I watched 2 good sci-fi movies that isn't the junk food space opera of Star Trek and Star Wars. These 2 films are small in scope, but the meaning/message is superb.

1. Moon

Sam is on his last 2 weeks of his 3 years long contract on the Lunar mining base. Alone for 3 years with nothing but a robot named Gerty and delayed phone video messages to keep him company, Sam begins to discover himself.

It starts with a mind fuck to a story about the human condition.

2. Sunshine

In the near future, our Sun is dying and all of the nations pulled resources to build spaceships called Icarus 1 & 2. These ships would carry some sort of gigantic Manhattan Island bombs to give the Sun a boost, or spark to start the fusion chain reaction to start again. Icarus 1 didn't succeed, "Sunshine" is about the voyage of Icarus 2 and its crew.

Sunshine borrows a little from every other sci-fi pace movies, except for the junk food space operas. I like all the different parts, but as whole, I'm not sure.

I highly recommend the book, BlackWater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army by Jeremy Scahill.
The book came out before BlackWater hit mainstream media and became a household name.

But this goes way back in 1995 with Executive Order, a mercenary army of former South Afrika Apartheid soldiers. Angola had a rebellion in their diamond rich field, and they pay Executive Order 35 millions to quell the rebellion. EO took 2 days to retake the diamond fields, and 9 days to crush the rebellion. Since then, PMC became a huge industry.

If prostitute is the oldest profession in the world. Then mercenary is a close 2nd.

It would work like this: let's say Suburb Alpha needs police force for this amount of money ( within budget). Company A, B, and C all apply. But C gets the contract because they said the will offer the best service for the lowest price. But then what kind of service will you have?

And good old USA did that with Private Military Contractors/Companies (PMC) for their war in Iraq and Afghanistan. For example, infamous Blackwater had mercenaries or private contractor for 600$+ a day. But they started to recruit Chileans, former elite soldiers under Pinochet, for 1000$ a month. The whole privatization of Armed Forces is just mind-boggling, fascinating, and posed numerous ethics problems.

I just don't want to fathom how it would go if essential services was motivated by money and no scrutiny, considering the large financial institution/corporation mistakes of the last decade. This sexagenarian died of an heart attack because Private Health Contractor couldn't send paramedics since they declared bankruptcy yesterday.

It would be an interesting social experiment if they privatized the police force, fireman, and health services. See if and what the invisible hand of the market would weed out. Like who doesn't want to see ED 209 walking down the street and says "you got 20 seconds to comply!"

"The first time I tried out the new Café Griffintown was during the summer, when it was serving the Bacon Explosion at brunch service. For those who don't remember, this was a recipe that went viral - in the best sense of the term - on the Internet early this year, calling for sausage meat to be stuffed into a sheath of woven bacon strips. (Maybe we'll look back on 2009 as the apex of backyard bacon worship; maybe the best is yet to come.) Beyond the obvious orgy of sodium and swine, what was memorable was that this tasty meat loaf was so carefully crafted."

oh yeah my bad, I keep mixing those 2 rhythm game ups.

I'm also in for Valve, but for different reasons. They've promised to finish and new contents for Left4Dead but secretly for 1 year, been working on Left4Dead 2. They basically lied for almost a whole year. And Left4Dead 2 could have been an expansion.

But since L4D did so well on Xbox 360, all they saw was money, and planned a "new" sequel game shortly after the release of its original. Left4Dead is still missing key features and contents.

Activision CEO is dumb, bitching about PS3 being too pricey, yet their Rockband games are exorbitant. Sony planned to drop the price of the PS3 way before his comments was made.

Anyhow, me too, I'm boycotting a publisher: Ubisoft and its in-house games.

Usually in a game, you play as an underdog against an overwhelming force. You never feel you accomplished something if you're on the overpower side. In MW 2 (or similar game), you play as S.A.S or Marines or Special OPs. They're pretty much top dogs.

So I always wondered what it would be like if you're the underdog again, even if you play as a "bad guy". Wouldn't it be more challenging if you went against the military machine of U.S.A. or NATO? I wonder if they (the game companies)'ll included more terrorists or freedom fighters or rebels type levels. I guess this mission was to test the water.
