well, hip-hops main influences come from Jazz, Funk, Motown other "black" music. Though hip-hop has been very inspired from electro, i would not say it is derived from it. It's more derived from reggea Dj's who would loop break beats, from that, hip-hop started to emerge

roughly

reggae dancehall went through changes especially when americans stopped making beebop cause these jamaicans coudn't dance to rock&roll. so they sort of recycled old beebop and make a sound of their own, dub so on and so on

when they, kool herc and others, brought to america the kids here black and hispanic alike didn't dig the jamaican sound so it went through another change

then they mashed up the krafwerk beat and started doing the electric boogaloo and tutting to herbie hancock

drugs like coke was really popular and all these wannabe rockandroll stars with too much hair and expensive instruments got really depressed and created flock of seagulls wearing lots of black

then vanilla ice was born after all those mountain climbers were saying rap was just a fad and that it was gonna die. oh yeah they killed the graffity and breaking before deejays took the backseat

agreed. a lot of it is bullshit. repetitve loops of a simple beat with one sentence being repeated over and over throughout the song.

One act I highly recommend, though, is Soft Pink Truth - Do You Party? You might have heard their remix of Bjork's song "It's In Our Hands". They arent yr typical, boring, single-synth electro. My 2003 pick fa shizzle.

soft pink truth are amazing they are actually one half of matmos with some friends from the SF bay area. thier vanity 6 cover is awesome... but I dont know if I would call what they do so much eletro as it is electro or 80s synth booty pop influnced... their full length record is amazing ... you can find most of the matmos material around its equllay interesting more on the techno/house and idm tip.... but the best material by these guys comes as vague terraine on piehead records its all thier gay porn sound tracks amazing stuff... on note matmos are the guys behind bjorks music on her last few records which is how soft pink truth got the remix.... :)
