Squaring the circle

Squaring the circle is a problem proposed by ancient geometers. It is the challenge to construct a square with the same area as a given circle by using only a finite number of steps with compass and straightedge. More abstractly and more precisely, it may be taken to ask whether specified axioms of Euclidean geometry concerning the existence of lines and circles entail the existence of such a square.

In 1882, the task was proven to be impossible, as a consequence of the fact that pi (π) is transcendental, not algebraic; that is, it is not the root of any polynomial with rational coefficients. It had been known for some decades before then that if π were transcendental then the construction would be impossible, but that π is transcendental was not proven until 1882. Approximate squaring to any given non-perfect accuracy, on the other hand, is possible in a finite number of steps, as a consequence of the fact that there are rational numbers arbitrarily close to π.

Solved as impossible,
Exactly.

Clearly you are the superior of us, because I MOST certainly can not.

This is the most laughable thing you've said all day.

NOTHING can be measured to an infinite decimal.. infinity is an abstraction.

What this problem comes down to is solving for pi. You're asking someone to give a complete definition of an irrational number. Such a number will return an infinite number of decimal points (theoretically).

Why not ask someone to measure the exact width of the universe while you're at it.

In the end this 'problem' proves nothing you've been arguing today.

Nice to see you back your statements up. I at least gave an explanation as to why it's laughable.

You said clearly you could measure a heptagon's angles with a protractor and then said I was laughable because I said it was impossible

And logically I must prove the "fact that the world is logical" wrong?

The burden of proof is on you to prove that it is a fact, I do not say the world is illogic and that logic is useless. I say where is the proof that makes it a fact that the world is logical.
I have nothing to prove and I await enlightenment as to who proved that existence is rational and read that proof.
Update » aLxzRed wrote on Wed Apr 25, 2007 @ 12:47pm
A fact is something that is the case. A "fact" can be defined as the state of affairs reported by a true statement[1][2]; or as a concept or statement that can be demonstrated as true according to the rules of logic or some other formal decision procedure.[3] Generally, the term "fact" is distinguishable from the terms "proposition", "claim", "averment", and "allegation" in that the latter terms (and their synonyms) suggest statements that are not necessarily demonstrably true. - wiki

So the burden of proof is on you to prove the "fact" that the universe is rational.
Without proof it is not a fact.

I claim the universe is not all logical, you state as a fact that it is
I have nothing to prove...

Do I really have to crack out a protractor, take a 7 sided figure and show you the measurements I've taken?

No, clearly you'll say "that's not recorded to infinite precision!" which is retarded since it's a shape with 7 sides, you cannot evenly divide 7 using whole numbers, nor can you get a precise measurement without estimation.

Your point is wholeheartedly moot. Next you're going to say I can't count to 2 since I didn't dictate every decimal point in between 1 and 2.

Why don't you go have an argument with a tree or something, I'm sure it'll give back as much as you've given me in this conversation.
I'm feeling you up right now..

So you don't have any proof yet you state that it is a fact that the world is rational, and claim that I'm not being logical?
But if everything is logical, then we both must be...logical?
Maybe one day you'll understand, until then, I'm the illogical one ;)
I'm gonna go talk to a tree now, at least the tree won't claim it's a fact that every thing's provable only to not prove it.
I'm feeling mont-realized right now..

This entire conversation is funny. The use of impossible math problems only proves logic, all it indicates is we lack the knowledge to understand it yet. We've had many unsolveable math problems that as we learn more have been solved through logic, the very act of having an argument or a discussion requires the use of logic.
I'm feeling tired right now..

You know trees are fractal-made right? ;)

Funny how a nonsense thread became all filled with drama...
I'm guessing that's what happens with religious subjects, people take that way too seriously...

What if the whole universe was a joke and made no sense at all?
We find things that seem to make sense, laws that explain such or such phenomenons..
But at the end: it means nothing!
*brlrlrlrlm tsssh!*
Gods must be laughing their pi-shaped heads off

N'ah, science is fun, you can explain lots of things with it.
But I doubt we'll ever grasp the whole thing, understand the whole universe.
I mean, we can't even know what an electron looks like (because if you try to look at it, it alters its state)
And we have no means to know if there are other universes beside ours.

We can still try though, it's fun to play with logic.
Some theories are very cool (like string theory ^__^)
But they remain theories until proven.

Erm.. scientific theories don't get upgraded once "proven" they remain classified as "theories".

One of the biggest misconceptions of scientific theories.

A Scientific Law describes a phenomena.
A Scientific Theory Explains a phenomena.

Clearly an explanation will always come back to that big pie in the sky question of what created/causes it all, but that's just one larger theory like the Big Bang..

The reason people like the idea of god(s) is that it's easy. You don't need to spend an eternity trying to figure out what caused the universe, instead you just assume a big magical guy did it; and he loves you to boot.
