 Coolness: 81695 | Public places will never be COMPLETELY smoke-free in my opinion... They passed a law years ago which made smoking in all office buildings forbidden. In all truth it depends on your employer. I've worked in 3 different offices since that law has passed and smoked in all 3. two of them had smoking rooms while the other allowed all employees to smoke at their desks if we desired to do so. Everyone who did smoke was more productive because we never left our desks or stopped working to go have a cigarette. Even some building owners and superintendants dont give a damn because they either smoke themselves or are paid off to keep their mouths shut. Realistically, they shouldn't really care unless someone in the building specifically makes a complaint since its the person who's renting the office space that gets fined and not the building owners themselves.
I do sympathize with all the non-smokers who often find themselves in smoking environments with no other option. But seriously,... who's forcing anyone to go to bars? Everyone's so concerned about the dangers of second-hand smoke... What about the dangers of drinking? Hell, they should make a law that forbids anyone from parking a car within a 3 kilometer radius from any bar to reduce the number of drunk driving accidents... Or better yet, bars can establish cover charges that would cost more the average cab ride home,... say $30-$40 and instead of paying the charge, people have the option to give up your car keys instead. Upon leaving, the bouncer checks your blood alcohol level and based on the results he either gives the keys back or makes you wait another hour before redoing the blood-alcohol test. |

i don't really care if smoking ban takes place here. i'm a occasional smoker, averaging 'bout 1 pack every 2 months, sometimes longer than that. There are 3 place which i will never let someone smoke: my room, my bathroom and the kitchen (if there is cooking being taken place). |

At least people who are drinking don't force others in their vicinity to suffer from the direct negative effects of drinking on the liver and other parts of the body. Surprisingly, there sometimes are reasons to go to a bar/club/venue that don't involve getting trashed even, for example: to enjoy music, dance, and to socialize. Of course the mental impairing effects of drinking COULD cause harm to others, and I'm not saying I support drunk drivers, fighting, and vulgar stupidity. Basically I'm saying that people who choose to drink should be able to go somewhere without having to suffer from smoke related problems. Another possitive point is a smoking ban in bars would give "social smokers" (which used to be my situation untill recently) a reason to not smoke at all... |

| Coolness: 105795 | I just got back from the new W hotel in Montreal and the bar I was at was non smoking. As a smoker trying to quit, it did me well. I had 3 cigarettes in 3 hours (went outside in the cold) as opposed to the usual half-pack or pack I would of had in that time in a smoking bar. |

And ya I was obviously being sarcastic about banning drinink in bars (especially since drinking is to bars what food is to restuarants) but it's nonetheless a reality that stupid behavior due to alcohol is a major negative consequence of going out. Some typical examples include: being attacked by over-aggresive drunk ppl over stupid reasons (like hitting on a girl that the drunk person just so happened to be hitting on too), getting BARFED on, or just the all-too-typical case of having some random dude with foul alcoholic breath yelling some incoherent, babbling nonesense three inches from my face. |
