking sites.

A Garden of Clicks and Cliques
Enforced Volunteerism
Conclusion

entire article can be found here : [ www.firstmonday.org ]

..'basically, bigge argues that use of social networking sites can actually be seen as unpaid work. in using such facebook et al, we’re essentially producing a stream of self-surveillance that can be monitored, repackaged and sold. for example, taken collectively, we’re voluntarily producing huge databases of our preferences that are a marketers dream (think recommendations on [ amazon.com ] - customers who bought this also liked…) its the darker side of web 2.0’s utopian wisdom of crowds that created wikipedia. but also more broadly, the entire value of facebook is entirely in its users and the networks they’ve created, without any financial compensation. writing in the same vein as bigge, fred scharmen notes that even on flickr, the users are creating all the content that drives visits to the site, which in turn provides the eyeballs that can be sold to advertisers. did you know myspace also claims ownership of its user’s profiles? so even your online identity is commodifiable content.'... I like each site for different reasons.

Myspace: i like how you can set up a page easily, and have people from all over the world access your music

Facebook: fun to see how old friends are doing and updates n pics and whatnot.

thats all i have to say for now
