IDM is an overused term. Almost everything with a retriggered snare is considered IDM. However to group all IDM as talentless music is ridiculous. I've seen some fucking crazy IDM music, layering two or three tempos and three or four time signatures over each other. It's incredible what some of these tracks contain, both musically and technically wise.

This is where 4/4 lacks. It can't evolve past what it is, because if it does it's no longer 4/4.

I own some Autechre, Aphex Twin and weirder stuff, but I don't CALL it IDM!
I like some of the stuff that some people label IDM, but I loathe the expression because it's pretentious.

I've heard some 4/4 with an IDM touch (Kid spatula, aka µ-ziq for example)

Autechre is more like, ambient and glitch. It depends on which album.

Aphex Twin is more ambient and IDM and who knows what else. I think the name IDM came out of the fact that the people who make IDM generally have a more intelligent concept of beats.

its not necessarily more intelligent, but its definately more complex. I pass around a minute on my percussions with happy hardcore (which is 4/4) but if i want to do a beat for an idm track i can pass a couple hours on a 5 second loop to make it sound brainfucking

One thing is for sure: 6/4 music is the least intelligent (ahemNEWSTYLEgrhrmm)

I've heard several songs that had a 6/4 beat and a 4/4 melody (or vice versa) and it actually works.

I just meant that newstyle gabber generally sucks, and it happens to be almost exclusively in 6/4 ("piripipeee" pizzacore).

There's a lot of 6/4 tracks that I love and that wouldn't work otherwise.

6/4 is good. 8/3 is good, too. And they mix well.

6:4 is when the beat is divided in 3 instead of 4... I can't quite explain this as I do not know the proper english words for written music.

try it with a tracker: place a kickdrum every 3 (or 6) lines instead of every 4 lines and then try to fit the hihats and you'll (hopefully) understand...

example (shite):
