if there was no christianity, then chances are the roman empire would've lasted a lot longer unless Islam started shaking things up.

well there probably wouldn't be islam either since it grew out of the biblical religions

i think the question is all backwards though

religions don't exist because of religious texts

religions texts exist because of our thirst for answers to unanswerable questions and our acceptance of a prescribed way of thinking and behaving imposed by a higher authority

so if the bible didnt exist people would most likely adopt and follow another religious teaching...after all, if they were willing to submit themselves to the bible (which defintely could have used a much better editor in my opinion!) than most likely they would end up doing something similar even in the bible's adscence

and of course since the bible itself, but more importantly how it is understood and interpreted, is more a reflection of ourselves and our society than anything else, then nothing would really be much different unless other factors cause *us* to be different

if there were no such thing as peanuts, there would be no such thing as peanut allergies, and thus all the people that died through negative reactions with peanuts would have lived..

thus, potentially altering the entire course of world events...different marriages would have taken place, different children being born, causing different things to happen..

IF NOT FOR PEANUTS, YOU MIGHT HAVE NEVER BEEN BORN!!!

and oh yah, they would have to change the words to "take me out to the ball game" cause everybody would be asking what the HELL is a peanut?

Islam and Christianity are based on Judaism so I don't see why Islam wouldn't exist

i think we'd all be better off...
but i also think that we'd be a lot more primitive, since many scientific discoveries and advances were done in the name of religion... sure most people have a bad view of it now (for reason not understood by me) but a LOT of great things came to be because of Christianity...

also, i doubr the roman empire would have lasted longer... it didnt fall because of religious purposes... it was internal conflict and incestual (and consequently retarded) offspring, along with arrogance and laziness that caused their downfall... religious factors were VERY limited

even if we didn't have the of the major world religions we'd still be killing in the name of a god. For what we cannot understand we place in the realm of dieties.

this is kinda off topic but...

I don't see the concept of God as any more than an extension of socially created hierchies into the heavens. The higher up in rank you go (peasant, landlord, governer, king, etc these are just made up but you get the drift) you get fewer and fewer people who possess more and more power. Thus, for someone conditioned to such hierchies, its not far off to assume that there must be one big guy at the top of the pyramid who is the master of everything. Naturally since this is the Big Boss you want to be in his good books, but of course since God aint giving direct orders it falls into the hands of religious institutions to let you know what God really wants you to do and save yourself from sin and eternal damnation!!!

if the bible didn't exist, people would find another reason to kill each other.

If the bible didn't exist, people would have a lot less excuses for starting wars and killing each other.
