OK, now i just read the specs on this thing, can someone explain to me how they're going to be able to sell this thing for less than $1000 ?

[ hardware.teamxbox.com ]

Custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU
-3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each
-512 MB GDDR3 RAM
-20gig HD
-DVD Reader
-500Mhz Custom ATI Processor

now i cannot figure out this whole 3 CPU deal..

From what I'd heard somewhere, they mean dual-core.

Yes. 3x3.2gig dual core CPUs.

Gonna be sick I think...

3 x 3.2 Ghz ?!?!??!?!

Holy sweet Lord. What's the deal with only 512 RAM though ?

you don't need tons of ram unless you run the entire game in ram, or if you have an excredibly high resolution display.
since it's gonna be used on a tv screen i can't even figure out why they need 3 CPUs.. :P

Yeah, that's true though. It doesn't have anywhere near the same resolution as monitor.

But yeah, 3 CPus, that's just crazy. Oh the marvelous crashes and freezes this thing will be having...

You should see the ambitious next gen games we are currently developping, thrust me, that overpower is really needed.

untill they increase the resolution of the display, i will always think those consoles are overpowered..

wheer do you see a direct link between the resolution and the cpus? The video card has its own cpu?

I think its more usefull to think of it this way: More cpu = better AI, = better physics, = more nmes at same time, = more world details.

Imagine what kind of AI you could create if one of the 3 cpu was working only on that.

LuckyC, where do you work? Ubi? EA? A2M? Microids? other?

more details? no, resolution affects this directly.

imagine taking a picture on a cameraphone versus on a 12megapixel camera.. it doesn't matter how fast the cameraphone can take the pciture, the quality still looks like ass.

TV screens are not capable of displaying high details..

and no AI requires that much CPU power.. CPU's are already encredibly powerfull, you can have amazing AIs with a 300mhz cpu..

Hey Ian, why don't you go run Doom 3 on a 386 sx/33. If you put in a top-of-the-line graphic card you won't have any problems running it.

doom 3 = huge resource hog.

Half-Life 2 all the way.

Lots of tasks are cpu bound
It sure helps to have lots of cpu power when you've got lots of heavy AIs and physics.

Tho the main thing is that it opens door to new opportunities, like some nice real time ray tracing for example.

Smurf: I'm at Ubi, I also worked for Microids in the past.

neoform, i think you are wrong.

1) AI could take as much cpu as it could. In fact, would i be developping for the xbox, that would be the main reason i'd be happy. Also, remember that often you need more than 1 instance of your AI rolling. Look at star wars battlefront: They stripped down the AI to have more units. So the AI Sucks.

2) Real physics is almost the biggest cpu hog in games. You cant build a complete human physics model on current cpus.

3) You can increase the level of polygones, but as you said, on current tv's it doesnt show for much, but like lucky sayz, you can use the cpus for other graphic helping tasks.

4) More details: Yes. If you have 3 cpus updating your world, it can update more objects, it can als do lots of cool visuals, lighting and stuff like that.

LuckyC: are you underpaid? Granted i went like 7 years ago, but they offered me 23k as a lead programmer. Of course i laughed at the guy and asked him if he was serious and he was.

besides that, ubi makes kick ass games.

Alright, then, run HL2 on a 386 DX/33. You can find 386/486 MBs with PCI slots on them. Install a Radeon 9600 onto a 386 board and tell me your CPU can run HL2 (because obviously the only thing that requires any kind of intense processing is the graphics)

nope. math is something a CPU is built for. This thing is rated at 1 Teraflop. a Teraflop is A trillion floating point operations per second. That's a fucking buttload of math.
Doing things like drawing a triangle on screen or shading a given area takes thousands more cpu operations than a simple math algorythm. Phsysics models are complicated to make, but are very easy for a cpu to run. Powerful CPUs are more needed to accellerate load times.. 3 CPUs running each at 3.2Ghz is mad overkill for a gaming console.
