IMHO good dj's can rock a crowd, great dj's can control a crowd to it's last step. Hard work and perseverance pay off eventually. It's not just about beatmatching, it isn't just about selectah, it's about the mastery of both, added with the creativity of efx and cuts etc...

Some people are dj's because they love the music, some people are dj's because they love the attention, but in the end, a true leader and pioneer walks alone, following the rhythm of his heart and the voice of his soul. Fakeness can take you far, but the journey is hollow and it's merits are empty.

Trade bookings can do wonders for the scene in cross promotion between crews, and even in some cases, talent discovery therein, but they should never be the backbone of a dj's intentions, music should.

whether you are a promoter or a dj, the only that can eventually give you the success you crave is HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE, but in the words of Levar Burton, "you don't have to take my word for it"

Ufot-when the going gets tough, it's time to get tougher

EVERY music scene has people that are in it because they love it, and EVERY music scene has it's share of people who are in it for the sake of showing everyone else just how much more awesome and more of a "real fan" they are.

Well I'v been recording classical concerts as well as mixing classical radio shows for quite a few years now and have yet to have a "techtalk" with anyone with a classical music background that wasnt a tech/engeniere/producer himself. Most of the fans that make it to concerts are 50years and more and are way beyond there "dick waving" years. The young peoples in the audiance are usually classical musiciens that spend more than 3 hours a day practicing there instrument so that one day they can "dick wave" in concert for there peers.

Peoples dont get into classical music for the "dick waving".
Gotta be carefull with the blanket statements...

I'm a classical musician and I don't dick wave much about it.
In fact, most if not all the classical musicians I know are in for the music and nothing else.

They all moved to remote locations where they can practise like crazy all day long.

Many of them are dicks but not 'dick-wavers', because they only talk about that new composer they discovered or that new composition they just made.
They simply get annoying.

They don't have a good equilibrium between music and real life.

But I guess that's what makes the best musicians !!!
I'm feeling cerveau bruler right now..

IMO that's something that every single DJ and Promoter should give a read, despite it being like 15 pages long.

Went through! Nice stuff. Don't you think it is BECAUSE music is easier to get, easier to mix, that there is so many djs? I mean, every student has a laptop and listens to music. The difference with the vinyls, is that you can practically be dj for free.

And don't say "you couldnt care less about the dj", you are opening wide the door to the prepared playlist played on a ipod.

And why going out if you are in for the sound? As a full grown adult with your priorities straighted, you should have a good sound system right or better, flat monitors/phones? You are still in for some kind of "Performance", something to remember the night, as in music is being played? Actually see something that only can be seen and eared, here and now, through gear used on a stage, hardware, effect machines, etc.
I'm feeling like tweaking that drum kit right now..

I don't know much about the classical music world. However, it's probably safe to say that to make a great career as an artist in classical music, you need to be very good at your art, that's for sure, but above that you also need a great network of contacts to get in the right places, just like in electronic music (or any kind of music). Am I wrong here?

Classical music is very institutionalized. The network is all laid out. After studying in the best schools of music with the best teachers, you will have to go through all sorts of international competitions, win grants to study with even more renown teachers. Your reputation as a highly proficient musician is what matters in classical music. The screening process is nothing like pop music.

a solid network of contacts makes a HUGE difference, but simply relying on your network and not skill building and trade sharpening in the meantime just guarantees you a spot as another known bland act. You are right though Omni, it's mostly about who you know...

Ufot-it doesnt hurt to keep the hard work
