People, people.

1) Christmas zombie idea: read The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore. It's exactly that, complete with a zombie Santa and a talking fruitbat.
2) Rave zombies? Overly done. House of the Dead hinted at it and Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave to the Grave is exactly that.

First rule of screen writing: Be original.
second rule of screen writing: Don't adapt what you don't own the rights to.

Rules are meant to be broken.

Raves are already illegal, so how many time and how much should we spend to dress and dance like zombie and film the scene, 'cause another guy include that in his movie ??
I'm feeling sucré right now..

Bah ... maybe in the manuals it says to be original, but in reality, to have success, the easiest way is always to copie that original guy and just improve what he did ! And having the same idea as somebody else, when it's so vague, can hardly colide with any copyright !
I'm feeling plain happy right now..

It's called, ripping off.

If the first rule is NOT violated, then go for it.

Even though a lot of people claim 28 Days Later ripped off George Romero's stuff among other things, they made it different enough to be appreciated.

But if you're doing the exact premise of a movie, people won't want to see it. They'll hate you. If I made a movie about a man living in a fantasy world, controlled by a higher intelligence... and that man finds himself to be their savior, I'd be ripping off the Matrix. And well, Dark City. And so on.

And if you haven't made it "vague" enough, be ready to lose all your cash in a legal battle, unless your movie is a non-profit one.

But who would spend thousands on a non-profit movie?

True enough. I'm not going to pretend that it's not true. The studio execs know what they want and you have to give them that and only that, UNLESS you convince them that your idea will make them more money. And you can't do that by simply ripping off another movie.

There ARE ground rules and obvious points that MUST be in any type of movie. As long as the WHOLE premise is not ripped off.

I could make an Aliens movie set in the Renaissance, complete with an alien foetus and whatnot. I couldn't make one in space. I could make a movie about a man who has a double personality that rushes him to be someone fiercer. Like Dr.Jekyll and Mister Hyde, or Fight Club (you can see how Palahniuk took the story and twisted it) but not set in the Victorian Era or where the protagonist is an office worker turned misfit vigilante.

Unless, of course, I own the rights to the story.

You haven't seen Night of the Comet, have you? 28 Days Later is almost a direct ripoff of that. The pacing and story progression go EXACTLY the same as 28DL.

Instead of a disease, it's radiation from a comet that passes that either turns people to dust or into flesh-crazed maniacs, the main characters wake up to an empty world and don't know what's going on.. There's a shopping scene, and the end of the movie has them getting "rescued" by military researchers who turn out to be dying of the comets radiation that want to use them for something (can't remember what exactly, been a while since I've seen it)

If anyone wants to do anything, it's gotta be pretty original or no one will like it, but it's also got to be well done. House of the Dead and RotLD5 were absolutely horrible, and it'll take a lot to make a "good" rave-zombie movie without ripping them off while actually being good. There's even a new Jeckyl and Hyde movie set in the modern day where the changing drug is a derivative of extacy. Raves and horror movies just don't work, unless it's for a short scene like the intro to the first Blade movie.

So far the idea I like the most is that one with the families trapped and running out of food and turning to cannibalism, I don't think anything like that's been done before in anything other than post-apocalyptic movies with roving bands of cannibal mutants.

I say (and I'm shooting myself in the foot, since one of my upcoming scripts deal with exactly that), we have to use our own resources. What do we have in huge quantities that might make a zombie movie original?

Snow, and lots of it. Zombies will act differently to snow and cold. So will humans, trying to survive without electricity. Use that because it hasn't been used enough.

Screwhead, I haven't seen Night of the Comet but it's not the first time I see you mention it. I'll try to find it.

As for the rave scene... it's so often badly-represented in movies that people tend to laugh it off as soon as they hear of it.

There are three types of movie-goers. The "will see anything", the "art snub" and the "indies".

The "Will See Anything"s will give you the most money in theaters but require the same crap over and over again.
The "Art Snub" require originality and sophistication. They give you the least money but the most publicity if they like you.
The "Indies" are the cult followers; the die-hard fans. They require a fucking lot from you but in the end, spend the most money on your DVD and related sales. They give enough publicity.

The goal is to please all of those people. It's possible.

gosh, I started this thread out as a, "lets find someone with a camera and make blood out of food dye, glucose and corn sirup" type of thing... no plans of selling or making this movie in any way commercially viable

as for the fact that my idea had already been made... I had no idea, i just spewed that out randomly

Rawali, I know. I got caught up in the ripoff-ing thing. Worst part of making indie movies is when people accuse you of ripping off bigger budget movies.

As for marketting the movie, you should! Lest we forget, we have access to the biggest cult/indie movie festival in the world: Fantasia. They take in movies all the time. Look what it's done to Shaun of the Dead...
