Intrigued by the concept of the remix, he started buying 12"s by his favourite pop artists, gradually moving towards the more underground house sounds coming out of Detroit and Chicago. Once in college, however, he discovered Montreal's fledgling rave scene, and the harder European sounds that drove it: dropping out of school shortly after, he devoted himself to deejaying full time. After just a few months of intense practice, he got his professional rave debut in 1994, and quickly grew a strong following in Montreal and the surrounding area. Combining the funky rhythms and soul of house music with the hypnotic repetition and intensity of techno, he developed a unique sound that manages to appeal to fans of both. His skill at working a crowd, combined with his impeccable programming and seamlessly mixing, makes his sets irresistible to dance to and has made him one of the most respected DJs in the city. He has held residencies at 5 different clubs in the city (which earned him a top 5 spot in the 'best club dj category' in a recent Montreal Mirror reader's poll), and has made countless guest appearances headlining in bars and raves across the country. Pushed by the desire to broaden his horizons, he decided that producing his own music was the next step. Fuelled by the local success of his early productions, he decided in 1998 to invest himself fully as a recording artist, cutting down on his hectic deejaying schedule to build up his own studio and produce seriously, developing his sound. The fruits of this labour are quickly coming to light: in a short time, he has released records on all the prominent montreal-based techno record labels, which has lead to an A & R position at Default recordings, and long-term record deals with several others, including Disktrick and Turbo recordings. His releases consistently find themselves in the charts of some of the biggest DJs in the world, including Carl Cox, DJ Dan, Josh Wink, and Adam Beyer. And with the increasing demand for his production skills from outside of the city and his growing reputation as both a live act and a DJ, the next year promises to make him one of Montreal's biggest exports. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOLTECH is the name given to the last surviving descendant of the ancient Toltec empire that, in its heyday, spread across most of Mexico, the Yucatan and Guatemala. Much like the leaders of the Toltecs, Carlos is revered by devoted tek-heads as a deity whose youthful demeanor will be eternally preserved. Continuing the militaristic aesthetic style of his heirs, the incomparable Toltech drops merciless hard tek cuts for MTL’s Level 4 and Alien Crew production companies. He thrives under pressure, performing perhaps his best sets when condemned to distorted sound systems and bruised mixing consoles, cementing his stature as an underground soldier. The percussive nature of Latin American rhythms continually pervades Toltech’s productions and DJ sets, as this modern warrior acts as the sole spokesperson for a dying lineage. AXIONFIGGA and THE HIGH COMMISSION. In a distant past, intelligence community’s codename for the heads of the five contraband crime families was The High Commission. According to recent reports filed by the Minister Of Information (M.O.I.), a mysterious force known as the black hand re-ignited these bootlegging fires by bringing together several key figures: DJ yomama, Mr. T a.k.a. Peter Parker, Egyptian Magician, Double-0 Flow & Axionfigga. A young lad was able to overcome a serious case of shyness to put together the most rad “running-man” party of 1989, his Bar Mitzvah. Although a memorable experience, lessons needed to be learned outside of the dance circle. Having now become a man, Mr T took some years away to reflect and study music. Many cassette mixes later, DJ yomama and Mr. T began to expose others to their selector and promotional skills with Tuesday nights at Montreal’s original Peel Pub and special BackSpinKick events at Café Frappées and Annie’s. Rap, Funk, Rock and other styles were generously mixed. Gathering a happy crowd of college drinking buddies and raising a few ski-trip funds, times were good. The High Commission was proud but not content. Always keeping things moving, they called in a favour. As a result of a financial debt to one of T.H.C.’s business associates, Egyptian Magician was compensated with two Technics SL1200 turntables. Sending him on a journey to the vinyl frontier: rap, breakbeat and trip hop/ninja tune records were acquired. But ultimately, due to such classic albums as Goldie’s Timeless, Metalheadz Platinum Breakz and AWOL Live, Drum & Bass would become the weapon of choice. A short time later, Egyptian Magician was playing out ambient dnb, jump-up jungle and hiphop at numerous loft parties, McGill OAPs, as well as the Schizo and Horizons club nights. Then came the Next Junktion, a weekly net radio show on [ sweet-ting.com ] with Axionfigga & D-Joos. THC was reaching out for maximum satisfaxion. Meanwhile, Double-O flow was spreading his love of drum&bass to the West Coast. Starting with his Majesty’s Secret Service residency at the Savage Beagle in Whistler and then at full moon parties around the beautiful and majestic B.C. surroundings. Always rocking it with the help of Toronto taxi driver and friend MC Wildchild, the duo would insist dance floors felt the bass. In search of new and fresh underground opportunities, The High Commission began working with partners in crime Freak Addiction, Kracked Knuckles and Cognitive Vibe to form the in Da Jungle Family. From its modest beginnings at Nantha’s Kitchen, a small plateau bar to massive Gravity Afterhours, iDJ events have been held in the most diverse, warm and extraordinary venues, packing in the friendliest and energetic 514 crowds. By throwing jams for 36 months straight, as well as touring on the iDJ bus to shows in Quebec, Ottawa, Albany and Toronto, THC has earned its license to rock. On the djing tip, Axionfigga moves the crowd with his own wide-ranging sound of drum & bass, mixing liquid funk, Latin and neurotek while also frequenting the dark and bass heavy side. Conversely, Egyptian Magician has stuck with the lighter side of music, playing classic rap, funky pop cheese and various 80s and club favorites at special events like the opening of the Fonderie Darling/Quartier Ephemere, Luba Lounge, Quartier Latin, Modani’s, Chai Café and other inebriating jams. Celebrating the iDJ 3-year anniversary by adding a Montreal date to the Klute (Commercial Suicide, BBS-UK), No One’s Listening Anymore album Tour, the focus has now shifted from quantity to quality shows.
