Thermal paste helps to distribute the heat more evenly but Neoform is right, it's much more important to make sure the fan is monted properly. I have an old alienware system in my basement that overheats when you run it for any length of time because the fan grinds like a lawnmower. Also, thermal paste does help and it is good to have it, if you're going to be overclocking your CPU you'll need every bit of cooling you can get. As well, you should look into computer parts and how everything works together, as well as a knowledge of the physical parts, before you start taking things apart and overclocking things and end up frying your CPU.
