DJ, you are talking about something that i do for a living. Trust me, real nice physics is UNFEASABLE in real time on today's computers. So they take mathematical shortcuts, approximations etc to deliver real time. Its still not 'the real thing'. Also, plotting triangles is pure maths too, same with applying shadings and other color effects.

Think about it this way: If you get more cpu for physics, the entire levels of doom 3 could react like they should: holes in walls, falling stuff that is not scripted, pushing something unto other things, etc.. why isnt there a game that has complete terrain modification possibilites? because the cpu cannot handle the amount of maths to run these objects and espcially apply physics to them.

i'm not saying graphics need no cpu, i'm sayign physics need alot more than you may think.

god example: Car games like nsf underground do not limit the numbers of cars in a race because they have to draw them, but because they have to run AI and Physics on them.

I'm selling my XBox soon, and my GameCube. Buy this new holy machine, then wait for the N Revolution to drop it's price to 99$, then buy it. Fuck PS3. Everyone is going to own one anyway.

Yeah physics needs a lot of horsepower to run. A lot of the biggest supercomputers/clusters are used to solve physics problems (weather forcasting, oil-drilling, Astrophysics, etc..).

Even relatively simple models such as the interaction of gravity between 3 objects would need a pretty powerful system to model accurately.

It's time you guys stop thinking about graphics in games.
Having better graphics doesn't mean you'll have better games, you should understand that.

better graphics improve the overall feel.

if games still looked like super mario brothers, the gaming industry would have died loooong ago.

... or not.

anyways, i think you ppl thinking about how they can produce it at low cost are missing the point:

they are not.

They are losing money on every unit that will be sold (like the xbox, ps2). They will regain that money by grabbing important marketshares and selling games. Also, as some articles pointed out, the goal of the xbox 360 is to become a media center. Its so microsoft be THE machine in your living room. So eventually you replace your tivo, your dvd, your cd cases, etc...

Also, notice how the enw specs dont improve on graphics much, they just put the latest generation vid card in that, nothing fancy. The rest is for physics/ai/game stuff like pointed out earlier.

Also, I find (personal opinion) that games look better on TV than on my computer. The 'blur' effect makes it less obvious to see the angles and meshes of the PC versions of games.

And the next gen renderers will use techniques that have no effect on the visual media. Its more about movements, textures (i mean, the texture feel).

Take a picture of the real world at a resolution of 320x240. It still looks more liek the real world than a computer generated 2048x1600 image.

Brainwashed by the lame arguments the game journalism industry created in order to have less job.

I don't agree that the gaming industry would had died.
If it was the case, explain the fact that there is games coming out that doesn't focuse on graphics and still manages to get better review than games with amazing graphics. example: Katamari Damacy

Following your way of thinking, if the movie industry hadn't managed to improve their special fx, it would had died looooong ago.

C'mon, you can't really think it's true.

the best multiplayer game out there has 256 color 2d graphics.

best selling games dont all have top notch graphics. GTA does not have the kick ass graphics other games have. What makes it hot (besides the gameplay) is that the city is HUGE: More Objects (more cpu/ai/physics... catch my drift :) )

Diamond Mine, 2d 256 colors

that new thing, the mmo golf game from korea. It has shit graphics, yet it is very popular.

Graphics are a nice thing, but every gaming industry leader will tell you that the future of gaming is not in improved graphics. Sure it will help, but its not only about that.

World Of Warcraft, voted game of the year 2004.
BTW, the WoW initials aren't meant to represent the graphics of the game.

I won't debate this issue with you any further and I'm glad you don't work in the gaming industry cause it's people that has your way of thinking that would trully kill the industry.

on a side note, Lego Star Wars has amazing graphics, fun gameplay, superb co-op play, great sound and music. Its the best game i've played in years. Despite how lame it sounds, you should all try it. Know tho, that it is quite easy and made for kids.

best multiplayer games have 2d graphics?! what ARE you talking about?

and obviously citing WoW as not having spectacular graphics is stupid, it's MMORPG..! and the only reason they're not great is because today's computers aren't fast enough to handle massive worlds with heavy detail. :P
