true, but once they stop updating it other companies can take over and charge you for the good versions, like with linux.

Noeform, on what code base do you think Netscape 8 is? Firefox! (while Netscape 6-7 were based on Mozilla)
Mozilla was started by Netscape after Netscape 4.0, they released their source code for the Mozilla Project. Meanwhile, AOL and Sun bought Netscape and kept the Mozilla project. It took almost 4 years to have the 1.0 version of Mozilla. There is some few people that work on Mozilla that are paid by Netscape and others are contributor.

Sophia, the license of Mozilla deny to put the software in closed source and not distribute itsource code. Such licenses have been tested in justice!

Thanks for clearing that up, I had no idea.

Open source means anybody.. wait, no.. ANYBODY can get their hands on the code.. then start making their own version of it. Should the day ever come that firefox become evil.. ANYBODY can come along and continue working on it (with the nicely provided source code) and make a newer/better version of Firefox.. now obviously they would have to rename it.. but the product would still be the same.

It's nearly impossible for an open source projected to "go evil", cause if it ever does, people will just make their own versions of it and ignore the evil one.

Why on earth would Mozilla start to charge for Firefox? There isn't a single browser out there that charges for it's use, including Microsoft's Internet Explorer. If they started to charge for Firefox, I (and many others) would just go back to IE, or Opera, or Netscape.

The only thing open source guarantees is that what's out right know will stay free

Ok, you win. Mozilla is going to start charging soon, so we should all stop using it and move to Opera.
