Big thanks to our guest last week, Jonny Jungle, who we will all be seeing more of in the coming months at The Session.

TUESDAY February 2nd
-----------------------------------

CONSTRUCT [Cult Theory, Bassdrive Wednesdays, [ wickedbad.net ]
------------------------------------------------------------------

Whether it's through his many radio shows, his weekly at Koi with Vilify, his J'aime le Dubstep podcasts or any of his other muscial ventures since coming to Montreal, Construct has been making some serious moves over the last year. Like Vilify, it's easy for his taste in Drum & Bass to get backburnered in terms of recognition due to all the work he puts in on the Dubstep side of things, so we wanted him to come throwdown on a Tuesday as show us all what's what. He's also got the most fantastic swagger when bowling outside of any professional league we have ever seen. And no, that is not a joke

Bass-ic has definitely surpassed the title of ‘up and comer’. Over the course of 2009, he was highly instrumental in his promotion efforts for Jungle/DnB by co-producing events which brought in talent such as Ed Rush, Camo and Krooked and Spor, in association with his crew Twisted Bass. What’s more, for someone who impressed us years ago when we first saw him, he has continued to develop his DJ skills and track selection giving us something to look forward to anytime we have the chance to see him play, this Tuesday being no exception.

We will be using the same group (though changing the name) as well as continuing to use our friends lists in invite people.

If invites are a problem for you, you can feel free to remove yourself from the group, if you are in it, or if it's really that big a deal, just remove Mary and/or I from your friends list, and that should solve the issue.

I hadn't seem SMD live before and was pretty excited. I'm happy to say that not only did they not disappoint but that their live show is VERY impressive. One of the best shows I have seen in the last little while, hands down. it was a bit frustrating to suffer from serato issues on a night i was actually playing vinyl, but eehh, what can you do...it was frustrating as hell as the time, but everyone really enjoyed themselves by the look of it and in the end, that's all that matters.

we have a few ideas for the next one, so stay tuned!

Honestly, I didn't have the highest hopes for this jam cause of the last party I went to at this location (but it was also one of the coldest days and winter, so maybe that came into play the last time around) but I am really happy I ended up going.

The DNB room filled up real, real nice and Camo and Krooked played a surprisingly wide range of DNB and didn't just stick in sort of one direction, I liked that.

Hats off to everyone involved on both side of the fence, you guys all did a great job!!!

Maybe because they have better things to do then sitting around on an internet discussion forum listening to people bad mouth them.

They don't owe us anything. Plane schedules get moved, it happens. Deal with it.

EDIT. And if you WERE there, you would know they MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT AT THE PARTY. They explained EVERYTHING over the mic, in front of everyone.

The sense of entitlement this situation has brought up is seriously insane.

You know, when I got home last night, it got me thinking about a few things that I had not really intended to share with anyone other than maybe my close friends.
But I thought I thought maybe I would share those things now. Actually no, I think I SHOULD share them.

When I stepped to the turntables to play yesterday, I was more terrified of anything than I have ever been in my life. I’m pretty much at the point now where I don’t get nervous before I play. The wind was strong and blowing the tone arm off the platter of the turntable – I totally fucked up my first mix and that’s not the way you want to start off a set. The stage manager and not my new friend, Felix, passed me a couple of dimes to put on top of the head shell which worked for a bit, until I finally had to replace them with QUARTERs cause the wind picked up again.

Most stressful 5 minutes of my LIFE, but after that, things really got moving and I played a nice selection of tech-house and even slipped a few bangers in there before bringing it back down with a bit of baile funk type stuff and back into tech house.

DJing has become like a second nature to me I guess, which is great but I also felt like there was a lot riding on this show in a way and that added to my own tension. The promoters of this event took a big chance booking not only Noisia, but also myself and Corey and I felt there was a lot riding on us yesterday (and though I can’t speak for Corey I am pretty sure he felt it before he got up to play too) Thankfully I did a good job, though I had the shakes for a good portion of my set – hey I’m only human – I pulled it off and was happy to see a lot of smiling faces I knew and a lot I didn’t know and even a few people I hadn’t seen in a long time.

Drum and Bass kind of bottomed out here the last couple years, I even went on to start playing other stuff because I wasn’t getting booked otherwise cause there just WEREN’T enough events happening and it was either broaden my horizons or don’t play at all – and some of you already know this, but for those who don’t the latter was just not going to happen.

Still, I know there were and are promoters, though some not doing full Drum & Bass parties per say, that were still having Drum & Bass DJs play during this sort of downtime (especially a lot of the raves that go on etc) which was and is still amazing of them to do so.

With people like the promoters at Bassdrive, Forward, KO of course, and Corey himself, (I don’t take any credit for Corey’s parties – those are HIS productions, I’m just lucky enough that he lets me play a lot) things seem to be picking up again and that really excites me and I hope a lot of you agree that good events going on in this city again all at the same time is only good for ALL of us in the end. That goes to everyone, whether you’re a DJ, a promoter or MOST IMPORTANTLY someone who comes out to dance and support. Fans mean attendance and attendance means good parties. Good parties = happy times.

I think if you were there yesterday for Corey’s set and saw a shitload of ‘non-DNB’ people rocking out so fucking hard, it was good proof that there really is a market for DNB in this city and made even me realize that though I’m not a promoter (at all, never claimed to be, I’m terrible at it) I want to try and work just a little bit harder to push DNB here – especially to new audiences – in whatever was I can, even if that means getting of my ass going making it out to SUPPORT events more when I can, instead of staying home and watching movies. If I want to play DNB more often, maybe I need to be more positive and pro-active and be a part of the solution rather than just bitching that there's not jams to play at.

Regardless of me getting to play yesterday, hearing Corey play at Picnik and play DNB more specifically, and watching the crowd reaction – a good portion of which likely have no real exposure to DnB – reminded me of why I started doing this in the first place, of why we ALL do this, and made me realize how so much of my life and everything I am doing right now - my friends, my job both DJing and working for [ dogsonacid.com ] and yes even the city I live in – came to me because I developed a sick obsession with music that runs at 175 beats per minute or higher. Ha.

Having Noisia play would have been the Cherry on top of a very delicious Sunday, but honestly I had such a good fucking time while Corey played, that in the end, I don’t give a shit. Picnik is 10$, every week, regardless of who is there and I would have been there on the stage with him regardless of whether I played or not. That is 7.5 hours of my life that will be burned into my memory forever.
Thank you EVERYONE at Picnik, thank you Corey K, and most of thanks to everyone who came, new fans and old and DANCED and SMILED and CHEERED and PUMPED THEIRS FISTS IN THE AIR.

Drum & Bass. FUCK YEAH!

I don’t how to embed youtube videos, but here’s a clip of the closing moments of Corey’s set.

Here's the interview some of your guys helped me with questions for. I'll tell you now that the production secrets you all wanted to get your hands up ended up being the questions they were pretty tight lipped about.

Regardless, here's the piece and thanks to those who submitted questions, I did my best to include them all!
