So, with all the super loud shit that goes on in a big urban city like Montreal, I hear that the city is cracking down .. mostly on noises/sounds that are amplified. For me, this translates to music. So, the city is basically going to be giving massive fines for loud music, and call it noise-pollution, when there are tons of other things that are fucking loud, and actual noise not music, like: sirens, trucks, buses, crazy screaming homeless people, construction, kids playing, loud city vehicles (street cleaners, garbage trucks), airplanes, etc. etc. etc.

So, why target music? What's the hidden agenda? And what can we do to express our discontent with absurd new laws, prohibiting us from listening to what we love instead of dealing with the cacophony of the Big City?

If I had the money, I'd place several loud sound-systems in various buildings, and lock 'em up good, just see the cops frustrate themselves to locate and shutdown the 'noise' ...

Maybe a sort of Montreal Noise Day, when everyone jacks up the volume on any speaker they own, in protest...

Maybe most of Montreal wants to become a calm pussified quiet shadow of itself, instead of the bustling nightlife-embracing city it's always been known and loved for. Somehow I think it's just the inlfux of snobby jerks buying condos in the middle of downtown, who think they can somehow live 'the quiet life', to the detriment and freedom of the rest of the city.

Some facts and statements I picked out of another thread, from Melodrastik:
''Par exemple, dans le cas d'un concert extérieur, le niveau sonore ne devra pas dépasser 80 décibels à 35 mètres de la scène ...
Un établissement qui laisse entendre de la musique hors de ses murs s'expose à des amendes allant de 1000 à 12 000$ ...
La chasse au bruit tant qu'à moi est devenue comme une chasse aux sorcières au détriment des artistes et ainsi remplir les poches des Gourvernement ... ''

They're supposed to be running a major North-American City, not a motherfucking library!

And, I'd like to add that the loudest things in Montreal, are being given exception to these rules, 'cause of CA$H! : Formula 1 car racing & LaRonde FireWorks ...
I'm feeling you up right now..

I think noise pollution is a problem... but targeting clubs and raves is just an excuse to make more money. All the industrial sectors of Montreal are being rezoned to residential areas and old industrial buildings are being turned into condos. I've spent a good 2 months looking for new venues and every potential building has some fucking residential area near by. I can understand people in quiet suburban areas wanting it quiet at night but if you decide to live in an area where there is nightlife you should deal with the fucking consequences. If we can't make noise downtown or in the plateau where the fuck can we make noise?

It's obvious they don't understand sound, but the way I see it if anybody actually takes a ticket to court it will never pass. A car passing by with an aftermarket exhaust can tip the gauge at 100dbspl even. How can they prove that it wasn't just the traffic that made the spl meter jump? Shit if they ever give me a fine I'll take it straight to court with a smile and the first thing I'll do is plop my degree in Electroacoustics on the table and make sure I use as many technical terms as possible and make everyone's head in the courtroom spin. I'm smiling right now just thinking of the stupid look on the cops face when I start talking about the absorbancy coefficients of the materials making up the walls and the phase interactions of sound when it bounces off parallel surfaces.

Fuck it, after picturing the scene I hope they fine me. If anybody here get's fined send me a message... I'd gladly come and help you defend your case.

Exactly! They call a db lvl constraint, barely knowing how that can (or usually cannot) be controlled. I'm sure they brought in an 'expert' to come up with the limits, but didn't really explore the world of sound. It really seems like an excuse to crackdown on stuff they've lost control of, due to our cleverness & the city's corruptness ...

And, if ever I need to, I will take you up on your offer, and throw in some other sound experts too :)
I'm feeling you up right now..

For sure... like the thing about sound not being able to leave your walls? It's mind boggling how something so stupid can become law. Sound is vibrations... it travels best in denser mediums because of the proximity of the molecules hitting each-other. Add to the fact that brick/concrete is an extremely porous material and the truth of the matter is that scientifically and technically any sound that happens within walls will be transmitted to the outside at one level or another. How can they quantify and prove something like that? If that's the case they'd have to shut down every club/bar/afterhours in Montreal.

All you have to do is walk into court and ask them what the specific numeric pressure and vibration amplitude limits are; or at what specific pascal level is sound to be considered escaping the walls. When they look around like the idiots they all are and tell you that those numbers don't exist (because there pretty much impossible to consistently calculate due to ambient noise) you basically won your case.

Jeez, I never knew that my electroacoustic degree could serve to something in my life. If you need help, I'm with you on this one.

yeah but cars are the worst for background noise in the city or the suburbs if you are near a highway.. it's like a constant wall of noise

Of course, but the overall db levels of cars isn't so bad as compared to other things. The white noise sort of background noise can actually be sort of relaxing in a weird way. Which would you rather have at 7:00 am in the morning: a few cars passing by or your neighbor blowing leafs off his lawn?

I don't mind the 80db at 35 meters. I do mind not being able to bring my sound to a park when the laws state I'm allowed as long as I'm not disturbing anyone! :)

Instead of doing stupid shit like cracking down of noise pollution ( serious, who gives a fuck ? If you find the city too noisy, move in the fucking Rockies and start bitching at the loud chirping birds. What did you expect, living in city of 2 million ? ), they should FIX THE FUCKING MOON CRATERS IN THE ROADS.

Just saying.

Police showed up at my place while I was working on a tune... on a week day at 3... in the afternoon!!!!!!! I asked what was a respectable, legal level at which I could make music and what time. They said people can make sound complaints at any time of the day and the good judgement of the officer on site determines if the level is acceptable... and if you can get fined on the spot.

Basically, my bullshit bs neighbor piece of fucking shit can call the cops anytime he pleases as long as he can faintly hear any music coming out of my apartment at any time of day because it disturbs his peace while he's watching reruns of some bullshit soap opera sitting on his fat bs ass instead of looking for a god damned job... motherfucker shit fuck

absolute total fucking bullshit!

awww well... it's hard to say

My neighbor was hell of problem with his singing and guitar, I called the police one day because it was too much for my nerves. A 2 1/2 appartment in a 40+ years old building is not a music studio.

But, before I talked to the owner and before calling the cops (which I think is the last thing you can do or punch the guy on his face), I had the balls to knock to his door and find a deal with him.

It's sad tough, police seems to do all the interpersonal jobs now, one day there will be kindergarden with police officers...

But living on St-Laurent and do complaints about a bar.... that's stupid

I remember a few years ago, a city counselor for the Ville-Marie burrough was lobbying hard to get afterhours and clubs closed in the gay village because of the noisy ( and drunk ) punters exiting the clubs from 3 am 6 am after receiving several noise complaints from residents. You've got to be pretty fucking retarded to live in the gay village and complain about the noise.

Strangely, when the smoking ban was enacted, he stopped lobbying for this since, well, people HAVE to exit the club and hang out outside now to smoke.
