This thread touched on many of the key issues in the psytrance scene, I've heard this conversation play out several times over. It seems to boil down to taste and preference. Each promoter and deco artists has a predetermined idea on how to reach "enlightenment" or whatever experience they wish to impart through their work and it sometimes clashes with the other crew members and what party-goers' idea of a rave experience is (to them).

Psychedelics have a long romantic history with spiritualism, untangling the love affair seems futile and unnecessary.

I was often flustered by the pseudo-spirituality pandemic in the psy-scene, but one fine day I realized I was judging and that we all find out way through life one way or another. In the end, you gotta take some and you leave some.

I've always seen the death and skull imagery of things like hardcore, metal, goths, etc. as a reminder that when it comes down to it, we're just going to be bones at the end of it all, and the constant use of death is a reminder to enjoy your life and not waste it on bullshit like spirituality. Live in the here and now, not in the 'well maybe if I do this and that then this and that will happen to me when I die' self-delusion of a fantasy world.

spirituality is mostly built around how humans relate to death.
lots of religion's messages is simply this - live your life to the fullest.
we have bad opinions or religions because it's really corrupted in the establishments, like the government ;)
most people think great god will come from the sky
take away everything and make everybody feel high
but if you know what life is worth
you would look for yours on earth

in truth we all say the same thing. we just misunderstand each other.

j'pense pas que jesus pronais ca. Mais plutot ceux qui, par la suite, ont voulu profiter de son influence pour le controle. Comme la plupart des religions qui se font corromprent.

cant help it, i love metaphysical discussions...

the answer to your question is no.

christianity is exactly like judaism and islam on this topic, as all three religions have a common base. In fact, most religions see our current lives as mere passages before moving on to the real deal, so we're encouraged to do good in this life in order to reap greater benefits in the nest one.

But really, do we need this promised prize to lead a decent existance? But not contributing to more pain we are just making our own lives better. And instead of preparing for some future other-life, shouldnt we prepare for the lives of future generations?

this is some core beliefs of native spirituality...

and since the topic is on psy-trance party deco, i'll add that you don't see christian, judaist or islamic imagery in those parties much.....

I like the spirit of what you wrote here, but is it really true? I don't think so. You can't really say "we" because there are billions of people, and you don't what kind of thoughts are running through their minds. I don't either. It's unknowable. I'm just saying, because of that unknown variable, you can't assume all belief systems are fundamentally alike.

Some religions seem to have traditionally encouraged aggressive proselytizing.. ie: forced conversions, and putting non-believers to the sword. This is very true of the Abrahamic religions, but is not the case with Buddhism.

I just don't believe that a radical Muslim ,Jewish or Christian preacher is saying the same thing as Siddhartha Gautama, but is simply misunderstood.

but it just seems like dabbling in an "exotic" culture because it's trendy. "I'm a devotee of Shiva the Destroyer. but mostly just on weekends.. at raves and outdoor festivals." I dunno - seems like some people latch onto these icons because they look cool..

here's one. I don't even know who it is. I just googled: obscure Hindu god. it looks pretty badass though. and that's my point.

a lot of posers just buy into an image. adopt this colourful persona and claim to be deeply spiritual, but still remain very vain and egocentric.

and for the record, Yoshin - that's not directed at you at all. In fact out of anyone I've met in MTL, you always seem genuinely postive, friendly and accepting of others. very down to earth and free of ego. Those were just my observations of certain other people I've met.

lol that obscure hindu god you googled is actually shiva, in the nataraj form, lord of the dance. the ring around him is the cosmic fire that burns all thoughts and allows us to be in the present moment. and he is dancing on a corpse that represents illusions that we destroy. :)

about we all say the same thing, hmmmm ok i meant the rave culture is pretty much a hedonist place. live life to the fullest, do what you like, we'll sleep when we die, etc... and it's not because some people like to meditate or look at fluo things that they live their lives less to the fullest than those who enjoy looking at skulls... it's like... same thing, slightly different approach.

and for the weekend worshipper thing... well you get that with every culture out there, you'll have those wearing skulls just because it's cool, and you'll have those wearing them because they really feel connected to what it means to wear one. same with che guevara t-shirts ;) there will always be people who are more shallow than others, and there is not much we can do about it, just accept that this is where they are in their life... in truth they're not fooling anyone but themselves...

and those that are truely not materialistic won't care what that person is wearing anyways if it means nothing to them. they will connect on other levels. for my part i don't need to wear a shiva t-shirt because shiva is within. om namah shivaya. but seeing a shiva backdrop at a party made me curious to research who he was, what he stood for. he is a guide that i can invoke, he lives within each of us.

Che t-shirts are pretty much the perfect analogy. Anyone who wears one has no fucking clue how much of a blood-thirsty capitalist dictator he was lol, they wear it because they think he stood for some ideals that he really didn't.
