my dad's company transferred him to tokyo for 1992-1995. the whole country, according to us, is ass backwards.
it's like being right handed all your life and then being forced to use your left hand. takes a lot of practice. if you give up after a few days you'll never learn. |

Might as well chip in since I'm living in Japan...
When I got here I had to share an apartment in suburban Osaka with roommates who didn't give a shit about me... I had to take the train to go to town, which I didn't find too enchanting either. So right off the bat I hated my experience. But now I'm in Kyoto, a pretty and quiet place, and I can get anywhere in a single bike ride. As for backwardness... I must say, chain store clerks being forced to shout "irasshaimaseeeeeeeeee" all day long (in what looks like 10 hour shifts) and listen to the same songs ad nauseam is not what I'd call decent working conditions. Not to mention those recycling trucks blasting their retarded, useless jingles as early as 8 every day... ugh. But there's cool stuff too. Today I got served lemonade in a record shop that specialises in noise and is run by a major babe. How fucking cool is that. And contrarily to popular belief there are simple ways of living cheaply in Japan without resorting to cup noodles. (One of them being: pick a city other than Tokyo!) |

i love to travel but i`ve also had experiences living in other countries, and i have to say its not the same as travellikng, i never really enjoyed my stay in a country when it was for longer than a few months, its really hard to fit in somewhere else, with ppl that have different costoms and ways of being. The experience has generally been bad for me. |

it is difficult, yeah...i moved down to a caribbean island not too long ago for work, and after a couple months i couldn't handle it anymore....people love the caribbean for vacation, but it is a VERY slow paced life, something a city person like me isn't used to. i got so bored. i have a friend thats currently living in tokyo...and he loves it...he can speak the language fluently though already. and another friend of mine actually lived in tokyo for YEARS and when she came back to canada she had hard time getting used to here....it was a culture shock reversed, heh. |

eesh (i haven:t had the chance to reply before now)...
for those of you who think the fashion is sick, it:s not great. the style here right now is to dress like mary kate olsen (think burlap sacks layered on top of eack other). you have to be an inside out person to pull it off becasue on anyone regular it looks like marternity wear. (like babydoll style too). and the jeans at almost every strore come in size 24 and 25 only, or SS,S,M,L (i:m a 26 and i wear a L). the shoes are S,M,L (i wear a 6 to 6.5 and i:m a size M) and most tops only come in large coz it:s the style (or size F, which is one size fits all). i dunno, clothingwise it:s pretty wack actually. oh and you:re not allowed trying on any tops either so you have to just buy shit and hope it fits. the only cool thing are the second hand stores coz eevryone wears mad expensive shit. i got a moschino leather bag for 300Y (thats like 3 bucks) and the stores are just FILLED with YSL, and versace and stuff... for everythign else: at first i wanted to die becasue (for eevryone who knows my parents) theyve never told me what to do my entire life and just let me do whatever i wanted. then i get here at 20 yrs old and my uncle (who is my grandmas sisters husband) who id never met in my life didnt want me to leave the house unsupervised. which came as a huge shock and disspaointment considering there was SO much i wanted to see and seeing things with them is hardly an option (theyre all freakin old and can barely walk) then everytime iw as like `fscrew this` my grandma would tell me i was killing her and that i was gonna give her a heart attack. at this point i can pretty much do whatever i want but im so depressed/ broke/ im coming back on monday that i cant really do a whole lot and yeah everything is cool the first time you go but after that it:s not great. like namba is pretty cool (and that was a rukus and a half to go to mind you, apparently theres alot of drugs, prositutes and loan sharks there according to my grandma and i nearly killed her then too) but after going twice it:s not great. i:m pretty much bored of osaka completely (i:m staying near there). i went to nara (which was probably the most incredible experience of my life), kyoto (and i:m going back there tomorrow), kobe... i dunno all around here. but no tokyo :( anyway, i can:t wait to get home and i:m never leaving again without my bf or a friend coz this sucks. the all-japanese thing isn:t what shocked me, it:s realyl women:s place in society here. women have to either work or have kins and can:t have both. it:s still not really acepted for women to work and have kids or be married and not stay at home. it:s almost disgusting and the fact that men (not jsut in my house) think they run things. i think visiting japan and living like/with japanese people are completely different. i thought i was going to come here to visist and it turned out not to be that at all... |

HOLY SHIT. it:s unbrearble, i hate shopping becasue of that, it:s ddrives me iNSANE where were you living outsdie osaka? i:m staiyn gin mino (monkey country) but yeah, i get free shit almost everywhere i go. i bought a bottle of booze (which is practically free here it:s so cheap) and they gave me free beer, i got 30$ off a cd playa today, i got free face cream at the pharmacy, free playing cards at the car rental place, free magazines and catalongues at stores, ti:s pretty good. |
