"reason is proprietary garbage made for grandparents and AOL users woh need to have everything complicated done for them by someone."
said Fred~

dude, what the fuck is that supposed to mean??
are you calling me an aol user??
i don't appreciate that~
reason is a versatile program and i plan to use it until i have enough gear to replace it, and even then i would still use it for many things.
add cubase, and i record all the instruments / gear i have over top reason songs, and i can use all vst's i want.
if you can think of a better way for me to make music, i'd like to hear it~
*takes sammy's chill-pill*
thanks, i needed that~

Crap, right, you use reason.

One of the big problems I have with reason, other than the interface, is that, in my experience, 90% of the people who pick up reason to make music don't know heads or tails of what they're doing. They don't know fuck-all about synthesis, compression, EQ-ing, levels, mastering, etc.

People can load up reason, with NO experience or knowledge whatsoever of making music, and within 15 minutes they're on their way to making a "good" sounding track without any clue as to what the fuck they're doing. People who, while they may have a very real love for music, are still just producing to be cool. Part of this problem is things like the automatic limiting and the fact that you can't by default bring in much from the outside. 90% of reason users rely solely on refills and soundbanks to make ALL of their songs. They don't samples anything, they don't add any original sounds into it, they don't have a fucking clue wtf they're doing, and they get fooled into thinking they can produce music.

I have the exact same beef with people who think they "produce" using acid. Sure, acid is an amazing too to aid producers, but when your grandfather can pick up acid and a loop CD and think that he's creating music. It's a fuckin' cheat and a false boost in confidence.

And this goes for Dom as well as you Oliver and Eric. You guys put out amazing shit with Reason, but you have a serious love for music. From what I've seen and heard, most of the people who use reason, while they may be "serious" about production, they just don't have the originality and creativity needed to get anywhere with it. It's a fact that Reason does a lot of things like automatic limiting and such that most people don't have the time or want to learn to do properly, and therefor a lot of people just use it because it's a quick and easy ego-boost to say "Hey, look, I just started producing and finnished this amazing track!" with next to no work 2 hours after they start playing around with it.

I dunno, a lot of music software I find usually has a much steeper learning curve. For example, Buzz. :b And man, getting things to sound good in fruityloops is a chore, 90% of the things I've done with fruityloops I totally wouldn't release because it sounds like ass since I didn't know a lot of the intricacies of production and am still learning a lot. it's just got a friendly interface, but man od you have to fuckin' sweat to make things.

Reason has automatic limiting? Since when? I've seen it output clipping many times...

Fred, you could also say that those "groove boxes" that people buy are for newbs who don't know anything about music... But then I see @trix making sweet shit with those...

It's not the software you use it's the skills and talent you already have... I've used fastracker2 (learned how to produce with it), acid with loops from rebirth and fruityloops and other softsynth programs (got one of those songs on a compilation), buzz (done tons with it), Orion (now there is one you might not have heard of, the one released song I did with it was in the top20 goa tracks on [ mp3.com ] I've used reason also a lot (much of the atomic children stuff)... and once I get my new soundcard I will probably be using cubase more too...

okay, i will say, i've heard alot of garbage come out of reason, but in all honesty, i've heard more bullshit come out of fruity loops, than, ANY other program...and don't take that as an insult (cause some of you will) but its true...now...my question about vsts has to do with the fact that i don't really know what they're for, i'm not really into synths and modulating frequencies,
and that stuff, i mostly construct sample based music, and, it really is up to the person to make something sound good...the program can only help along the way...

i gotta say, some of you people are stuck up about the knowledge you hold

You ever try mastering a song in fruityloops to sound good? n00bs have NO idea what the hell mastering is about, how to check levels and balance out the mix, etc.., and I bring this up because....:

Reason outputs with a -3db pading on everything so that, while it may go in the red within reason, your output will be nice and friendly when you export the song. Actually, I believe YOU were the one that brought this to my attention.

ahaha, i've been saying that for awile, as much as i respect dj's who play good tunes and mix well, i don't consider playing other peoples music very original. but it does have it's time and place.
as always, there are exceptions, some dj's make it more interesting by creating a musical collage, sort of like kid-koala, or fishead at times.
but i find, in general, dj's get too much credit. . .
like when someone is listening to a dj mix, and they say . . .
"Oh, I LOVE THIS SONG . . . ("insert dj name here" ) is SO GOOD"
that really annoys me when people say that.
(again, no offence to all my friends who dj, i respect what you do and why you do it)
it's all for the love of music.

Fred I think I had told you that it was fruity that did the limiting becuase I noticed that in some songs made in it... -3 padding would suck because I like getting the loudest levels without clipping when I record a track so it doesn't need to be normalized or anything...

Screwhead: Youre saying that so called "noobs" dont know anything about mastering yet your tracks don't sound that good. You can try saying that my tracks arent better but I am not making any comparisons, i'm just saying that you are not that good at mastering to say who sucks or not

Fruity Loops does not do any auto limiting.

Fruity Loops compressor automatically limits sounds to 0db and there is no headroom, but otherwise Fruity Loops allows for at least +4dB of headroom and past that, things start to sound like shit.

i dunno why people knock down fruityloops . Guyver , one of the top guys on the label tidy 2 uses only software with fruityloops and he is very well respected by what he does with it . numerous releases on a huge uk label ...

it doesnt matter what you use . its the final quality that matters and if some softwares cuts corners then that artist will just progress a little slower in enineering or writing then others.

yeah most ppl will try presets and expect the shit to come out of them! i mean they are helpful but real quality music will emerge from learning the basics of mastering and the how-to in Fl sTudio !:)
