at the end of your party after all the sex and drugs you can handle after your shower and just before you go to bed what you need to do is pop about 4 capsules of the herbal supplement 5HTP this is the best thing for Serotonin regeneration through your sleep cycle, it will help ease the switch from way up to way down and is great for stopping the teeth grind and cheek chew while your asleep, it's been a regular thing for most of the ravers in Toronto, I don't know if it's used on your side of the map or if it's even available where you are but I strongly recomend it to all of you who do E or ever plan to try it

That NIMH study was so seariously flawed that it's practically a joke. The study had no fucking control group, and the people doing the research were so ridiculously un-qualified it's beyond funny. The results are also completely fucking ridiculous. Also this so called group of habitual ecstacy users were in no way representative of actual ecstacy users. They basically got a group of people together, and asked them if they have used mdma in the past. There were no questions asked about other drug useage at all either. There is no way to prove that there condition was in any way caused by ecstacy. and there were no measures taken to ensure that any information given to the researches was true/accurate at all.

Oh and btw, the studies that showed ecstacy can cause "holes in your brain" and irreperable nerve damage were completely dismissed. The researchers accidentaly ordered methamphetamine instead of ecstacy. They then proceeded to administer the methamphetamine at ecstacy dosages... which are somewhere around 5 times more then the average dose of methamphetamine.

It's nice to know your source.

moondancer=buys into all the government's propaganda about E. they are exaggerating their claims by scare tactics. all those studies funded by government grant's are, as "DMTio" said, seriously flawed. You shouldn't claim to be such an expert when you really just let the government spoonfeed you inaccurate information--did it EVER occur to you that the government has an interest in deceiving you about drugs so usage goes down?

If you kids want real facts on Ecstasy, go to [ www.thedea.org ] (note that this is NOT the Drug Enforcement Administration's website)--I like it better than Erowid. He sums up the controversy about neurotoxicity very well, to paraphrase: doing one pill a month is not going to harm your brain. The wage your brain gets fucked up is when you take more than 3 pills a night and dance in a hot environment where your body temperature can get very high. He also promotes healthy consumption -- one or two pills a night at a rave or at a friend's house.

It's really useless to use more than one or two pills, anyway, unless you're going on binges where one or two pills won't do anything after you've popped pills for days. My friend did E for a 5 whole days and four pills did nothing by the 5th day. That's because she'd depleted all of her serotonin. Now, all of it will come back in a month, but since she depleted so much, she crashed really hard after that binge. It's stupid and irresponsible because all the research on Ecstasy is *not* in yet... there have only been studies done for 15 years.

It's kinda sad to see the amount of ravers who know little to nothing (or know wrong info) about drugs, when they use them a lot. Go to [ www.erowid.org ] and look at all the info! Just say KNOW.
I'm feeling witty and gay right now..

It is true that there is much more research to be done on MDMA and neurotoxicity. I have read the article on erowid ( [ www.erowid.org ] ) and it goes through, very thoroughly, all the research that had been done when the article was written, and the results are not conclusive. One thing I do remember quite clearly is that they found that at very high doses, and with very long-term use (constantly for a few days), there was dramatic damage to the serotonin neurons (decreases in the number of terminal buttons and branches from a neuron, etc.). I can't remember all the specs, but I think the doses they were using were like 5 or 10 times the average dose a human would take. I've basically come away from this with a safer feeling that if I keep my quantity and frequency of doses in moderation, that the potential for neurological damage is relatively low.

Before I had done this research, my personal observations were that I had met many people who had been doing drugs for quite a few years (5 - 10 years) and some of them seemed to be perfectly fine, whereas others were noticeably sketchy all the time. Although there are definitely differnces in how our bodies react to different chemicals, I wouldn't be surprised to find that the people who are perma-sketched went way over-board with their drugs. In my experience, the sketchiest drug is meth, and in particular, meth mixed with ecstasy. I find after doing MDMA with meth or speed that I have great trouble talking or thinking, I feel strongly dissociated from my surroundings, my jaw, teeth, tongue, and mouth are all sore from grinding and clenching all night, and I feel like shit. When I stay away from meth and speed, I'm quite fine when I come down, aside from a general feeling of a lack of motivation or desire to move or do anything. This I find is linked to the depressed levels of serotonin, which can be recovered with 5-HTP, which is a serotonin (5-HT) precursos (it gets turned into serotonin in your brain). I believe 5-HTP takes 6 or 7 hours to metabolize, so it's best to do it before you drop. It will, howerever, still work if you take it later, and considering it can take days or weeks to replenish your serotonin levels naturally, it's better to take it late than never.

Some people do a big serotonin prep for a few days up to a party, taking varying amounts of 5-HTP to boost their serotonin levels so when they do MDMA there is more serotonin to be released. Some claim it works, others say it doesn't. I think there are limits to how much serotonin we can have stored in our brains, how quickly 5-HTP is converted into 5-HT (serotonin) (i.e. you can take a million tabs of 5-HTP, and your body is still only going to process a maximal amount in a certain period of time). One thing I think people tend to forget is that there IS a limited amount of serotonin to be used, and once it's used, it's used, and you can take as much MDMA as you want, and you're not going to get considerably higher (although you might cause damage to your brain).

Another thing is that every pill of "ecstasy" is different, and even if you have a kit to test for the presence of specific drugs, you can't test for strength (or quantity) without a lab (as far as I know). Therefore, one tab of high-potency E could be equivalent to 2 or 3 tabs of low-potency E. If you don't know what the potency is, start with a quarter, or a half, and move up till you're at the place you would like to be (wihtout being so high that you're awareness of your personal safety has been put in jeopardy because you're so high you don't notice that you're overheating and could suffer from heat-stroke, have a heart attack, and possibly die).

In sum, there is some research that supports the idea that in moderation there may not be any neurotoxicological damage. Much more research is needed, however, to have a full picture of what the long term effects of MDMA use might be. If you're messing around with things you aren't knowledgeable about, you might fuck yourself over. There are relatively more responsible ways to use drugs, and self-education is one of the best things you can do for decreasing your risks of personal harm.
