You noticed it too.

People stay outside to smoke and some won't even come in ! And in some cases they will stay outside after having paid a cover. It's like the title says : the party is on the sidewalk !

Their smoking or non-smoking friends join them because they don't want to be left alone in the club or rave. The smoking ban is affecting club dynamics more than I thought.

Last friday ( and the friday before that ) at the blue dog if you were there you could clearly see it. Same thing happening at Blizzarts and places down the street too.

FEW people inside..... it seemed like everybody was on the sidewalk ( chain ) smoking.

I must admit that it's FUCKING ANNOYING to have your friends tell you every 5 minutes that they're going outside for a smoke. Add that to their going to the toilets and you don't even get to see your friends for the night ! They're either taking a leak or smoking...

People who attended " we like the bass " noticed it too :

" Everyone was outside smoking all night thats why. Everywhere across the city at every bar and every party over 1/2 of the people will always be outside. when I got to the party there were at least 20-30 people outside. People still attend but they just stay outside all night. Three of my friends never even came into the party once they just stayed outside all night. damn smokers! [...] " ( We like the bass review thread )

" Plus the smoking thing IS killing everything.. parties, clubs, bars, pubs, afterhours... everyone is hurtin'... " ( idem )

In this thread, feel free to add random thoughts about the smoking ban, club dynamics, and such.

Actually, it doesn't work in every other province. Using Ottawa as an example: Attendance has never recovered to the old levels. Ottawa had about 270 bars/clubs before the ban. Within one year of the ban, that number was under 200. Several years later, they're back up to about 220, however, overall sales are down 23.5%, several jobs have been lost, and several small business owners who have contributed heavily to the economy have been forced into bankruptcy.

That's the Government of Ontario's own data, and is reported at [ www.pubcoalition.com ]

Government has no place regulating what I put into my body. That includes allowing me to choose if I wish to work in a smokey environment. Smoke poisons the surrounding environment, but if I choose to immerse myself in poison, then I am an adult and fully qualified to make that choice.

I kind of appreciate the smokign ban even as a smoker, I don't think this affects smokers that much but nobody ever seems to bring up the issue of small business and the contribution this new law is making to capitalism. This is going to murder small business's. People still go to bars, they just go to the ones that have terrasses. A lot of bars will build terrasses cause of that, I know a lot of them already have/are but there are some places where they just don't have any place to put one. The big bars are getting bigger and the small bars are gonna get smaller. I imagine that anyone opening up a new bar will not even consider not having a terrasse. I think there's a good chance of things eventually going back to normal for small businesses since their investments will me more in with the times and the laws but the existing small businesses are getting shafted.

haha good point.

if there was a law where you can bring your drinks outside, but not beyond the bar sidewalk....

If people are so concerned about their lungs and bitch about other people smoking, why isn't there any laws vs co2 emissions from CARS.
When you're downtown and you cross the street, notihng like getting a puff of smoke from exhaust pipes.

Yeah they should gradually ban fossil fuel burning cars, that would be a lot better, that's a much bigger problem than smoking. I mean I can avoid smoke if I have to, but the polluted air from cars is all around me.

I think the main reason for passing this law (second hand smoking) was highly exagerated to put the ban in place.

I'm not saying that second hand smoking is great for you and you get your 3 servings a day, far from it.

Ask yourself by how much does second hand smoke increases your chances of getting a tobacco related disease? 2, 5, 10 times....let's go as far as 100 times just for the sake of this discussion.

That being said, if you don't smoke or allow smoking in your home. Add to that, not growing up with smokers for parents. Your chances of getting lung cancer is at what?! .01%?! Going to clubs and inhaling second hand smoking will increase your chances by 100 times of getting lung cancer?....ok but 100 times what?! ... .01%!!! That brings you up to what?! Oh no you're now running the high risk of 1% chances of catching emphesima? Yeah ok big whoop.

I dunno what the government has in mind but it just has to be something else then our health at heart. If they did, they would start with way more efficient methods just like someone else said, pollution. I mean honestly, going to bars is not the reason why kids are born with asthma.....am I wrong?

What about the famous argument about tax payers having to provide for medical treatments of sick smokers caused by their devil weed inhaling? Yeah ok, has anyone ever asked how much taxes go into the government from cigarette sales. Remember that smokers pay taxes too. Last time I checked, smokes are like 65% taxes. The average dying smoker has more than covered his medical expenses when he reaches that point.

I tried making that point over dinner with a non-smoker friend who was insisting on getting my opinion but yeah all I got was "What right do you have to talk, you're a smoker." What the fuck, is this the new racism? hahaha.

So I just didn't say shit 'cause what's the point when you don't give a fuck about my opinion? But please, if you don't wanna know, don't fucking ask and ruin a nice moment. I don't have the choice but to go outside and smoke while you have the choice to shut the fuck up about it hehehe

Anyways, the main thing that bothered me about this law was how they announced it. -This is the Choice that Quebec made-

Anyone remember choosing that? I sure don't and if we would've really had a vote and the people would've voted for it, even at 50.1%, I woul not be typping this long as reply :b

....and that just triggers another question....why is it we never had the chance to vote on that issue?

Why is it that the same government who sells cigarettes is banning them?

I personaly don't know why but it really makes me wonder.
